Verdict: The AKG N5 Hybrid is an unusually flexible true-wireless set because it combines ordinary Bluetooth with a bundled 2.4 GHz USB-C dongle. That makes it a plausible single headset for a phone, laptop meetings and music, while adaptive noise cancelling, six microphones, LDAC and spatial audio broaden its feature list. The compromises are significant at the price: AKG publishes much shorter runtime over the dongle, its own ANC-on figures do not agree between documents, and a September 2026 TechRadar roundup says its review found disappointing battery life and design issues. This is a feature-rich option for someone who will genuinely use both connection modes, not an automatic value pick for casual Bluetooth listening.

What the AKG N5 Hybrid is

The N5 Hybrid is a pair of true-wireless, noise-cancelling earbuds built around two wireless paths. You can pair them over standard Bluetooth with a phone, tablet or computer, or use the included 2.4 GHz USB-C dongle for a dedicated link to a computer or another compatible host. The package also includes a USB-A-to-C component, so a computer with a conventional USB-A port can use the dongle without a separate adapter.

That dual-connection design is the product’s defining idea. Bluetooth is convenient and broadly compatible; a USB dongle can be more practical for a desktop that you use for meetings, especially when you want the earbuds to behave like a dedicated wireless audio device rather than a conventional Bluetooth peripheral. AKG also advertises multipoint switching between a phone call and a desktop Zoom meeting. In AKG’s wording, “The multi-point connection lets you easily switch between a call on your phone and a Zoom meeting on your desktop.” That is a manufacturer description, not an independently verified result.

AKG says the earbuds connect over Bluetooth with Apple, Android and Windows devices. The dongle is USB-C, and the box’s USB-A-to-C part matters if the computer you intend to use does not expose a spare USB-C port. Check the host’s physical port and any workplace restrictions on USB accessories before buying.

AKG N5 Hybrid specifications at a glance

Feature What is documented What it means for a buyer
Wireless links Bluetooth plus bundled 2.4 GHz USB-C dongle One set can cover mobile Bluetooth listening and computer use through the dongle.
Bluetooth version Bluetooth 5.3 A current Bluetooth generation; the version alone does not establish range, latency or sound quality.
Codecs and formats LDAC and Hi-Res Audio Wireless listed by AKG Potentially higher-resolution Bluetooth playback with a compatible source and settings; the phone, app and connection conditions still determine what is actually used.
Spatial audio Listed by AKG A software feature whose effect depends on supported content and implementation. No independent performance measurement is established here.
Noise control Adaptive ANC listed by AKG The earbuds can adjust noise reduction according to their surroundings, but the available material does not establish cancellation strength in particular environments.
Microphones Six microphones More microphone hardware can support ANC and voice pickup; it is not a guarantee of call quality.
Meeting certification Zoom certification listed by AKG A useful compatibility signal for Zoom users, not a substitute for an independent microphone test.
Water and dust ratings Earbuds IP54; case IP52 The earbuds have limited protection from dust and water splashes. The case has a lower IP52 rating and should be kept drier.
Official US price snapshot $329.95 on AKG’s US store page, accessed October 13, 2026; listing marked sold out This is a US snapshot, not a universal current price or proof of stock in another region.

All feature descriptions in this table are based on AKG’s product page or specification sheet unless otherwise noted. They should be read as stated capabilities, not as independent test findings.

How the Bluetooth and dongle modes differ

Bluetooth for phones and everyday listening

Bluetooth is the straightforward mode for a phone, tablet or laptop. AKG lists Bluetooth 5.3, LDAC and Hi-Res Audio Wireless, so an Android phone or other source that supports LDAC may offer a higher-bitrate option than the default Bluetooth codec. Compatibility is not automatic: the source must support LDAC, the feature may need to be enabled in its Bluetooth or audio settings, and a higher-bitrate mode can be more sensitive to radio conditions. Apple devices do not provide LDAC, so the presence of the codec does not give every phone the same result.

Spatial audio is also listed by AKG. Treat it as an optional processing mode rather than a promise that every song, video or game will sound more immersive. The supplied information does not identify a particular spatial-audio standard, head-tracking behavior or supported application list.

2.4 GHz USB-C dongle for a computer

The dongle is the reason the N5 Hybrid is different from most Bluetooth-only earbuds. Plug it into a USB-C port, or into a USB-A port through the supplied USB-A-to-C component, and select the resulting audio device in the computer’s sound and meeting settings. A dedicated 2.4 GHz link can be attractive when a laptop or desktop has unreliable Bluetooth, when a company computer limits Bluetooth profiles, or when you want one repeatable meeting setup.

Do not assume every USB-C socket will work. A port must support the dongle as a USB device; a charge-only port will not. Corporate computers may also block unapproved USB audio devices. If the dongle is not detected, try the computer’s other port, remove hubs temporarily, reconnect the earbuds, and check the operating system’s input and output selection.

Multipoint and the Smart Talk limitation

AKG presents multipoint as a way to move between a phone call and a desktop meeting. That is useful for people who keep a personal phone nearby while working at a computer, but the exact behavior depends on the two connected devices and their operating systems. The specification sheet states that Smart Talk is unavailable when the earbuds use the 2.4 GHz dongle. If Smart Talk is important to you, plan to use Bluetooth rather than assuming every feature follows you into dongle mode.

Battery life: read the connection-specific figures

Battery estimates vary sharply by connection and noise-control setting. AKG’s specification sheet says Bluetooth playback can reach up to 40 hours in total with ANC off: up to 10 hours from the earbuds and 30 additional hours from the case. The same sheet gives a much lower dongle estimate with ANC off: up to 4.5 hours from the earbuds and 13.5 hours from the case.

Mode Earbuds Case contribution Total stated runtime
Bluetooth, ANC off Up to 10 hours Up to 30 hours Up to 40 hours
2.4 GHz dongle, ANC off Up to 4.5 hours Up to 13.5 hours Up to 18 hours
Bluetooth, ANC on Up to 6 hours on AKG’s US product page Not stated in that page figure Not stated
Bluetooth, ANC on Up to 8 hours in AKG’s specification sheet Not stated in that sheet figure Not stated

The two AKG sources disagree on Bluetooth runtime with ANC enabled: the US page says up to 6 hours per charge, while the specification sheet says up to 8 hours. Without a current manual or support clarification, neither number should be presented as the definitive ANC-on result. The sources do agree on the important practical point: dongle use has a considerably lower stated runtime than Bluetooth, even with ANC off.

“Up to” figures are laboratory-style maximums rather than a promise for every listening session. Volume, codec, radio conditions, microphone use, ANC behavior and temperature can all change endurance. For a workday dominated by the dongle, the 4.5-hour earbud estimate is the number to plan around, not the 40-hour Bluetooth headline. A case recharge during a break may be part of normal use.

Noise cancelling, calls and meetings

Adaptive ANC

Adaptive ANC is one of the N5 Hybrid’s headline features. In principle, an adaptive system changes its processing as surrounding sound changes, which is useful when you move between a quiet office, transport and a busier street. The available evidence does not include an independent measurement of attenuation, a comparison against other earbuds, or a test of wind handling. Therefore, the presence of adaptive ANC is established; its real-world strength and transparency-mode quality are not.

Six microphones and Zoom certification

AKG lists six microphones and Zoom certification. Those specifications are relevant if calls and meetings are a central reason to buy, but microphone count is not a direct measure of how clearly a colleague will hear you. Room reflections, keyboard noise, wind and the computer’s selected input device still matter. Zoom certification indicates that AKG has identified the product as compatible with Zoom’s requirements; it does not provide a published speech-intelligibility score.

When using the dongle on a computer, confirm both sides of the meeting setup: choose the N5 Hybrid as the speaker output and as the microphone input in the operating system and in the meeting application. If only one side is selected, you may hear the meeting through the earbuds while the computer continues using its built-in microphone, or vice versa.

Sound features and what independent evidence actually says

LDAC, Hi-Res Audio Wireless and spatial audio give the N5 Hybrid a broad feature set for music. They describe supported technologies, not a guaranteed sonic signature. A compatible phone may have to be configured for LDAC, and spatial processing can be a matter of taste. Listeners who prefer an unprocessed presentation should be prepared to disable optional effects and compare.

The only independent review evidence supplied here is a summary in TechRadar’s roundup published September 24, 2026. It says TechRadar’s AKG N5 review awarded four out of five stars and praised the audio and the overall feature set. The roundup also reported disappointing battery life and design issues at the price. The original review, its test conditions, reviewer identity and detailed measurements were not available in the material used for this article, so those comments cannot be expanded into claims about frequency response, ANC levels, fit or call quality.

Fit, durability and design considerations

The earbuds carry an IP54 rating, while the case is rated IP52. IP54 means the earbuds have limited dust ingress protection and protection against water splashes from multiple directions; it is not a swimming or shower rating. IP52 gives the case limited dust protection and protection from vertically dripping water when tilted within the rating’s test conditions. Keep the case out of rain and away from sinks even if the earbuds themselves encounter a light splash.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TechRadar’s roundup specifically mentions design issues but does not identify them in the available summary. That limitation matters: it would be misleading to invent a complaint about shape, controls, case size or comfort. Prospective buyers should treat fit as an open question and use a retailer’s return policy where possible, particularly because comfort and seal quality affect both ANC and bass response.

Using the N5 Hybrid with a computer: a practical setup

  1. Charge the earbuds and case. Start with enough charge for pairing and a meeting. Dongle mode has the lower stated runtime, so do not begin a long workday at the minimum.
  2. Choose the correct physical connection. Insert the USB-C dongle directly into a compatible USB-C port. If the computer has USB-A, attach the supplied USB-A-to-C component and plug that assembly into the computer.
  3. Wait for device detection. Open the operating system’s sound settings and look for the dongle or N5 Hybrid as an output and input device. If it is absent, try another port and bypass a hub.
  4. Select it in the meeting app. In Zoom or another meeting program, set both speaker and microphone to the N5 Hybrid or its dongle entry. Run the app’s own speaker and microphone test before an important call.
  5. Pair the phone separately if needed. Use Bluetooth for the phone and follow the phone’s normal pairing screen. Multipoint behavior is described by AKG for switching between a phone call and desktop meeting, but the exact prompts and priorities can vary by device.
  6. Check feature trade-offs. Smart Talk is unavailable over the 2.4 GHz connection, according to AKG’s specification sheet. If that feature is essential, use Bluetooth for the relevant scenario.

Common problems and fixes

The dongle is not recognised

  • Confirm that the port supports USB data rather than charging only.
  • Remove a USB hub or dock and test a direct connection.
  • Try the included USB-A-to-C component on a USB-A port, or another USB-C port.
  • Check whether workplace device-management policy blocks USB audio accessories.
  • Reconnect the earbuds and restart the audio application after the operating system detects the dongle.

Battery life is much shorter than the headline

  • Identify whether you are using the dongle; AKG’s maximum falls from 40 total Bluetooth hours with ANC off to 18 total dongle hours with ANC off.
  • Account for ANC, microphone use, volume and radio conditions.
  • Use the case between meetings rather than planning around the Bluetooth maximum.
  • Remember that AKG publishes conflicting Bluetooth ANC-on estimates of 6 and 8 hours, so neither should be treated as a guaranteed figure.

Calls use the wrong microphone

  • Set the N5 Hybrid as the input device in both system settings and the meeting application.
  • Check that the dongle, not the laptop’s built-in microphone, is selected when you intend to use the earbuds’ microphones.
  • Run the meeting app’s test and confirm that the input meter responds to your voice.

Price and value

AKG’s US store page listed the N5 Hybrid at $329.95 when accessed October 13, 2026, and marked it sold out. That is a dated US listing snapshot, not a current worldwide street price. Availability, taxes, currency and retailer pricing can differ by country, so verify the local price and stock before making a purchase decision.

At that level, the dongle is the central value question. If you need one set that can move between Bluetooth devices and a desktop without buying a separate wireless headset, the connectivity flexibility may justify paying more than a conventional Bluetooth pair. If you will use only a phone over Bluetooth, much of what you are paying for is unused, while the dongle’s lower battery estimate remains a disadvantage. TechRadar’s four-star roundup summary supports the idea of a strong feature set and good audio, but its reported battery and design reservations make the price harder to justify for buyers who do not need the extra connection.

Who should buy the AKG N5 Hybrid?

A good fit for

  • People who regularly alternate between a phone and a computer and want one pair of earbuds for both.
  • Zoom users who value a manufacturer-listed certification and a dedicated USB-C connection.
  • Listeners with a compatible source who specifically want LDAC or the option of spatial audio.
  • Buyers who accept charging during a workday when using the 2.4 GHz dongle.

Consider another approach if

  • Your priority is maximum battery endurance in wireless computer mode.
  • You need a definitive ANC, fit or microphone ranking based on independent measurements.
  • You will use the earbuds only with an Apple device and cannot use LDAC.
  • You expect the case to tolerate wet conditions; its IP52 rating is modest.
  • You are uncomfortable buying at a premium price while the official US listing is sold out and the ANC-on battery figures remain inconsistent.

Pros and cons

Pros Cons or limits
Bluetooth and a bundled 2.4 GHz USB-C dongle in one package Dongle runtime is stated at only up to 4.5 hours from the earbuds with ANC off
USB-A-to-C component broadens computer-port compatibility Smart Talk is unavailable over the dongle
AKG lists Bluetooth 5.3, LDAC, Hi-Res Audio Wireless and spatial audio Those are manufacturer-listed capabilities, not independent performance results
Adaptive ANC, six microphones and Zoom certification are aimed at calls and meetings Available evidence does not establish ANC strength or microphone quality
Earbuds are IP54 rated Case is only IP52 rated; neither rating is for swimming
TechRadar roundup summary reports good audio and a solid feature set The same summary reports disappointing battery life and design issues at the price

Bottom-line buying advice

The AKG N5 Hybrid makes the most sense when its 2.4 GHz dongle will be used often. It offers a rare combination of mobile Bluetooth convenience and a packaged desktop connection, plus a substantial list of audio, ANC and meeting features. The decision is less compelling for a phone-only listener, because the dongle’s lower endurance, unresolved ANC-on battery discrepancy and reported design concerns leave less margin at a $329.95 US list price.

Before ordering, verify three things: the price and stock in your region, the computer port you will use, and whether a 4.5-hour maximum earbud estimate in dongle mode fits your workday. If those conditions are acceptable, the N5 Hybrid is a credible all-in-one work-and-music concept. If not, its headline feature count does not by itself overcome the practical compromises.
