AI’s effect on green jobs is not yet quantified well enough to say which roles it will create or eliminate. What the available evidence does show is a substantial renewable-energy workforce, alongside slower employment growth in 2024 despite record capacity additions. If you’re exploring a sustainable career, start with the work you want to do, the skills employers in your area require, and training that includes practical experience and safety.
What counts as a green job?
“Green job” can describe work in two different ways. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) distinguishes between jobs at establishments that produce environmental goods and services, and jobs that make an establishment’s production processes more environmentally beneficial or resource-efficient. These are different measurement approaches and can overlap; a job can be green because of what an employer produces, how it operates, or both.

This broad category is not the same as renewable-energy employment. Renewable-energy jobs are one part of the wider green-jobs landscape, which can also include work connected to green buildings, resource efficiency, and other environmental goods and services. The BLS overview is useful for understanding the definitions, but its page was last modified in 2013 and should not be treated as current career-projection data. BLS: Green Jobs Overview

The latest global estimate in the cited annual review is at least 16.6 million people directly or indirectly employed in renewable energy worldwide in 2024. IRENA and the International Labour Organization (ILO) reported that employment grew 2.3% from 2023—the slowest rate in the series—even as renewable capacity additions reached a record. The review points to economies of scale, automation and other technological innovation, excess equipment-manufacturing capacity, and grid bottlenecks that contributed to generation curtailment. This is a global estimate for renewable energy in 2024, not a live 2026 job count, a count of all green jobs, or a forecast of local vacancies. For historical context, IRENA’s 2024 annual-review summary counted 16.2 million renewable-energy jobs worldwide in 2023, up from 13.7 million in 2022. It reported 7.1 million solar photovoltaic jobs in 2023, equal to 44% of that year’s global renewable-energy workforce. These are 2023 figures, not the latest estimate. IRENA: Energy and Jobs
In the United States, the Department of Energy’s summary of the 2024 U.S. Energy and Employment Report says clean-energy employment grew 4.2% in 2023, compared with 2.0% growth in the overall U.S. economy. It also reports 2023 job growth of 5.3% in solar and 4.5% in wind, and says clean-energy jobs grew in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The report’s figures are U.S.-specific and based on a customized survey of energy employers that augments BLS data; they do not show current openings or establish what is growing in a particular occupation or locality. Capacity growth does not translate one-for-one into job growth. Employment can vary with technology, geography, where supply chains are located, productivity, and policy. Treat sector-wide figures as context; check local employers, project activity, and regional labor information before choosing a training path.
What kinds of green work could you pursue?
Renewable energy includes roles at different skill levels and across the life of a project. The IRENA–ILO 2024 annual review names mid-skill roles such as solar panel installers, wind turbine technicians, electricians, plumbers, welders, and hydropower operators. Depending on the technology and employer, work can also involve construction, manufacturing, planning, research, operations, or maintenance. - Installation and construction: build or connect equipment and systems; consider site conditions, physical demands, travel, and safety requirements.
- Operations and maintenance: keep facilities and equipment operating, diagnose issues, and perform repairs; technical trade skills may transfer.
- Manufacturing: make or assemble equipment and components; openings depend partly on where production facilities and supply chains are located.
- Planning and research: contribute to system design, analysis, or technical development; some advanced roles may call for STEM study or specialized experience.
These examples are not a ranking of the most in-demand jobs in every country. An occupation’s prospects depend on local employers, projects, and requirements.
How do you prepare for a renewable-energy job?
There is no single certificate required for every green job. Entry requirements differ by occupation, employer, project, and jurisdiction. Existing trade experience, technical and vocational education, an apprenticeship, on-the-job learning, reskilling, or a degree can each be relevant, depending on the work.
- Choose a type of work to investigate. Compare installation, operations, maintenance, construction, manufacturing, planning, and research by daily duties and working conditions—not only by the technology involved.
- Check real local requirements. Review job listings from employers in your area for prerequisites, credentials, hands-on experience, safety training, and travel expectations. Confirm that any credential is recognized by relevant local employers.
- Select a route that closes a specific skills gap. Consider trade skills you can transfer, vocational study, an apprenticeship, employer training, or a degree for more advanced technical work. Compare practical training, safety content, accessibility, and total cost.
- Verify demand before committing. Look at local employers and project pipelines, then consult regional labor information. A global sector estimate does not guarantee an opening nearby.
The IRENA–ILO review describes different workforce-development approaches rather than one universal program. In Brazil, a labor union worked with local universities and technical schools on solar training spanning installation, system design, and maintenance, with occupational health and safety included. In Zambia, an ILO- and Sida-supported pilot worked with private-sector partners on demand-driven training and targeted women’s participation. These are examples, not programs necessarily available to every reader.
For further exploration, the ILO’s green-skills resource directory covers topics including renewable energy, green buildings, critical energy-transition minerals, green hydrogen, skills needs, and greening technical and vocational education. The U.S. Department of Energy’s workforce page indexes studies on solar installation, wind, hydropower, and offshore wind. Use them to identify areas to investigate, then check local employer requirements and credential recognition. ILO: Skills for green jobs · DOE: Planning for the Future Energy Workforce

The available evidence does not establish a distinct, quantified AI effect on green jobs. The latest IRENA–ILO review identifies automation and other technological innovation among factors moderating renewable-energy employment growth, but it does not isolate AI, estimate AI-related job creation or displacement, or name green occupations that AI will eliminate or create. Automation should not be treated as a proxy for a measured AI jobs forecast.
For someone choosing a career, the practical implication is to focus on durable occupational requirements rather than an unsupported prediction about AI: technical competence, relevant hands-on preparation, and safety where the work requires it. Revisit local employer requirements as technology and projects change.
