Yes. Airtel has a live 5G service in India called Airtel 5G Plus. Whether you can use it depends on your exact location, a compatible 5G phone, network settings and an eligible plan or offer. Your existing Airtel 4G SIM will generally work; replacing it is not normally required.
What is Airtel 5G Plus?
Airtel 5G Plus is Airtel’s consumer 5G service in India. Airtel describes it as live in multiple Indian cities, but a city appearing on a rollout list does not mean every street, building or room has a usable 5G signal. Mobile coverage changes block by block because of tower placement, terrain, building materials, network load and the phone’s position.

Airtel’s older city-directory material includes a forecast dated December 2023. Treat that forecast as historical rollout information rather than proof of current availability. For a present-day check, use the interactive coverage map and the Airtel Thanks app instead of relying on a general city label.

The practical answer is therefore two-part: Airtel does operate 5G, but “Airtel has 5G in my city” is not the same as “my address will receive 5G indoors.”

Is Airtel 5G available in my area?
The most useful first check is Airtel’s coverage map. Search your address or PIN code, select the 5G layer and inspect the predicted area around the location. Airtel states that the map represents expected outdoor coverage and “doesn’t reflect indoor availability.” It also describes the map as approximate, subject to change and not guaranteed.
Use the map as a planning tool, not as a promise. A home beside a mapped zone may still see 4G indoors if walls block the signal, while a phone near a window or outdoors may connect to 5G. Coverage can also vary between floors, streets and nearby buildings.
The Airtel Thanks app provides a second check. It can show whether your handset is 5G-ready and whether your city is listed as ready. You still need to test the exact place where you intend to use the service because an app result cannot measure signal quality in every room.

- Open the Airtel coverage map. Search the address or PIN code where you want to use 5G.
- Switch to the 5G view. Read the shaded area as predicted outdoor coverage, not an indoor guarantee.
- Check the Airtel Thanks app. Look for the handset-readiness and city-readiness checks.
- Test at the actual location. Stand in the room or outdoor spot where you need service and observe whether the phone changes to 5G.
- Repeat at another time if necessary. A temporary connection issue, network maintenance or congestion can make a single test misleading.
If the map suggests coverage but your phone remains on 4G, verify the handset, software and preferred network mode before assuming that the map is wrong.

Will my Airtel 4G SIM work on 5G?
Usually, yes. Airtel says, “All Our existing Airtel 4G SIMs are already 5G enabled.” In practical terms, an existing working Airtel 4G SIM generally does not need to be exchanged for a special 5G SIM.
The SIM statement does not remove the other requirements. You still need a compatible 5G handset, current device software, 5G enabled in the network settings, local Airtel 5G coverage and an offer or plan that permits the data you want to use. A SIM replacement is therefore not the default fix for a phone that will not connect.
Consider a replacement only if the SIM itself is damaged, cannot register on Airtel’s network or customer support specifically identifies it as defective. For an ordinary 4G-to-5G upgrade, check the phone and settings first.
Do I need a 5G phone for Airtel?
Yes. A 4G-only handset cannot connect to Airtel 5G, even when the SIM and location are eligible. The phone must support Airtel’s 5G service and have software that exposes the required network options.

Before buying a handset, confirm its exact model and regional variant with the manufacturer or Airtel’s compatibility check. Two phones sold under a similar name can have different radio support in different markets. If your current phone already appears as 5G-ready in the Thanks app, buying another phone is unnecessary.
A software update may be required before the 5G option appears. Install the manufacturer’s pending system update, restart the phone and check the network menu again. Airtel’s general instructions do not provide one universal path for every model, so labels can differ between Android phones and iPhones.
How do I turn on Airtel 5G?
- Install updates. Open your phone’s system-update screen and apply any available carrier or operating-system update.
- Open mobile-network settings. On many Android phones this is under Settings > Connections or Settings > Mobile network. The exact wording varies by manufacturer.
- Choose the preferred network type. Select an option that includes 5G, such as 5G/4G/3G/2G or 5G Auto. Do not choose a 4G-only mode.
- Enable mobile data on the Airtel SIM. If the phone has two SIMs, confirm that Airtel is the SIM selected for mobile data and that its 5G setting is active.
- Restart and test. Toggle airplane mode or restart the phone, then test outdoors or near a window in a mapped coverage area.
Menu names and available choices depend on the handset, software version and region. If no 5G option appears after an update, use the Thanks app’s compatibility result or contact Airtel rather than forcing an unsupported setting.

“Unlimited 5G” is an offer with conditions, not a permanent entitlement attached to every Airtel number. Airtel’s offer page says customers must claim the benefit through the Thanks app with a compatible phone. Eligibility can depend on the account, recharge, handset and current offer rules.

Before recharging, open the offer in your own Thanks app and read the displayed validity, activation steps, fair-use language and expiry. A pack labelled “unlimited 5G” in a public recharge listing may not be available to every customer or in every market.

The ₹349 and ₹1,099 figures were displayed on Airtel’s prepaid recharge page when checked in 2026. Recharge pages are dynamic and can vary by account or market, so do not treat those amounts as evergreen tariffs. Confirm the current price and benefits at checkout.

Airtel promotes a claim of “up to 30x faster downloads compared to existing technologies.” Airtel CTO Randeep Singh Sekhon is attributed with that statement on Airtel’s service page. “Up to” describes a best-case promotional ceiling, not a speed that every customer should expect.
Your actual result depends on signal strength, spectrum, the phone’s modem, network traffic, server location, indoor obstruction and the test method. The available material does not establish one independent, current speed figure that applies to every Airtel 5G location. A 5G icon alone also does not guarantee a particular download rate.

For a meaningful personal test, use the same phone and app in the same place, run several tests at different times and note whether the phone is indoors or outdoors. Compare results only after checking that both services have comparable plans and data allowances.
Why is my Airtel phone still showing 4G?
Work through these checks in order:

Do not begin by buying a new SIM. Airtel’s own guidance says existing 4G SIMs are 5G-enabled, so handset support, settings, software, location and account eligibility are more likely starting points.
What should you check before buying a 5G phone for Airtel?
- Exact model compatibility: confirm the model and regional variant, not just the product family name.
- Software support: check whether the manufacturer has released the necessary update.
- Local coverage: search the address on Airtel’s map and remember that the result is an outdoor estimate.
- Plan eligibility: verify that the recharge you intend to use qualifies for any unlimited-5G offer.
- Real need: if your current phone is already 5G-ready, replacing it will not create coverage where Airtel has none.
When comparing two networks or phones, use the same address, device class, test time and measurement method. Compare indoor and outdoor performance separately, then check price, validity, daily data, calls and the precise unlimited-5G conditions. There is no controlled independent evidence here to declare one operator universally fastest.

Airtel 5G Plus is a live Airtel service in India. You can use it with a compatible 5G phone, an existing Airtel 4G SIM in most cases, suitable software and settings, local coverage and an eligible plan or claimed offer. Check the address-level map and Thanks app before spending money, and treat all prices, coverage predictions and unlimited-data labels as changeable details that must be verified for your account.
