Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAirPods that sound too quiet usually have a setting, fit, obstruction, source-device, or hardware problem—not one universal fault. First test another app and device, then check the active volume, Reduce Loud Audio, left-right balance, automatic features such as Conversation Awareness, and the speaker mesh. Clean and reset the AirPods only after those checks, and avoid raising volume to unsafe levels.
Start with a 60-second diagnosis
- Play a consistently mastered track in a second app. A quiet podcast, video, or call may be the source of the apparent problem.
- Check whether both AirPods are quiet, only one is quiet, or the change happens only during calls or conversations.
- Confirm the AirPods are the selected output on the active device.
- Test each AirPod alone, leaving the other in its case.
- Pair the AirPods with another device if possible.
If both earbuds are quiet everywhere, prioritize volume limits, accessibility settings, fit, firmware, and hardware. If only one is quiet, inspect the mesh, balance, charging contact, and that individual earbud first. If only one app or device is affected, troubleshoot its audio settings before resetting the AirPods.
Raise the correct volume control
iPhone and iPad
Connect the AirPods, start playback, open Control Center, and raise the media-volume slider. The volume buttons adjust the active audio output, but confirm that the AirPods—not the phone speaker or another Bluetooth device—are selected.
AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3 can use stem swipes for volume when touch-control volume adjustment is enabled. See Apple’s current guide for model and software availability: AirPods volume controls.

Mac
Open Control Center or the menu-bar sound control, select the connected AirPods, and raise the output level. Then open System Settings > Sound > Output and verify the AirPods are the selected device. If the Mac is using the AirPods microphone at the same time, test playback after selecting a different microphone; macOS can change audio behavior when a Bluetooth headset profile is active.
Apple Watch and Apple TV
Adjust volume from the watch or Apple TV’s own playback controls. The iPhone’s slider may not control the output currently in use.
Tone Volume is different from media volume. It changes connection, control, and low-battery sounds, not music, video, or podcasts. Apple documents it here: AirPods sound-effect volume.
Check for a volume limit
On a current iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Headphone Safety. Review Reduce Loud Audio and any configured maximum headphone level. A limit can make AirPods seem unable to reach their previous maximum.

This is not a recommendation to listen louder: Apple warns that prolonged high-volume exposure can permanently damage hearing. Background noise and continued exposure can also make sound seem quieter than it is. Read Apple’s safety guidance at AirPods safety and hearing.

Center balance and review accessibility audio
Left-right balance
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual and place Balance in the center. A shifted slider can make one AirPod appear defective or make stereo playback seem unusually quiet. Apple specifically recommends this check for unequal AirPod volume: one AirPod is quieter.
Mono Audio and Headphone Accommodations
In the same menu, check whether Mono Audio is producing an unexpected stereo image. Open Headphone Accommodations and temporarily turn the feature off, or compare its custom tuning with the default profile. Audiograms and custom amplification can change tone, balance, and perceived loudness. Apple’s configuration instructions are at customize headphone audio levels.
Turn off automatic volume changes
Conversation Awareness
Conversation Awareness lowers media volume when supported AirPods detect that you are speaking. Open Control Center, touch and hold the volume control, and turn the feature off temporarily. You can also check the AirPods settings page. It is the likely explanation when music becomes quiet while talking, singing, or responding to someone. Apple describes the behavior at listening-mode settings.
Personalized Volume
On supported models, open Settings, tap the AirPods name near the top, and turn off Personalized Volume for a comparison. It automatically adjusts media volume using environmental conditions and learned listening preferences. See Apple’s feature notes at Personalized Volume and Adaptive Audio.
Listening modes and Loud Sound Reduction
Test Noise Cancellation, Transparency, and Off separately. Transparency or Adaptive mode may use Loud Sound Reduction on supported models, software versions, and regions. That can change perceived loudness without raising or lowering the AirPods’ actual maximum output. Apple lists availability and controls at Transparency and Loud Sound Reduction.

Adaptive Audio seamlessly blends ANC and Transparency mode — which lets you comfortably hear and interact with the world around you exactly as it sounds — to provide the best listening experience in any environment.* And when you’re speaking with someone nearby, Conversation Awareness automatically lowers the volume of what’s playing.*
- IMPROVED SOUND AND CALL QUALITY — Voice Isolation improves the quality of calls in loud conditions. Using advanced computational audio, it reduces background noise while isolating and clarifying the sound of your voice for whomever you’re speaking to.*

Move to a quiet room and retest. With AirPods Pro, run the Ear Tip Fit Test and try another tip size. A poor seal reduces bass and lets outside noise mask the music; ANC may improve intelligibility by reducing that noise, but it is not a guaranteed volume boost.
Inspect and clean the AirPods safely
Debris or earwax covering the speaker mesh is especially likely when one AirPod became quieter gradually. Inspect the speaker and microphone mesh, AirPods Pro ear-tip screens, ear tips, and charging contacts. Remove the tips on models that use them and follow Apple’s model-specific cleaning instructions through the AirPods Support hub.
Recommended Free Tools
- Do not push debris deeper with a pin, needle, or other sharp object.
- Do not pour liquid into openings, use forceful scraping, or submerge the earbuds or case.
- Do not charge or use wet AirPods until they are fully dry.
- Replace a deformed or damaged AirPods Pro tip rather than trying to reshape it.
If one ear sounds blocked with several headphones or speakers, the cause may be ear-canal blockage or hearing rather than the AirPods.
Check charging and test each earbud
- Put both AirPods in the case and charge them for at least 30 seconds.
- Open the case near the iPhone or iPad and confirm that both earbuds show charging status.
- Test the suspected earbud alone while the other remains in the case.
A dirty contact or depleted battery can cause dropouts, shutdowns, or inconsistent pairing. It does not normally create a steady reduction in speaker output, so persistent quietness after a full charge points elsewhere. Apple’s one-AirPod procedure is documented at one AirPod is not working.
Update software and AirPods firmware
Update the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, or Apple TV to the latest version compatible with that device. Apple’s current guide set covers iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe, watchOS 26, and tvOS 26 or later, although labels can change in later releases: AirPods User Guide.

AirPods firmware normally updates automatically while the earbuds are in their case, charging, and within Bluetooth range of a connected Apple device. To view the installed version, connect the AirPods and open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the info button beside them, and scroll to the firmware entry. There is no universal manual update button and no single firmware version that applies to every model.
Reconnect, forget, and reset
Reconnect first
Put the AirPods in the case, close the lid briefly, open it near the source device, and reconnect from Bluetooth settings.
Forget and pair again
- Open Settings > Bluetooth on iPhone or iPad.
- Tap the info button beside the AirPods, choose Forget This Device, and confirm.
- Pair the AirPods again with the case open nearby.
Reset only after the earlier checks
For AirPods with a setup button, place them in the case, close the lid for about 30 seconds, reopen it, then hold the setup button until the status light flashes amber and then white. AirPods Max and newer models have different procedures, so use the model-specific instructions in Apple’s AirPods Support hub.
A reset removes pairing and device-specific configuration. It can clear a corrupted connection state, but it cannot unblock a mesh, repair a damaged driver, correct hearing loss, or fix the source device.

- Active Noise Cancellation blocks outside noise, so you can immerse yourself in music
- Transparency mode for hearing and interacting with the world around you
- Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking places sound all around you
- Adaptive EQ automatically tunes music to your ears
- Three sizes of soft, tapered silicone tips for a customizable fit
Windows PCs
Choose the AirPods as the output in Settings > System > Sound. If Windows offers separate stereo and headset profiles, choose the stereo output for music and test without using the AirPods microphone. Also check the app’s selected output and volume mixer.
Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple TV
Confirm the active output on the device itself, test another app, and compare with another source device. A problem limited to one platform is more likely to be its routing, profile, app, or accessibility setting than an AirPods speaker fault.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
| Symptom | Checks to prioritize |
|---|---|
| Both AirPods quiet everywhere | Active volume, Headphone Safety, Headphone Accommodations, fit, firmware, and reset |
| One AirPod quiet | Speaker mesh, ear tip, balance, charging contact, and individual hardware |
| Quiet only while talking | Conversation Awareness |
| Quiet only in Transparency or Adaptive mode | Loud Sound Reduction, environmental noise, and listening-mode settings |
| Quiet only on Mac | Output selection, headset profile, macOS sound settings, and app output |
| Quiet only in one app | App volume, EQ, normalization, mastering, and output selection |
| Suddenly quiet after a change | Headphone Safety, accessibility profile, Personalized Volume, or Conversation Awareness |
| Quiet and distorted | Blocked mesh, moisture, damaged driver, or service |
| Quiet in one ear with multiple headphones | Consider an ear or hearing issue rather than an AirPods setting |
When service or replacement makes sense
Contact Apple when the same AirPod remains much quieter on multiple devices and apps after cleaning, centered balance, charging, reconnection, and reset. Service is also appropriate for distortion, crackling, liquid or impact damage, abnormal ANC or Transparency, or an earbud that will not charge consistently.
Check coverage, country-specific terms, and serial-number options through Apple’s AirPods Support hub. Free replacement is not guaranteed outside applicable coverage. If only one earbud is defective, ask about an individual replacement before buying a complete new pair.

Replacement ear tips may improve seal and perceived bass for AirPods Pro; Apple lists them at AirPods accessories. A new pair will not fix a phone volume limit, quiet app, wrong balance, or hearing-related symptom. Consider new AirPods only after those causes have been ruled out; Apple’s official product page is AirPods.
Protect your hearing while troubleshooting
Do not keep increasing volume to overcome traffic, machinery, or background conversation. Use a comfortable level, reduce surrounding noise, and take listening breaks. If one ear remains quiet across multiple headphones, or you increasingly need high volume, arrange a hearing evaluation instead of treating the problem as an AirPods fault.
