AirPods 4 vs. AirPods Pro 3: what are the choices?
“AirPods 4” refers to two different models. Only the version named AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation includes ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency, and a wireless charging case. The standard AirPods 4 has no ANC and comes with a USB-C case.

Which fit should you choose?
AirPods 4: an open fit
Both AirPods 4 models use an open-fit design rather than sealing the ear canal with silicone tips. That may suit listeners who dislike in-ear tips, but fit and comfort vary from person to person. Try the fit if possible; the product description alone cannot establish what will feel comfortable to you.

AirPods Pro 3: silicone tips and a seal
Pro 3 includes silicone tips in five sizes: XXS, XS, S, M, and L. The tip-based in-ear design is the main physical distinction from AirPods 4. Choose it if that style feels comfortable to you and you want an in-ear seal; do not assume it will fit everyone better.
How much noise control do you need?
Standard AirPods 4 has no ANC. Both AirPods 4 with ANC and Pro 3 include ANC, Adaptive Audio, and Transparency. Apple says Pro 3 provides “up to 1.5x more Active Noise Cancellation” than AirPods 4 with ANC, based on testing under IEC 60268-24. That is Apple’s qualified manufacturer comparison, not an independent test or a promise that every listener will perceive exactly 1.5 times the cancellation in every setting. Apple’s comparison.

If you want noise control but prefer an open fit, AirPods 4 with ANC is the relevant choice. If you want the in-ear design as well as Apple’s higher stated ANC figure, consider Pro 3. There is no independent listening or fit test behind these recommendations.
Battery life and charging differences
Apple lists up to 5 hours of listening on one charge for standard AirPods 4, up to 4 hours for AirPods 4 with ANC when ANC is active (up to 5 hours with noise control off), and up to 8 hours for Pro 3 with ANC active. These are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed runtimes; actual battery life varies with use and conditions. Apple’s battery estimates and qualifications.

Case charging separates the models, too. Standard AirPods 4’s listed case uses USB-C. The AirPods 4 with ANC case adds wireless charging through Qi and an Apple Watch charger. Pro 3’s case supports USB-C, Qi, MagSafe, and an Apple Watch charger. Apple’s product listing.

Apple lists Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, and Hearing Protection for Pro 3, but availability depends on compatible hardware, software, and—in the case of Hearing Protection—region and language. Hearing Test and Hearing Aid are for adults aged 18 or older using compatible devices and software; Hearing Aid is intended for people with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. Apple states: “The Hearing Aid feature has received FDA authorization.” That authorization statement does not remove Apple’s eligibility and compatibility requirements. Hearing Protection is not suitable for extremely loud impulse sounds such as gunfire, fireworks, or jackhammers, or for sustained sounds louder than 110 dBA, according to Apple. Its September 2025 EN 352 data sheet reports passive mean SNR attenuation of 20.3 dB, with a standard deviation of 1.9 dB, when the device is unpowered or Off mode is selected. Those passive figures do not apply in Transparency, Adaptive Audio, or Noise Cancellation modes, and the sheet warns that protective performance depends on correct fit, maintenance, and battery charge. These earbuds should not be treated as a substitute for properly selected hearing protection in hazardous workplaces or at loud events. Apple’s September 2025 EN 352 data sheet.
Durability and device compatibility
Apple lists an IP54 rating for AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with ANC, and IP57 for Pro 3, under IEC 60529. Apple describes these models as suitable for non-water sports and exercise and cautions that resistance is not permanent. These ratings do not mean the earbuds are waterproof. Apple’s comparison.
AirPods can function as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, but Apple says functionality may be limited. Some advertised capabilities require compatible Apple devices and current software. Apple’s compatibility information.
Which AirPods should you buy?
- Choose AirPods 4 if you want the open-fit design, do not need ANC, and want the lowest Apple list price among these three options.
- Choose AirPods 4 with ANC if you want noise control and an open fit, and would rather pay less than Apple’s listed price for Pro 3.
- Choose AirPods Pro 3 if you prefer silicone tips, want Apple’s higher stated ANC performance, want the longer listed single-charge listening time with ANC active, or have a compatible use for its hearing features.
