AirPods Pro 4 has not been announced, but a fresh report says Apple is considering two versions: a standard model and a higher-end tier with a metallic silver-gray exterior. The premium design may initially be limited to the United States. Those details come from a leaker and remain unverified.
Separately, recurring reports and software references point to camera-equipped AirPods in development. Bloomberg reporting cited by 9to5Mac places that project on track for 2027, rather than 2026. The cameras are described as environmental sensors for Siri and other AI features—not as conventional cameras for taking photos or video.

What the two-model rumor actually says
On October 14, 2026, Antutu reported claims from the leaker earlyappleleaks that Apple may divide AirPods Pro 4 into high and low versions. The higher-end version is said to use a metallic silver-gray finish covering both the stem and earbud body. The report also says Apple could initially sell that version only in the United States.

How this might fit Apple’s existing lineup
MacRumors reporting in 2026 cited $129 and $179 price points for the two AirPods 4 versions as a precedent for offering different feature tiers. That precedent does not establish AirPods Pro 4 pricing. No price for either rumored Pro 4 model has been reported reliably.
Two camera-AirPods projects are reportedly in development
August 2026 reporting from 9to5Mac, based on macOS 26.7 code and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, described two internal projects:
Rank #2
- Active Noise Cancellation blocks outside noise, so you can immerse yourself in music
- Transparency mode for hearing and interacting with the world around you
- Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking places sound all around you
- Adaptive EQ automatically tunes music to your ears
- Three sizes of soft, tapered silicone tips for a customizable fit
| Project | Reported relationship | What is known |
|---|---|---|
| B790 | Modified AirPods Pro 3 | Reportedly one route for adding camera-based sensing to the current design; specifications and release plans are unconfirmed. |
| B798 | New-generation AirPods Pro design | Reportedly closer to a future AirPods Pro 4 generation; specifications and release plans are unconfirmed. |
The reports do not prove that B790 and B798 are the same products as the rumored low- and high-end AirPods Pro 4 tiers. They may be separate development paths, and Apple could cancel, rename or change either project before release.

What the reported cameras would do
Software references reportedly call the system a “Kino Sensor” and describe cameras paired across the two earbuds. The intended role is to scan surroundings and provide context to Siri or other AI tools, rather than record ordinary video.

Reported capture modes
- Active capture: a 640×640 image can be processed into a 1024×1024 frame, according to the software findings reported by 9to5Mac.
- Passive capture: a lower-resolution 320×320 capture can produce 320×320 or 512×512 output.
- Privacy indicator: the references include a light intended to show when visual sensing is active.
Possible triggers and controls
Passive sensing is reportedly able to react to ambient speech, changes in the audio scene, posture changes, head rotation and movement outside a defined spatial radius. These behaviors could let an AI assistant understand that a wearer has turned toward an object, changed position or entered a different environment. The reports do not establish how users would enable the feature, how long images would be retained or whether processing would happen on the earbuds, an iPhone or a cloud service.
Earlier reporting from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, cited by MacRumors, described at least one tiny infrared camera for gesture control and possible Vision Pro spatial-audio applications. Later software references describe a camera in each bud, but Apple has not confirmed the hardware configuration.

When could camera-equipped AirPods arrive?
The schedule has shifted in public reporting. MacRumors cited early 2026 expectations for an AirPods Pro successor with an infrared camera. By August, Bloomberg reporting reproduced by 9to5Mac said the camera-equipped product “remains on track for 2027.” That is a reported internal target, not a guaranteed release date.

The 2027 timing may refer to the camera project rather than every AirPods Pro 4 model. Apple could launch a conventional Pro 4 first, introduce camera hardware later, or never ship either design.

Should you buy AirPods Pro 3 or wait?
Buy now: AirPods Pro 3 is the current product readers can actually purchase and the baseline associated with the reported B790 project. MacRumors cited a current price of $249 in 2026. Search for “AirPods Pro 3” when checking current retailer stock; prices and promotions can change.
Wait: Hold off if a metallic finish, camera-based environmental awareness or possible AI and gesture features matter more than having a confirmed product today. Waiting could extend into 2027, and none of those features is guaranteed to ship.
What to watch for in an official announcement
- Whether Apple announces one AirPods Pro 4 or separate standard and premium models.
- Whether the metallic silver-gray exterior is real, and whether it is restricted to the United States.
- Exact camera placement, infrared capability and whether both earbuds contain sensors.
- How the privacy light works, what passive capture records and where processing occurs.
- Pricing, battery impact, compatibility with iPhone and Vision Pro, and a firm release date.
Until Apple publishes specifications, the safest conclusion is that two AirPods Pro 4 tiers are being considered, while camera-equipped AirPods remain a separate, unconfirmed project reportedly aimed at 2027.
