Hearing Test and Hearing Aid are available on both generations, so those features alone are not a reason to upgrade.

Apple’s Pro 3 battery figures are estimates: up to 8 hours on one charge with ANC, or up to 7.5 hours with Spatial Audio and head tracking. Apple’s comparison rates Pro 2 at up to 5 hours with ANC. Treat these as Apple’s stated figures, not a guarantee for every listening pattern.

How much better is noise cancellation?
Apple says AirPods Pro 3 removes up to 2× more noise than the previous generation. That multiplier is a manufacturer comparison claim, not an independent measurement. Apple’s September 9, 2025 announcement described its testing as conducted in July 2025 with AirPods Pro 3 paired with an iPhone 16, prerelease firmware and iOS 26. Apple executive John Ternus also called Pro 3’s noise cancellation “the world’s best ANC of any in-ear wireless headphones”; that superlative is Apple’s promotional claim, not an independently established ranking.

If stronger noise cancellation is a priority, Pro 3 is the generation Apple positions as an improvement. The available figures do not establish how much better it will seem in your particular surroundings or to your ears.

Do the hearing features require AirPods Pro 3?
No. Apple lists Hearing Test and Hearing Aid for both Pro 2 and Pro 3. Its Pro 3 announcement says those features work on both generations with current firmware and a compatible iPhone or iPad. Pro 3 adds a distinct announced improvement: automatic Conversation Boost while using Hearing Aid. Check Apple’s current compatibility and regional support information before relying on a specific hearing function.
Should you upgrade from AirPods Pro 2?
Consider Pro 3 if you want a specific improvement
- You want workout heart-rate sensing in your earbuds.
- You value Apple’s stated improvement in active noise cancellation.
- You often need more listening time between charges and the longer Apple estimate suits your use.
- Your Pro 2 fit is unsatisfactory, and you can confirm Pro 3’s fit works better for you.
- You expect to use a Pro 3-specific feature such as automatic Conversation Boost with Hearing Aid.
Keep Pro 2 if it already does the job
- Your earbuds fit comfortably and their noise cancellation and sound meet your needs.
- Your listening routine does not require the longer stated battery estimate.
- You do not need workout heart-rate sensing or another Pro 3-specific change.
- The current local price of Pro 3 outweighs the value you place on its differences.
How to decide whether the price is worth it
There is no universal upgrade price threshold established by Apple’s product information. Compare the current price of Pro 3 where you live with the condition and remaining value of your Pro 2, then weigh that cost against the features you will actually use. If fit is your main reason for changing, try Pro 3 or use a retailer’s return policy where available; Apple’s fit claims and extra tip sizes cannot predict individual comfort.
