For most people buying new Apple Pro earbuds, AirPods Pro 3 are the stronger pick: Apple lists improved noise cancellation, a workout heart-rate sensor, an IP57 rating and longer listening time per charge. AirPods Pro 2 still make sense if you find them at a substantial discount, know their fit works for you, or value longer total listening time with the case. The biggest practical trade-offs are fit and battery: Pro 3 lasts longer between charges, while Pro 2 has the higher case-inclusive estimate.

Apple’s noise-cancellation figures are company claims, not a promise of the same perceived improvement for every listener. Apple’s specifications and comparison page provide the listed figures.

How much better is Pro 3 noise cancellation?
Apple describes Pro 3 as removing up to twice as much unwanted noise as Pro 2 on its product page. Its model-comparison footnote gives a more specific figure: up to 1.5x more active noise cancellation than the previous generation when tested in accordance with IEC 60268-24. Keep the qualification in mind: “up to” is a maximum claim under a stated test method, not a guarantee that every sound or setting will seem 1.5 times quieter.

Apple says Pro 3 adds a multiport acoustic architecture, an upgraded acoustic seal and ultra-low-noise microphones. In its January 16, 2026 comparison, What Hi-Fi? reported that its reviewers heard stronger cancellation of low- and mid-frequency noise from Pro 3, and described it as clearer, more spacious and more powerful sounding. Those are that publication’s subjective listening findings, not independent laboratory measurements or a guarantee of how every listener will hear them. Its reviewers found both models enjoyable.
Battery: choose between longer sessions and longer time with the case
With active noise cancellation enabled, Apple estimates up to 8 hours of listening per charge for Pro 3 and up to 6 hours for Pro 2. With the charging case, the estimates reverse: up to 24 hours for Pro 3 and up to 30 hours for Pro 2. So Pro 3 is the better match if you want fewer earbud recharges during a long stretch of listening; Pro 2 has the edge if you are comparing the manufacturer’s total case-inclusive estimate.

Fit and tips: Pro 3 offers more sizes, not guaranteed better comfort
Pro 3 includes five silicone tip sizes—XXS, XS, S, M and L—while What Hi-Fi? reports that Pro 2 included four. The shape and tips have changed, but fit remains personal: What Hi-Fi?’s reviewers found more than one size secure for them, while acknowledging that some people may prefer the older model’s fit.

Try the included sizes and use Apple’s fit test rather than assuming the newer shape will suit you. If you need replacement tips, confirm compatibility with your exact AirPods generation; the models’ tips should not be assumed interchangeable. Pro 3’s USB-C charging cable is sold separately, according to Apple’s specifications.
New features, shared features and software requirements
Workout heart-rate sensor
Pro 3 adds a built-in heart-rate monitor for workouts. Apple says it is intended to work with Fitness and compatible third-party iPhone apps running iOS 26 or later. This is a concrete reason to favor Pro 3 if you want heart-rate sensing from earbuds during exercise.
Rank #4
- Active Noise Cancellation blocks outside noise, so you can immerse yourself in music
- Transparency mode for hearing and interacting with the world around you
- Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking places sound all around you
- Adaptive EQ automatically tunes music to your ears
- Three sizes of soft, tapered silicone tips for a customizable fit
Live Translation and hearing features
Live Translation is listed for both Pro 3 and Pro 2, so it is not an exclusive upgrade reason. Apple says it requires compatible Apple devices and current software, with Apple Intelligence enabled; language and regional availability can vary. Apple also lists Hearing Test, Hearing Aid and Hearing Protection for Pro 2 and later, subject to device, age, firmware and regional conditions. Check the current Apple comparison and its footnotes for the requirements that apply to your devices and location.
Durability: IP57 versus IP54, neither waterproof
Apple specifies IP57 dust, sweat and water resistance for Pro 3 and its case; its comparison lists Pro 2 at IP54. These ratings do not make either model waterproof. Apple cautions that resistance can decline through normal wear, describes the earbuds as intended for non-water sports and exercise, and advises against charging them when wet. See Apple’s support specifications and comparison page.

Which should you buy?
Choose AirPods Pro 3 if…
- You are buying new and want Apple’s newer Pro model, with its workout heart-rate sensor and IP57 resistance rating.
- You prefer Apple’s longer per-charge ANC estimate: up to 8 hours rather than Pro 2’s up to 6.
- You want the newer noise-cancellation design and are comfortable with Apple’s qualified performance claim.
- You have tried the fit or are willing to test the five included tip sizes.
Apple’s US product page lists AirPods Pro 3 at $249 as of October 4, 2026. That is a US-listed price, not a global price; local prices and retailer offers can differ.
Choose AirPods Pro 2 if…
- You find them substantially cheaper than Pro 3 and the savings matter more than the newer features.
- You already know their fit is comfortable and do not want to gamble on a changed shape.
- You prioritize Apple’s higher case-inclusive estimate: up to 30 hours, compared with Pro 3’s up to 24.
Pro 2 listings can vary by stock and case connector. Check whether a listing is for the USB-C case or an older Lightning version, as well as the seller and current price, before buying.
If you already own Pro 2
Upgrade if the heart-rate sensor, IP57 rating or longer per-charge estimate would change how you use your earbuds, or if you particularly value the newer noise-cancellation design. If your Pro 2 still works well and fits comfortably, the differences described here do not by themselves make replacement necessary; the decision depends on what the upgrade would add to your routine.
