This updates the May 2025 AppleInsider forum comparison, which compared Sony’s XM6 with the first-generation USB-C AirPods Max. Apple released AirPods Max 2 in 2026, so the older model’s H1-based specifications and conclusion are no longer the right basis for a new purchase.

What is being compared?
The current matchup is Apple AirPods Max 2 (2026) against Sony WH-1000XM6 (2025). The older USB-C AirPods Max remains relevant only when clearance pricing is substantial; it should not be silently substituted for Max 2. The original Lightning model is principally a used or clearance option.

Apple announced Max 2 on March 16, 2026; U.S. orders began March 25 and deliveries and store availability began in early April. Prices and promotions change, so treat the figures above as dated signals rather than permanent sale promises. Apple’s announcement and Sony’s product page are the appropriate places to check today’s price.

- Best overall value and frequent-travel choice: Sony WH-1000XM6.
- Best for iPhone, Mac, iPad and Apple TV owners: AirPods Max 2.

Design, weight and comfort
AirPods Max 2
Max 2 retains Apple’s aluminum earcups and mesh canopy, with a Smart Case and five listed colors: Midnight, Starlight, Blue, Purple and Orange. At 386.2 grams, it is a heavy over-ear headphone. It does not fold into a compact travel shape.
Sony WH-1000XM6
The XM6 is dramatically lighter in the AppleInsider comparison, folds into a more travel-friendly case and uses physical buttons. Its synthetic-leather headband and replaceable-style ear-pad design favor practical commuting and long work sessions.
Neither model is universally more comfortable. Ear shape, head size, glasses, hair, clamp pressure, heat and whether your ears touch the internal parts all matter. Larger Apple cups may suit some ears, while Sony’s lower weight helps during an eight-hour shift. If fit is your deciding factor, buy from a seller with a meaningful return window.
Noise cancellation and transparency
Sony combines its QN3 HD Noise Canceling Processor, 12 microphones, Adaptive NC Optimizer and real-time adjustment for environmental noise, air pressure and fit. AirPods Max 2 uses an H2 chip in each cup, eight ANC microphones and Apple’s Adaptive Audio, Transparency, Conversation Awareness, Personalized Volume and Loud Sound Reduction features.

Independent testing is more useful than processor or microphone counts alone. RTINGS’ comparison gives the XM6 advantages in several measured categories, including noise attenuation, microphone performance and customization, while finding AirPods Max more consistent in sound reproduction between reseats. Choose Sony when maximum isolation and adjustable ANC behavior are priorities. Choose Apple when its adaptive listening modes and system integration matter more. Glasses, hair and an imperfect seal can change either result.
Sound, codecs and spatial audio
AirPods Max 2

AirPods Max 2’s lossless claim applies to compatible wired USB-C playback, not Bluetooth. LDAC is higher-bandwidth compressed wireless audio, not lossless transmission. A fair listening comparison should volume-match both headphones and disclose whether EQ, DSEE, spatial audio or other processing is active. “Better sound” remains dependent on tuning preference, fit, content and processing.

Apple’s figure is with ANC enabled; Sony’s is up to 30 hours with Bluetooth and noise cancellation enabled. Calls, volume, spatial audio, codec choice and temperature can reduce actual runtime. Sony is the safer choice for long-haul travel and users who dislike daily charging. Max 2 is adequate for a normal day but short for a 2026 flagship.

Connectivity: Apple switching versus Sony multipoint
AirPods Max 2 and Apple devices
With iPhone, Mac, iPad and Apple TV, Max 2 offers quick setup, automatic switching, Find My integration where supported, system-level controls, Siri and spatial-audio features. It uses Bluetooth 5.3 and also supports USB-C wired audio. Apple’s automatic switching is not the same as conventional cross-platform multipoint: its main advantage is within the Apple ecosystem.
XM6 and mixed platforms
Sony supports two-device multipoint, Windows and Android, iPhone compatibility, LDAC, LE Audio and Auracast readiness through its current product generation. The Sound Connect app provides EQ, ANC settings and firmware controls. This is the clearer solution for a Windows laptop plus phone, an Android-and-iPad household or anyone who frequently switches between work devices. Sony’s product information lists the connectivity features.
Sony does work with iPhone; it simply does not reproduce Apple’s same level of system integration. RTINGS also treats compatibility and customization as XM6 strengths. Independent comparison.

Apple specifies nine microphones in total: eight for ANC and three for voice pickup, with two shared between functions. Sony uses a six-microphone array with AI beamforming in the comparison coverage and emphasizes improved call quality. Counts do not establish call performance. Evaluate quiet-room calls, wind, traffic, trains and airplane noise in Teams, Zoom, FaceTime and ordinary phone calls before relying on either for critical work.

Max 2 uses the Digital Crown for volume and playback and a listening-mode button, with Siri, Conversation Awareness, Adaptive Audio, camera-remote functions and other Apple controls. Live Translation is conditional: Apple’s support documentation requires compatible Apple Intelligence hardware and software, including an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone running iOS 26.4 or later for the cited regional specification, with language and regional availability also applying. Check Apple’s current requirements.
XM6 uses physical power and noise-control buttons, Sound Connect customization, Speak-to-Chat, adaptive ambient functions and selected head-gesture controls. App versions, firmware, phone software and language support can affect availability.

AirPods Max 2 is the stronger documented option for USB-C wired workflows: Apple specifies 24-bit/48 kHz lossless and ultra-low-latency audio over USB-C with compatible content and applications. Bluetooth remains non-lossless. Sony’s LDAC is useful for wireless high-resolution playback but is not a substitute for wired lossless transmission.

Apple TV, films and spatial audio
AirPods Max 2 is the natural choice for an all-Apple living room. Personalized Spatial Audio and dynamic head tracking can create a more cinematic experience with compatible Dolby Atmos and other supported content on Apple hardware. Setup is simplest when the listener already owns the required iPhone or other Apple devices.
Sony can play movies from many platforms and offers app-based spatial-audio-related features, but it does not provide the same Apple TV-level integration. If you mainly watch on a Windows PC, Android tablet or multiple streaming devices, XM6’s compatibility and multipoint are more practical than Apple’s ecosystem benefits.
Ownership, accessories and repair considerations
- Both use USB-C charging; carry the correct cable and any airline adapter required by your source device.
- Ear-pad replacement availability, case protection and long-term battery service should be checked before purchase.
- Apple offers AppleCare options that can include accident coverage, eligible theft or loss protection, battery service and 24/7 expert support; coverage and pricing vary by country and product. Verify the terms for your region.
- Keep the return policy in mind because comfort cannot be settled from specifications.
Which one should you buy?
Choose AirPods Max 2 when
- Your main devices are iPhone, Mac, iPad and Apple TV.
- Automatic Apple-device switching, Siri and system controls matter more than universal multipoint.
- Personalized Spatial Audio is a primary reason to buy.
- You need wired USB-C lossless or ultra-low-latency audio.
- You accept the 386.2-gram weight, non-folding design and higher starting price.
Choose Sony WH-1000XM6 when
- You use Windows, Android, iPhone or a combination.
- Two-device multipoint, folding storage and lower weight are important.
- You travel often or want up to 30 hours of ANC-rated battery life.
- You want app EQ, LDAC and broader sound customization.
- You want the stronger value at Sony’s cited official price.
Try both before buying when
- You wear over-ear headphones for eight or more hours.
- You have a small head, wear glasses or are sensitive to clamp pressure and heat.
- You need dependable gaming-chat performance or a true analog wired setup.
- You expect passive audiophile performance without battery power or digital processing.
Bottom line
AirPods Max 2 is not simply a more expensive XM6 and Sony is not automatically the better headphone. Buy Max 2 for Apple’s seamless device behavior, Apple TV spatial audio and USB-C lossless/low-latency capability. Buy the WH-1000XM6 for the lower official price signal, lighter folding design, longer battery, multipoint and cross-platform flexibility. Check current prices on publication day, and do not buy either without a return option if comfort is uncertain.
