Apple’s current over-ear headphones are AirPods Max 2, listed at $549 in the U.S. They combine active noise cancellation, Transparency, Adaptive Audio, Personalized Spatial Audio and wired USB-C lossless audio, but their 386.2 g weight, up-to-20-hour advertised battery life and premium price are meaningful tradeoffs. The 2024 USB-C AirPods Max is a different, earlier generation with H1 chips; Max 2 uses H2 chips.
What you get with AirPods Max 2
Apple’s current product page identifies AirPods Max 2 as the latest model. Its feature set is strongest for people who use Apple devices and want multiple listening and call modes in one pair of over-ear headphones.

- Listening modes: Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), Transparency, Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness.
- Personalized sound: Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking and Adaptive EQ.
- Apple-device features: Siri functions, Voice Isolation and Live Translation. Availability can depend on compatible hardware, software, languages and region. Apple says Live Translation requires a compatible Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone running iOS 26.4 or later and is limited to select languages and regions.
- USB-C: The headphones charge over USB-C and support wired lossless and ultra-low-latency audio under the conditions described below.
Apple advertises up to 1.5 times more ANC than the original AirPods Max. That is Apple’s product claim, not an independent comparative test result.

Flexible noise control and spatial audio
ANC, Transparency and Adaptive Audio let listeners choose how much outside sound to block or hear. Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking and Adaptive EQ add options for supported content and listening setups. These features are particularly relevant to buyers already using Apple devices, where more of the ecosystem-specific functions are available.

Wired lossless audio over USB-C
AirPods Max 2 supports lossless and ultra-low-latency audio through a wired USB-C connection. You need compatible content and a supported app or service; Bluetooth listening is not lossless. Apple also added wired 24-bit/48 kHz lossless and ultra-low-latency support to the 2024 USB-C AirPods Max through a firmware update announced in March 2025, so wired lossless is not exclusive to Max 2.
If you need to connect to a 3.5 mm audio output, Apple describes a USB-C to 3.5 mm audio cable for that purpose. Apple announced a U.S. price of $39 in March 2025; that is a historical announcement price, not a verified current price.
Apple’s advertised charging and battery figures
Apple specifies up to 20 hours of listening on a full charge with ANC enabled and says five minutes of charging can provide around 1.5 hours of listening. These are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed results for every volume level, content type, connection or listening pattern. Apple lists USB-C charging.

The drawbacks to weigh
They are heavy
Apple lists AirPods Max 2 at 386.2 g (13.6 oz). RTINGS describes the headphones as heavy and bulky, and Macworld also identifies weight as a drawback. Fit and comfort vary by person, so try them on if possible—especially if you plan to wear over-ear headphones for long stretches.
Twenty hours may not be enough for every buyer
The maximum Apple lists is 20 hours with ANC enabled. Macworld’s June 24, 2026 review says this trails some competing models; that is a review-date-specific comparison, not a guarantee about every rival’s current battery rating. If long stretches away from charging matter to you, compare current battery claims under similar conditions before buying.
The Smart Case and power behavior divide opinion
Apple says storing the headphones in the Smart Case puts them in an ultra-low-power state that preserves charge. Macworld criticizes the case and battery management, including the inability to deliberately turn the headphones off. That is the reviewer’s practical assessment; the official low-power description does not mean the headphones are completely powered down.

The price is high
Apple’s U.S. listing shows AirPods Max 2 at $549. That figure applies to Apple’s U.S. listing, not necessarily to other countries or other sellers. At this price, value depends on how much you will use the listening modes, wired audio and Apple-specific features, as well as whether the weight and battery limit fit your habits.

AirPods Max 2 versus the 2024 USB-C AirPods Max
Check the generation before comparing listings: the names can look similar, but the chip generation differs. Apple’s 2024 USB-C model uses H1 chips in each ear cup; AirPods Max 2 uses H2 chips. Apple’s support page lists both models at 386.2 g and up to 20 hours of listening with ANC, so the newer generation does not change those headline figures.
| Detail | AirPods Max 2 | AirPods Max (USB-C, 2024) |
|---|---|---|
| Chip | H2, according to Apple’s current technical specifications. | H1 in each ear cup, according to Apple Support. |
| Listed weight | 386.2 g (13.6 oz), Apple specification. | 386.2 g, Apple Support specification. |
| Battery estimate with ANC | Up to 20 hours, Apple estimate. | Up to 20 hours, Apple Support estimate. |
| Wired USB-C audio | Lossless and ultra-low-latency audio with compatible content and supported apps or services, per Apple. | Wired 24-bit/48 kHz lossless and ultra-low-latency support following the firmware update Apple announced in March 2025. |
| Current U.S. Apple listing price | $549, according to Apple’s current product listing. | Not stated on the cited current-model listing; check a current local listing. |
Do not assume a seller’s “USB-C AirPods Max” listing is Max 2. Confirm the generation and chip details, and compare the actual current price of the older model before deciding whether an upgrade is worthwhile.

Will they work with Android or Windows?
Apple says AirPods can work as wireless Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, but functionality may be limited. Do not expect the complete set of Apple ecosystem features on Android or Windows. If you primarily use a non-Apple device, confirm that the functions you care about work with it before paying a premium for the Apple-specific experience.
Who should buy them?
AirPods Max 2 may suit you if
- You use Apple devices and value the available Apple-specific listening, call and assistant features.
- You want ANC, Transparency and Adaptive Audio options in an over-ear design.
- You will use wired USB-C lossless audio and have compatible content and apps.
- The listed weight and 20-hour maximum battery estimate fit your typical listening routine.
Consider another option if
- You prioritize a lighter or less bulky headset, or cannot try the fit before buying.
- You need longer battery life than Apple’s up-to-20-hour ANC estimate.
- You mainly use Android or Windows and would not benefit from the Apple-specific feature set.
- You want wireless lossless listening: Apple’s lossless specification for these headphones requires a wired USB-C connection.
- The $549 U.S. Apple price does not make sense for your budget or likely use.
For buyers considering the 2024 USB-C model instead, compare its actual current price and confirm the generation. Its wired lossless support was added by firmware update, but it has H1 rather than H2 chips.
