1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe right AirPods choice starts with fit, not generation number. Choose AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation if you want an open-fit earbud and noise control, AirPods Pro 3 if you want silicone tips and the most complete in-ear feature set, or AirPods Max 2 if you want over-ear headphones. AirPods 5 suit listeners who prefer an open fit without making ANC the priority. Older models remain on Apple’s comparison page, but their current price, stock, condition and support horizon depend on the exact seller and market.

Start with the physical fit
Open-fit AirPods 4 and AirPods 5
Open-fit earbuds rest at the entrance of the ear rather than sealing the canal with a replaceable tip. That can feel more natural to people who dislike pressure or the plugged-up sensation of in-ear earbuds. It also means the fit is more dependent on your ear shape: movement, wind and surrounding noise can affect how secure and immersive they feel.

AirPods 5 are the open-fit alternative when a simpler listening experience is more important than noise cancellation. Do not assume that the presence of an H2 chip makes the two models interchangeable; case features and the listed noise-control capabilities differ by exact variant.

Silicone-tip AirPods Pro 3
AirPods Pro 3 seal the ear canal with silicone tips. Apple lists five sizes—XXS, XS, S, M and L—so you can tune the seal for comfort and noise isolation. A correct seal is essential: an incorrectly sized tip can make ANC seem weak, reduce bass and become uncomfortable, while a good seal can improve both passive isolation and perceived sound.
Choose this design if you are comfortable with an in-ear seal and want the listed Pro features. If you dislike anything inside the ear canal, the additional tip choices will not change the fundamental form factor; an open-fit model is the more sensible starting point.
Over-ear AirPods Max 2
AirPods Max 2 surround the ears with cushioned earcups instead of sitting in or on the ear like the earbuds. Select them for the over-ear experience—larger earcups, a different sense of isolation and a headband—rather than treating them as a higher-numbered earbud generation. Their weight, size and heat during long sessions are personal considerations that a specification table cannot settle, so try the fit when possible.

Noise cancellation: what the claims mean
Active Noise Cancellation uses microphones and signal processing to reduce external sound. Transparency modes do the opposite by allowing environmental sound through, while Adaptive Audio adjusts the balance between isolation and awareness. Apple lists ANC and Adaptive Audio for AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation and ANC for AirPods Pro 3; verify the exact model page or listing for the modes offered by any other variant.
Apple states that AirPods Pro 3 deliver up to twice as much ANC as the original AirPods Pro and AirPods 4 with ANC. That is Apple’s comparative claim, not an independent laboratory result. The footnote attributes the comparison to Apple testing under IEC 60268-24 conditions, so it should be read as a controlled manufacturer comparison rather than a guarantee that every listener will hear a twofold improvement.

And you can track down your AirPods and Charging Case with the Find My app.*
- LONG BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 5 hours of listening time on a single charge. And get up to 30 hours of total listening time using the case.*
ANC performance also depends on seal and sound type. Low, steady sounds such as engine rumble are generally easier for an ANC system to reduce than sudden voices or high-frequency clatter. With open-fit earbuds, the lack of a sealed tip can limit how isolated you feel even when ANC is active. Decide whether you value a natural ear opening or maximum isolation before comparing marketing percentages.
Battery life and charging cases
Apple’s figures are “up to” estimates, not a promise for every listening session. The company says battery life varies with device settings, environment, usage and other factors. Volume, call time, wireless features and temperature can all change the result, so compare the figures as guidance rather than as a guaranteed runtime.
| Model | Apple-listed battery figure | Case or charging detail |
|---|---|---|
| AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation | Up to 4 hours per charge with ANC | Up to 20 hours with the case; USB-C wireless-charging case variant. |
| AirPods Pro 3 | Up to 8 hours per charge with ANC | Case listed with MagSafe and USB-C charging, plus a speaker. |
| AirPods Max 2 | Up to 20 hours with ANC enabled | Over-ear headphones; the cited figure is for ANC-enabled use. |
Per-charge and total-with-case numbers answer different questions. Per-charge runtime tells you how long the earbuds can stay out of the case; the case total indicates how much listening you can recover between wall charges. Do not compare an earbud’s per-charge number directly with an over-ear headphone’s case-free figure.
Case variants matter even within one family. Apple lists AirPods 5 with a standard USB-C case and a distinct Wireless Charging Case version, while AirPods 4 with ANC have a USB-C wireless-charging case variant. Before ordering, confirm whether the exact box includes the charging method you use, rather than relying on a model name that may cover multiple bundles.
Water and dust resistance: useful, not waterproof
Apple lists IP54 for AirPods 4 variants and IP57 for AirPods Pro 3. Those ratings indicate resistance tested under controlled conditions; they do not make the earbuds waterproof. Apple’s caveat limits the intended use to non-water sports and exercise and says resistance can decrease with wear.

- Use the rating as protection against sweat and incidental splashes, not swimming or showering.
- Keep charging contacts and the case dry before charging.
- Expect an older pair with worn seals or impact damage to offer less protection than a new pair tested in controlled conditions.
Special features and device compatibility
AirPods features are not determined only by the earbud hardware. Hearing assistance, Spatial Audio and newer software functions can require compatible Apple hardware, a supported operating-system version or eligibility conditions. A feature shown in a product description may therefore be unavailable on an older iPhone, iPad or Mac, or may work differently outside Apple’s ecosystem.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check compatibility for the specific feature you care about before purchase. Pairing an AirPods model with a supported Apple device does not automatically mean every advertised function is enabled. Conversely, basic audio use may still be possible on a wider range of Bluetooth devices, but the full feature set can be narrower.
How to choose between the current models
Choose AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation when
- You want the open-fit shape and do not want silicone tips.
- You regularly need ANC or Adaptive Audio.
- You are willing to accept the shorter Apple-listed earbud runtime that comes with ANC use.
- A USB-C wireless-charging case fits your setup.
This is the most direct fit for someone who wants noise control without moving to a sealed in-ear design.
Choose AirPods Pro 3 when
- You are comfortable with an in-ear seal.
- You want five tip sizes to refine comfort and isolation.
- You prioritize the listed Pro noise-control features and the higher Apple-listed per-charge figure with ANC.
- You need the case’s listed MagSafe and USB-C charging options and speaker.
- You value the stronger ANC claim Apple makes for this model relative to its named comparison products.
The trade-off is physical: the Pro experience depends on tolerating and correctly fitting silicone tips.
Choose AirPods Max 2 when
- You specifically want over-ear headphones rather than earbuds.
- You prefer an earcup and headband design for longer listening sessions.
- You want Apple’s listed 20-hour ANC-enabled battery figure in an over-ear format.
Do not select Max 2 simply because its number is higher. It belongs to a different product category, with different portability and fit considerations.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check when considering older generations
Apple’s comparison includes AirPods (2nd generation), AirPods (3rd generation), AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Max alongside the newer models. Their appearance on a comparison page does not prove that every generation is still sold new in your country. It also does not establish a current price, battery condition, repair coverage or how long software support will continue.
- Identify the exact generation and case variant in the seller’s title and photos.
- Confirm whether the item is new, refurbished or used, and ask how battery condition is represented.
- Check which charging connector and wireless-charging functions are included.
- Verify that the device and operating-system requirements for your desired features are supported.
- Compare the seller’s return policy and warranty before treating an older model as a bargain.
An older pair can make sense when the price and condition are clearly favorable, but a generation number alone is not enough evidence of value.
Common buying mistakes
Choosing by number instead of fit
A newer generation cannot compensate for an earbud that will not stay in place or a tip that irritates your ear. Decide open fit, silicone tip or over-ear first, then compare features inside that category.

Calling a resistance rating waterproof
IP54 and IP57 are resistance ratings under controlled testing. They are not permission to swim, shower or deliberately submerge the earbuds.
Treating Apple’s ANC comparison as independent testing
The “up to 2x” statement is Apple’s own result under a specified IEC test. It does not predict an identical improvement for every ear shape, noise source or listening level.
Assuming a feature works on every device
Check supported hardware, operating systems and eligibility for hearing assistance, Spatial Audio and newer software functions before buying for a particular feature.
A practical decision path
- Pick the form factor: open-fit AirPods 4 or 5, silicone-tip Pro 3, or over-ear Max 2.
- Set the noise-control requirement: if ANC is essential, compare AirPods 4 with ANC, Pro 3 or Max 2 according to the chosen form factor.
- Check endurance: compare the relevant per-charge or ANC-enabled figure, remembering that Apple’s numbers are usage-dependent estimates.
- Match the case: verify USB-C, wireless or MagSafe charging and any listed speaker before checkout.
- Validate compatibility: confirm that your Apple hardware and operating system support the features you intend to use.
- For older models, verify condition and support: generation, battery state, seller, warranty and return terms matter more than the label alone.
Following this order prevents a common mismatch: buying a feature-rich model whose physical design you dislike, or selecting a comfortable model whose case and software support do not fit your setup.
