If one AirPod repeatedly dies before the other, first prove whether it is failing to charge or simply being used more. Check both percentages after a known listening period, clean and reseat the charging contacts, test each earbud alone, and set the microphone to Automatic. A repeatable imbalance that survives verified charging, settings checks, a firmware opportunity and a reset usually indicates battery wear, liquid damage or another hardware fault—not a setting that can be repaired.
Why one AirPod loses charge faster
A small difference is normal when the earbuds do different work. The imbalance becomes meaningful when the same side repeatedly drops much farther during comparable use, or when one earbud does not show a charging indicator in the case.

Unequal listening and call use
Using one earbud alone concentrates listening, call and voice-assistant cycles on that battery. Even with both earbuds inserted, one microphone can be selected more often. iFixit notes that one mic may be used disproportionately, causing one side to drain faster. A fixed microphone assignment to the left or right side can make that pattern persistent.

Calls and voice commands can exaggerate the difference because microphones are active for speech pickup, not just music playback. If the imbalance appears mainly after calls, meetings or frequent Siri requests, compare a music-only session with a call-heavy session. The comparison does not prove that a microphone is defective, but it can reveal that one side is doing more work.

A charging-contact or case-bay problem
Lint, skin oil or oxidation on an earbud stem or in its charging bay can prevent a reliable electrical connection. The earbud may look seated while remaining at the same percentage. In that situation the symptom is not rapid discharge; it is incomplete charging that appears as rapid discharge later.
A case can also have a problem limited to one bay. The decisive question is whether the fault follows the physical earbud or remains with the left or right slot. Do not force an earbud into a bay or probe deeply with metal; damage to the contact or charging circuit can turn a simple cleaning issue into a repair.
Features and background activity
Automatic Ear Detection, “Hey Siri,” Find My Network, Spatial Audio and head tracking add activity. Their effect varies by model and operating-system version, so disabling one is a controlled diagnostic test rather than a guaranteed cure. Opening the case repeatedly also wakes the earbuds and updates their status.
Feature testing is most useful after charging has been verified. If a side is not receiving a full charge, turning off Spatial Audio or Siri cannot correct the underlying contact problem. Change one option at a time, repeat the same listening interval, and restore any option that makes no measurable difference.
Battery aging, liquid or hardware failure
Rechargeable cells lose capacity with age and charge cycles. A drop, sweat or liquid exposure can damage a cell, microphone or charging circuit. If the same side still falls rapidly after the checks below, treat it as a hardware problem.
There is no universal percentage gap that proves failure. A repeatable result under matched conditions is more useful than a single number, and the advertised maximum for a new product is not a diagnostic threshold for an older one.
First determine what is actually happening
Do not diagnose from a single percentage reading. The displayed value can reflect a momentary charging-state or communication artifact.
- Charge the case, place both earbuds inside and close the lid.
- Open the case beside the paired iPhone or iPad and note the left, right and case percentages.
- Listen for a known interval at your normal volume, then check the percentages again under the same conditions.
- Repeat the observation on another session. A repeatable gap matters more than a one-time mismatch.
Record whether the problem is “does not charge” or “charges but discharges quickly.” Also note the exact AirPods generation, which side is affected, whether the issue follows the earbud or the case bay, and whether the case or earbuds have been exposed to liquid.
Use a controlled comparison
Keep the variables as similar as possible: use the same phone, volume, listening source and approximate temperature. Avoid comparing a quiet music session on one day with a long phone call at high volume on another. Write down the starting and ending percentages and whether the case was connected to power. This simple log helps distinguish a genuine capacity problem from a misleading status update.
For AirPods models that show separate left and right readings, confirm that you are reading the earbud values rather than the case value. If a percentage jumps after opening or closing the lid, wait for the status to settle and repeat the measurement. A one-time jump is not enough evidence to replace a battery.
Fix charging before changing settings
Clean the contacts safely
Remove both earbuds and inspect the metal contacts on each stem and the bottom of each charging bay. Use a dry, lint-free cloth or a small electronics-safe brush. Do not spray liquid, alcohol or compressed cleaner directly into the case. Do not push debris deeper into a bay.

- Replacement Apple AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) (USB-C) AirPod - left side (A3048). Easy to pair with your existing AirPods set, with pairing instructions included.
- Package includes 1 left Apple AirPod Pro 2nd Generation (USB-C) (A3048) and pairing instructions in generic envelope or box.
Work in good light and clean the earbud and the matching bay separately. A dry cleaning kit intended for charging contacts can be useful, but cleaning cannot restore a chemically worn battery. Stop if a contact looks bent, recessed, corroded or damaged rather than trying to reshape it.
Confirm that each side is charging
- Fully charge the case when possible.
- Put both AirPods in the case and let them charge for at least 30 seconds. This is Apple’s first-line procedure.
- Open the lid near the iPhone or iPad and verify that both earbuds show the charging symbol and a rising percentage.
- If one side does not appear as charging, remove and reseat it, gently pressing it down until it sits fully in the bay.
- When the case itself was nearly empty, charge the case with both earbuds inside for at least 15 minutes before judging the result.
If the suspect side only charges when you press or reposition it, the bay or contact is the leading suspect. Try the other earbud in the same bay only long enough to identify whether the fault follows the bay or the earbud; do not force a fit.
Leave both earbuds in the closed case for the charging interval instead of repeatedly opening the lid. Then open it near the paired device and check each side. Apple’s September 17, 2026 support procedure specifically tells users to place both AirPods in the case for 30 seconds and verify their charge. If an AirPod still is not working after these checks, Apple directs users to reset the AirPods.
What the charging result means
- No charging symbol: suspect debris, poor seating, a damaged contact or a case-bay fault first.
- Symbol appears but percentage does not rise: allow a longer charge with the case powered, then inspect the contact again.
- Both sides charge normally but one later drops quickly: move to isolation, microphone and battery-wear tests.
- The fault follows the bay: the case is more likely at fault than the earbud.
- The fault follows the earbud: the earbud cell, electronics or liquid exposure becomes more likely.
Test each earbud by itself
Isolation separates an earbud fault from a pairing or case-bay fault.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Put the suspect AirPod in your ear and leave the other AirPod in the closed case.
- Play the same audio at the same volume for a measured interval.
- Check the suspect side’s percentage, then repeat with the opposite side while leaving the first in the case.
If the suspect earbud drains quickly while operating alone, the issue follows the earbud. If it performs normally alone but fails to charge in one particular bay, investigate the case contact or bay. If the percentage changes erratically only when the case is opened, repeat the test after a full charge and a reset.
Repeat the test with the earbuds swapped between ears only if fit or accidental touch controls could have changed the workload. The key comparison is one earbud operating while the other remains in the closed case, followed by the reverse arrangement. This also answers whether the problem is tied to the left/right side or to the case slot.
Correct microphone and usage settings
Set the microphone to Automatic
- Open Settings on the iPhone or iPad.
- Tap Bluetooth, then the information button beside your AirPods.
- Open Microphone and choose Automatic, not a permanently forced left or right microphone.
Automatic lets the system choose the available side instead of repeatedly assigning call and voice-assistant work to one battery. If you deliberately force one side, expect that side to perform more microphone work during calls and voice commands.
Alternate one-ear use
If you routinely use only one AirPod, alternate sides between sessions and return the unused earbud to the case. This evens out charge cycles. Keep both earbuds in the case whenever you are not listening; leaving one on a desk still allows standby drain and makes it easier to misplace.

It also makes a future comparison fairer because both sides have a more similar use pattern.
Test optional features one at a time
After charging is verified, change only one feature, then repeat the same listening test:
- Automatic Ear Detection: temporarily turn it off to see whether repeated in-ear/out-of-ear detection is involved.
- Find My Network: temporarily disable it if your model and operating system offer the switch and you accept reduced finding capability.
- Spatial Audio and head tracking: test with them off; compatible models can use more power when these effects are active.
- “Hey Siri”: test with voice activation disabled if Siri listening is frequent in your environment.
Restore any feature that does not affect the measured drain. These switches are diagnostic controls, not proof that a feature is defective. Feature availability differs by generation and operating system, so a missing switch does not by itself indicate a fault.

Give firmware a chance, then reset
Check the installed firmware
AirPods firmware updates install in the background. There is no user-facing “update now” button. Keep the earbuds in their case, connect the case to power, place it near the paired iPhone or iPad, and leave the device connected to Wi-Fi for a period of time. In the AirPods information panel, check the firmware version and compare it with Apple’s currently listed version for your model.
Firmware is worth checking because it can affect charging-state reporting and feature behavior, but waiting for an update is not a substitute for cleaning contacts. If the same side physically fails to charge, solve that evidence first.
Reset and pair again
If charging, isolation and settings checks do not resolve the imbalance, reset the AirPods and pair them again. On the iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information button beside the AirPods and choose Forget This Device. Put both earbuds in the case, close and reopen the lid, then use the case’s setup/reset control according to your model until the status light changes to the pairing pattern. Bring the open case near the device and complete pairing.
A reset clears custom settings, so you will need to restore preferences such as microphone selection and detection features. Apple’s support procedure states: “If an AirPod still isn’t working, reset your AirPods.” After pairing, repeat the same controlled listening test rather than assuming the reset fixed the battery.

What battery life should you expect?
Advertised listening time is a maximum, not a failure threshold. MacRumors reports that AirPods 3 are capable of up to six hours of listening on a single charge and AirPods Pro can reach up to six hours, with lower figures when Spatial Audio or head tracking is enabled. Actual time changes with volume, calls, microphone activity, temperature, fit, firmware and battery age. Use the comparison between your two earbuds under the same session—not the advertised maximum—as the diagnostic baseline.
Recommended Free Tools
For example, an advertised six-hour maximum does not mean every older AirPod should deliver six hours in every call or high-volume session. Nor does a lower result automatically identify the left or right side as defective. The useful question is whether one side consistently performs worse than its matching earbud under the same conditions.

Arrange Apple inspection or another reputable authorized repair option when the same side still loses charge rapidly after clean contacts, confirmed charging, microphone and usage checks, a firmware opportunity and a reset. Persistent loss can mean a chemically worn cell, liquid damage or a failed charging or audio component. Prices and availability depend on model, warranty or AppleCare status, country and service channel.
Check coverage before paying. Apple’s options and prices vary by exact generation and location, and an authorized provider may offer a different service path from an independent repair shop. Ask whether the quote covers the earbud, the case or both; replacing a healthy case is unnecessary if testing shows the problem follows one earbud.
Replacing only one AirPod
A single replacement can be appropriate when the case and the other earbud are healthy. Match the exact generation and the left/right side; visually similar earbuds from different generations are not interchangeable. Put the replacement and the original earbud in the case, charge them, reset if required, and pair the set with the iPhone or iPad. Confirm that both sides report charge and firmware normally before relying on them.

Why DIY battery replacement is risky
AirPods are adhesive-held and not designed for easy battery access. Opening the shell can damage the cell, microphones, speaker, seals or wireless components. iFixit cautions: “AirPods are not designed with repair in mind, so undertake this at your own risk.” A battery kit is therefore a niche option for experienced microsoldering or electronics repairers, not a routine fix. Do not attempt it while a warranty or service option is available.

A kit may cost less than professional service, but the advertised kit price does not account for tools, damaged parts or a failed repair. Because the earbud is sealed and compact, a mistake can make both the battery and the earbud unusable. For most owners, inspection or a matched replacement is the safer comparison.
Prevent the imbalance from returning
- Return both earbuds to the case whenever they are not in use.
- Keep the case charged and avoid repeatedly opening the lid just to check status.
- Alternate sides when listening with one earbud.
- Keep the case and contacts dry; wipe off sweat before storage and never spray cleaner into a bay.
- Leave Optimized Battery Charging enabled when your model supports it.
- Recheck the microphone setting after resets or device changes and leave it on Automatic unless you have a specific reason to force a side.
- Use Spatial Audio, head tracking, Find My Network, Automatic Ear Detection and “Hey Siri” according to your priorities, understanding that disabling them trades features for a possible reduction in background activity.
Optimized Battery Charging is a longevity feature, not an instant repair. Enable it where supported, but continue to verify that both earbuds make a solid charging connection. Store the case and earbuds away from moisture and wipe sweat from the earbuds before putting them away.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my left AirPod dying faster than my right?
The left side may be handling more listening, calls, Siri requests or microphone work, especially if Microphone is fixed to the left. It may also be receiving an incomplete charge because of debris or a case-bay contact. Verify charging, set Microphone to Automatic, alternate one-ear use and test the left earbud by itself.
Why does one AirPod lose battery while the other is fine?
First determine whether the difference repeats under the same session. A one-time mismatch can be a charging-state or display artifact. A repeatable gap can result from unequal use, a fixed microphone assignment, optional features, poor charging contact, liquid damage or a worn cell.
Why is one AirPod not charging in the case?
Inspect and dry-clean the earbud contact and matching bay, reseat the earbud, and charge both earbuds in a powered case for at least 30 seconds. If the case was nearly empty, charge for at least 15 minutes. If the charging problem follows the bay, the case needs inspection; if it follows the earbud, the earbud is more likely at fault.
Should I turn off Spatial Audio or Find My Network?
Use each switch only as a controlled test after charging is verified. Spatial Audio and head tracking can use more power on compatible models, while disabling Find My Network reduces finding capability. Restore a feature if it does not change the measured drain.
Can I replace just one AirPod?
Yes, when the case and other earbud are healthy, but the replacement must match the exact generation and left/right side. Charge the replacement with the original in the case, reset if required, pair the set, and verify normal charging and firmware reporting.
Will resetting AirPods fix fast battery drain?
A reset can clear pairing or settings behavior, but it cannot restore a worn cell or repair liquid damage. Reset after cleaning, charging verification and isolation testing, then repeat the same listening comparison.
How much does an AirPod replacement cost?
There is no single price. Apple service and replacement availability vary by model, generation, warranty or AppleCare status, country and service channel. Get a quote for the exact side and model, and compare it with a reputable matched-earbud seller.
Is an AirPods battery replacement kit worth trying?
Usually only for an experienced electronics repairer. AirPods are adhesive-held and difficult to open without damaging the cell, microphones, speaker, seals or wireless components. Apple service or a matched replacement is safer for most owners.
The Bottom Line
Measure the imbalance, verify that both earbuds actually charge, test each side alone, set Microphone to Automatic and allow a firmware update before resetting. If the same earbud still drains rapidly, compare Apple service with an exact-generation single replacement; do not open the adhesive-sealed earbud unless you accept the risk of permanent damage.
