The comparison depends on which AirPods 4 you mean: standard AirPods 4 has no ANC, while AirPods 4 with ANC is the fairer match for evaluating that feature.

Apple says battery life varies with settings, environment, usage and other factors. AirPods 5 battery testing used preproduction devices and prerelease software in July and August 2026, so treat the listed runtimes as maximums under test conditions rather than guaranteed everyday results.

What changes with AirPods 5?
Noise cancellation: compare the ANC versions
Apple says AirPods 5 removes up to 50% more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified measurement. Standard AirPods 4 has no ANC, so it cannot serve as the direct ANC comparison point.
Battery: the case version matters
AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case is listed for up to five hours of ANC listening per charge and up to 22 hours with its case. That is one additional hour per charge and two additional total hours compared with AirPods 4 with ANC in Apple’s figures. The $129 AirPods 5 configuration is listed for up to four hours per charge and 20 hours with its case, matching AirPods 4 with ANC on those battery measures.

Charging options and resistance
The AirPods 5 Wireless Charging Case can charge with an Apple Watch charger, a Qi-compatible charger, or USB-C. The base AirPods 5 case uses USB-C. Apple lists IP57 resistance for AirPods 5 versus IP54 for AirPods 4; these ratings are not waterproofing guarantees, and Apple says resistance can decrease with normal wear.
Which AirPods model makes sense for you?
- Choose AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case if you want the longer listed ANC runtime, Apple’s stronger ANC claim, and the flexibility to charge wirelessly.
- Consider base AirPods 5 if you want the 2026 generation’s ANC at its lower $129 U.S. listed launch price and do not need the wireless charging case.
- Consider AirPods 4 with ANC if you find it at an attractive current retailer price or do not value AirPods 5’s claimed improvements. A current discount comparison is not established here.
- Consider standard AirPods 4 only if you do not need ANC; it is a different feature proposition from either ANC model.
These recommendations follow Apple’s published specifications, not hands-on testing or independent listening tests.

Shared features and compatibility qualifications
Apple lists the H2 chip, Adaptive Audio, Transparency, Conversation Awareness, and Personalized Spatial Audio across the compared models. Some features require supported devices, software, firmware, or compatible content. Apple also says Live Translation requires compatible Apple devices running the latest operating system software, compatible AirPods firmware, and Apple Intelligence; language and regional availability varies. Siri AI features are described as rolling out in beta with iOS 27 and have additional device and language conditions, so availability is not universal.
