AirPods 5 are easier to open around the earbud batteries than earlier AirPods examined by iFixit, but they are not broadly easy to repair. In its September 29, 2026 teardown, iFixit called them “the most repairable AirPods earbuds ever” and still rated them just 2/10. The buds’ battery access improved; the charging case remained so difficult to open that iFixit destroyed it before reaching its battery.
What improved in the AirPods 5 earbuds
iFixit found pronged batteries in the AirPods 5 earbuds, replacing the tiny soldered leads it encountered in the previous model. It reports that it could open the buds cleanly around the driver, remove glue strips beside each battery, and pop the battery out.

That is a meaningful change in access, not proof that a typical owner can perform a straightforward battery replacement. The teardown required patient prying and careful heat. iFixit said it used commonly available tools, including a clamp and a hair dryer on a low setting, while keeping the heat moving to avoid melting plastic. Its account describes what its teardown team did; it is not a validated consumer repair guide.

The left and right batteries are not interchangeable: iFixit found that their polarity is reversed and their prongs sit slightly differently. When it published the teardown, replacement batteries were not yet available.

Why the charging case remains a repair barrier
The case is where the “most repairable” description stops being reassuring. iFixit reports tight seams and difficulty removing the inner layer even with a rework station. It also found plastic welds where screws could have allowed further disassembly. The case was destroyed before the teardown reached its battery, so the improved access in the earbuds does not extend to the case battery.
At the time of its September 2026 teardown, iFixit said Apple offered no AirPods 5 replacement parts or repair manuals, and that Apple’s Self Service Repair program did not provide a repair path for these buds. Parts, documentation, and service availability can change; that statement reflects the situation reported with the teardown, not a guarantee about later availability.

What iFixit’s 2/10 score means
iFixit rated AirPods 5 2/10 in 2026, its highest score for AirPods at the time. That does not make them highly repairable in general: the improvement is principally that the earbud batteries were more accessible during disassembly, while the case battery remained inaccessible without destroying the case.

For context, iFixit gave Fairbuds a provisional 10/10 in 2024, pending verification of promised repair manuals and replacement-part availability. These scores are iFixit’s assessments from different years, not ratings from a common independent standard. A practical comparison is whether both earbud and case batteries can be reached and replaced, what tools and skill the job takes, and whether parts and manuals are available.

Apple service is an option, not proof of component-level repair
Apple’s AirPods service page says customers can start with troubleshooting or arrange service or replacement. It describes in-person service through Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, as well as mail-in service. Apple says its one-year limited warranty does not cover accidental damage or batteries that wear down through normal use. Final fees follow inspection, and options may vary by location and parts availability. The page does not establish that Apple performs a component-level AirPods 5 battery replacement, so a service or replacement route should not be confused with a repairable design. iFixit’s 2024 Fairbuds article offers a concrete contrast: it describes replaceable batteries in both earbuds and the charging case, limited disassembly for the buds, and a case battery accessed by screws. iFixit also notes limitations and made its 10/10 score provisional pending verification of promised manuals and parts. This is a repairability comparison, not a claim about current price, stock, compatibility, or availability in a particular region. iFixit’s Fairbuds teardown and repairability assessment

iFixit’s AirPods 5 teardown provides evidence about its own disassembly, not typical success rates for home or third-party repairs. It establishes that the earbuds’ battery access improved, but it does not establish that replacement parts are currently available, that Apple offers component-level battery repair, or that an ordinary owner can complete the job reliably. iFixit’s AirPods 5 teardown
