AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) are open-ear earbuds, not sealed in-ear monitors. You get Apple’s vented, tip-free AirPods 4 shape together with ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode, Conversation Awareness, wireless-case charging and Apple’s H2-powered audio features. The trade-off is fundamental: without silicone tips, the earbuds do not create the same physical seal as an in-ear model, so fit, isolation and perceived bass depend more on your individual ear shape and surroundings.
Apple sells standard AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with ANC as separate models. The ANC version adds noise-control and charging-case features while keeping the open-ear design; it is not an AirPods Pro-style silicone-tip fit.

What “without silicone ear tips” means
Silicone ear tips normally sit inside the ear canal and form a seal. That seal can block some outside sound before electronic noise cancellation begins, but it also creates pressure, warmth and a more physically occluded feeling for some listeners. AirPods 4 with ANC take a different approach: the earbuds rest at the entrance of the ear in Apple’s open-ear form, with no interchangeable silicone sleeves.

Apple introduced AirPods 4 as an open-ear design and describes the ANC model as the first AirPods in that design family to add active noise cancellation. The absence of tips is therefore not a missing accessory or an incomplete package; it is the defining fit choice. Apple says advanced modeling used a dataset containing more than 50 million individual ear-shape data points to refine the shape. That is a description of Apple’s design process, not evidence that every ear will receive the same stability, seal or comfort.

What the open fit can change
- Your ear canal is not plugged by silicone, which may feel less pressurized during long listening sessions.
- You can remain more aware of nearby voices, announcements and traffic when you use Transparency mode or leave noise control off.
- There is no tip-size selection or tip replacement to adjust the fit. Stability depends on how the fixed housing sits in your ears.
- Because the design does not seal like a silicone-tip earbud, outside sound and your surroundings remain part of the listening experience even when ANC is active.
Comfort is personal. An open earbud is not automatically more comfortable than an in-ear model, and a silicone-tip earbud is not automatically less comfortable. Your ear anatomy, movement, listening volume and tolerance for an occluded feeling matter more than a universal comfort claim.
What noise control you actually get
ANC is one mode in a broader set of controls. Apple lists four related functions for AirPods 4 with ANC:
Active Noise Cancellation
ANC uses microphones and signal processing to reduce selected environmental sounds. Apple specifically cites sounds such as airplane engines and city traffic. Those are vendor descriptions, not independent measurements, and ANC should not be interpreted as removing every external sound. The open-ear fit also means the earbud is not relying on a tight physical seal before electronic cancellation starts.
Adaptive Audio
Adaptive Audio combines noise-control behavior so the listening experience can respond to changing surroundings. It is intended for situations in which you move between louder and quieter places rather than choosing a permanently isolated or permanently open setting.
Transparency mode
Transparency mode deliberately passes environmental sound through the earbuds. It is the useful choice when you need to hear people, announcements or ambient activity without removing the earbuds.

Conversation Awareness
Conversation Awareness is designed to react when you begin speaking, adjusting the listening experience so a conversation is easier without manually removing the earbuds. Apple lists it as part of the ANC model’s noise-control feature set.
These modes address different needs. ANC is for reducing selected background noise, Transparency is for deliberately hearing your surroundings, and Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness are situational automations. None changes the underlying fact that the earbuds remain open-ear.
Battery life: the ANC penalty is real
Apple’s technical specifications estimate up to four hours of listening on one charge with ANC enabled and up to five hours with noise control off. Using the charging case, Apple estimates up to 20 hours with ANC enabled and up to 30 hours with noise control off.
Apple says those figures came from testing conducted in July and August 2024 with pre-production AirPods 4 with ANC, pre-production iPhone 16 Pro Max units and pre-release software. Actual battery life varies with settings, environment, usage and other factors. “Up to” is an estimate under Apple’s test conditions, not a guaranteed runtime for every call, volume level or feature combination.

If you intend to keep ANC enabled for an entire workday, plan around the four-hour single-charge estimate rather than the five-hour noise-control-off figure. The case provides the additional listening cycles, but your real total will depend on how often you remove and recharge the earbuds and whether you use calls or other power-intensive features.

Charging case options
The ANC model’s case supports three charging methods: a USB-C connection, an Apple Watch charger or a Qi-certified wireless charger. Apple lists the USB-C charge cable as sold separately, so the earbuds and case do not necessarily include the cable you need for wired charging.

The case also includes a speaker for Find My alerts. Apple’s launch announcement says the case is more than 10 percent smaller in volume than its predecessor; that is Apple’s comparison claim, and the announcement does not establish a broader size or capacity comparison beyond that statement.
Hardware and specifications
AirPods 4 with ANC use Apple’s H2 headphone chip, a custom high-excursion driver and a high-dynamic-range amplifier. The microphone and sensing system includes dual beamforming microphones, an inward-facing microphone, an optical in-ear sensor, motion- and speech-detecting accelerometers and a force sensor.

IP54 is a resistance rating, not a waterproof designation. It does not make the earbuds suitable for submersion, swimming or deliberate exposure to large amounts of water. Apple’s specifications establish the rating; they do not turn it into a promise that every earbud will survive every wet or dusty situation.
Controls, calls and spatial audio
Stem presses control playback and calls, while pressing and holding performs the configured Siri action. Apple also lists Siri Interactions, which allow head gestures for certain prompted responses. These controls let you manage common actions without reaching for a phone, but the exact response depends on the prompt and the device software supporting the feature.

For calls, the dual beamforming microphones and inward-facing microphone work with Apple’s computational audio features. Apple lists Voice Isolation among the ANC model’s capabilities. The available hardware also includes motion- and speech-detecting accelerometers, which support motion-aware and voice-related functions.
Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking is included, as is Adaptive EQ. Spatial Audio changes how compatible content is presented around you, while dynamic head tracking adjusts the perceived position as you move your head. Adaptive EQ is intended to adjust the sound balance for the fit and playback conditions. These are processing features; they do not create a silicone seal or physically isolate the ear.
Open-ear AirPods 4 ANC versus silicone-tip earbuds
The most important comparison is physical, not a checklist of extra features. A silicone-tip in-ear earbud uses a replaceable tip to seal the canal. AirPods 4 with ANC use a fixed open-ear housing. Apple identifies AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro as separate product models, so choosing AirPods 4 with ANC means choosing the open-ear approach rather than the Pro-style tip system.
Choose the open-ear approach when
- You dislike the plugged or pressurized sensation of silicone tips.
- You want the option to hear your surroundings through Transparency mode or with noise control disabled.
- You prefer a fixed design and do not want to manage tip sizes.
- You value Apple’s ANC and spatial-audio features but specifically want an open-ear fit.
Think carefully before choosing it when
- You need a strong passive seal for very loud environments.
- You rely on a tip to keep earbuds secure during vigorous movement.
- You expect ANC performance to match a sealed in-ear design in every setting.
- Your ears have previously rejected fixed-shape open earbuds because they loosen or create pressure points.
Official Apple materials establish the design and feature claims, but they do not provide independent comparative measurements of ANC reduction, bass response, leak-through or fit success against silicone-tip earbuds. Those outcomes can vary substantially by ear shape and listening environment.
How to decide if the ANC model fits your routine
For commuting and travel
ANC is intended to reduce recurring environmental sounds such as traffic and aircraft noise, according to Apple. The four-hour single-charge estimate with ANC enabled is the relevant figure for a flight segment or commute; the case extends the total to Apple’s estimated 20 hours.

For offices and shared spaces
Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode and Conversation Awareness give you alternatives to leaving full ANC on all day. If you frequently move between focused work and brief conversations, those modes may be more useful than treating ANC as a single permanent setting.
For awareness outdoors
Transparency mode and the open-ear construction can help you remain aware of nearby activity. Awareness is not a substitute for attention around traffic, bicycles or other hazards; the earbuds still play audio, and your ability to hear a sound does not guarantee that you will notice or correctly identify it.
For exercise and weather exposure
The listed IP54 rating covers dust and resistance to sweat and water splashes under the rating’s conditions. It is not a waterproof claim. Avoid treating the earbuds as suitable for swimming or immersion, and follow Apple’s care guidance for wet equipment.
What is in the box and what is not established
The product itself is Apple AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation and its charging case. The case can charge by USB-C, Apple Watch charger or Qi-certified charger. Apple explicitly lists the USB-C charge cable as sold separately. Current retail price, inventory, promotional terms and any particular seller’s bundle are not established here, so confirm those details at the time of purchase.
Likewise, there is no independent fit survey or laboratory comparison in the official material described above. Treat Apple’s more-than-50-million-data-point design statement, ANC examples and battery figures as Apple claims and estimates, not as a guarantee of your personal result.
Bottom line for a tip-free ANC buyer
AirPods 4 with ANC give you a rare combination: an open-ear AirPods shape with active noise cancellation, Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking and a case that supports USB-C, Apple Watch and Qi charging. You give up the physical seal and adjustable tip system of silicone in-ear earbuds. The right choice depends on whether that open fit is your priority and whether Apple’s four-hour ANC and 20-hour case estimates suit your routine.
