Both use an open-ear design and share core features such as Voice Isolation, Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, and Adaptive EQ. The ANC version adds Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, wireless case charging, Apple Watch charging, and a case speaker for Find My. Standard AirPods 4 starts with the lower historical U.S. launch price and avoids the ANC model’s shorter battery estimate when noise control is enabled.
AirPods 4 vs. AirPods 4 with ANC at a glance
The two earbuds have the same basic generation and open-ear shape, but they are not simply the same product with a software switch. The ANC model includes additional listening modes and a different charging case. This table separates the documented differences from the features Apple lists for both.

Active Noise Cancellation
Active Noise Cancellation is the headline upgrade. It is intended to reduce outside sound while you listen, which can make music, podcasts, and calls easier to follow in places such as public transport or a busy office. The mode is only on the ANC model; standard AirPods 4 does not offer it.
#1 Best Overall
- REBUILT FOR COMFORT — AirPods 4 have been redesigned for exceptional all-day comfort and greater stability. With a refined contour, shorter stem, and quick-press controls for music or calls.
- ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation help reduce outside noise before it reaches your ears, so you can immerse yourself in what you’re listening to.*
- HEAR THE WORLD AROUND YOU — The powerful H2 chip comes to AirPods 4. Adaptive Audio seamlessly blends ANC and Transparency mode — which lets you comfortably hear and interact with the world around you exactly as it sounds — to provide the best listening experience in any environment.* And when you’re speaking with someone nearby, Conversation Awareness automatically lowers the volume of what’s playing.*
- IMPROVED SOUND AND CALL QUALITY — Voice Isolation improves the quality of calls in loud conditions. Using advanced computational audio, it reduces background noise while isolating and clarifying the sound of your voice for whomever you’re speaking to.*
- MAGICAL EXPERIENCE — Just say “Siri” or “Hey Siri” to play a song, make a call, or check your schedule.* And with Siri Interactions, now you can respond to Siri by simply nodding your head yes or shaking your head no.* Pair AirPods 4 by simply placing them near your device and tapping Connect on your screen.* Easily share a song or show between two sets of AirPods.* An optical in-ear sensor knows to play audio only when you’re wearing AirPods and pauses when you take them off. And you can track down your AirPods and Charging Case with the Find My app.*
Transparency
Transparency is the opposite listening approach: instead of trying to block the environment, it lets you remain aware of surrounding sound without removing the earbuds. That is useful when you need to hear an announcement or speak to someone but do not want to take the earbuds out.
Adaptive Audio
Adaptive Audio is another ANC-model mode listed by Apple. It combines noise-control behavior with awareness of the environment, giving you an option between full cancellation and full transparency rather than requiring a completely manual choice each time your surroundings change.
Conversation Awareness
Conversation Awareness is also exclusive to the ANC version. Its purpose is to make switching from listening to a nearby conversation less disruptive. If you frequently move between private listening and short interactions, this feature may matter more than the headline ANC specification.
Apple’s specifications identify the four additions as ANC, Transparency, Adaptive Audio, and Conversation Awareness. The independent MacRumors buyer guide and RTINGS comparison also identify these listening-mode and case differences: MacRumors comparison and RTINGS comparison.
What both models have in common
Choosing standard AirPods 4 does not mean giving up the basic features Apple lists for this generation. Both models include:
- Voice Isolation
- Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking
- Adaptive EQ
- An open-ear fit rather than a silicone-sealed ear tip
- IP54 dust, sweat, and water resistance under Apple’s stated laboratory conditions
These shared features make the standard model a complete option for someone who listens mostly in quiet rooms and does not need the ANC-specific modes. The extra price is buying a different set of listening and case capabilities, not a separate generation of basic audio hardware.

The charging cases are a bigger difference than they first appear
Standard AirPods 4 case
Apple lists USB-C charging for the standard case. The specification lists Find My support, but it does not list a speaker in the case. If you already charge devices with a cable and normally know where you leave your earbuds, this simpler case may be all you need.
AirPods 4 with ANC case
The ANC case supports USB-C, Qi-certified wireless charging, and charging from an Apple Watch charger. It also has a speaker that helps with Find My locating. Those additions can be useful if your desk or bedside setup already uses a Qi pad or Apple Watch charging puck, because you can place the case down without connecting a cable.
Apple says Find My functionality requires iOS 18 or later. The operating-system requirement applies to the locating features; it does not turn the standard case into a speaker-equipped case. Check Apple’s model specifications for the exact case and compatibility details: AirPods 4 with ANC specifications and AirPods 4 specifications.
Battery life: compare the conditions, not just the headline number
Apple’s estimates favor standard AirPods 4 in the simplest comparison, but the figures depend on whether noise control is active.
| Battery measurement | AirPods 4 | AirPods 4 with ANC |
|---|---|---|
| Listening time from the earbuds | Up to 5 hours per charge | Up to 4 hours per charge with ANC enabled; up to 5 hours with noise control off |
| Total listening time using the case | Up to 30 hours | Up to 20 hours with ANC enabled; up to 30 hours with noise control off |
In practical terms, the ANC model’s maximum is not always lower. With noise control turned off, Apple quotes the same five-hour earbud and 30-hour case totals as standard AirPods 4. Turning ANC on changes the quoted figures to four hours per charge and 20 hours including the case. That makes the choice partly a question of how often you expect to use ANC, not simply whether the ANC model has a smaller battery.

The complete test qualifications appear in Apple’s ANC specifications and standard specifications.

Fit and isolation: ANC does not make these in-ear earbuds
Both AirPods 4 versions have an open-ear fit. The ANC model can reduce outside sound electronically, but it does not create the physical seal provided by an ear tip that sits in the ear canal. That distinction matters in a plane cabin, on a loud train, or anywhere you need the strongest possible isolation.
MacRumors notes that the silicone-tip in-ear design of AirPods Pro provides more effective isolation than the open-ear AirPods 4 with ANC. If you need a secure sealed fit for exercise, maximum passive isolation, or the quietest possible commute, compare an in-ear model rather than assuming the ANC AirPods 4 will perform like one. The ANC version is better understood as an open-ear earbud with electronic noise control, not as a replacement for every sealed design.
Open-ear fit can still be an advantage. Some listeners dislike the pressure or plugged feeling of silicone tips, and an open design allows more natural awareness of the surroundings. Your ear shape determines how stable and comfortable either AirPods 4 model feels, so the ANC feature should not be the only fit decision.
Durability and water resistance
Apple gives both models an IP54 rating. Apple describes this as dust, sweat, and water resistance based on controlled laboratory testing for non-water sports and exercise. It is not a waterproof rating.
- Use the rating as protection for sweat and incidental splashes, not permission to submerge the earbuds or case.
- Do not use either model for swimming or other water activities.
- Resistance can decline with normal wear, so an older pair may not protect against moisture as well as a new pair.
The identical rating means durability does not provide a reason to pay for the ANC version. Decide on the listening modes and case features instead.
Price and value: the $50 launch gap
Apple’s September 9, 2024 U.S. announcement set the launch prices at $129 for AirPods 4 and $179 for AirPods 4 with ANC, a $50 difference at launch. Apple stated that both became available on September 20, 2024. Retail prices can change after launch, and no current retailer price is established here, so use those numbers only to understand the original positioning.

If you mostly listen at home, work in a quiet room, charge by USB-C, and do not care about a case speaker, standard AirPods 4 retains the core listening features while avoiding the premium and the lower ANC-on battery estimate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which model fits common day-to-day situations?
Quiet home and office listening
Standard AirPods 4 is the straightforward choice when background noise is limited. Its quoted five-hour earbud and 30-hour case estimates are available without managing noise-control modes, and the lower launch price leaves you paying only for features you will actually use.
Public transport and air travel
AirPods 4 with ANC is the more suitable of these two models because it can reduce environmental noise. Remember that its open-ear construction does not isolate as strongly as a silicone-tip in-ear model, so frequent flyers or commuters who prioritize maximum quiet should also consider an in-ear alternative.
Walking, errands, and quick conversations
The ANC model’s Transparency, Adaptive Audio, and Conversation Awareness options are relevant when your surroundings change repeatedly. Standard AirPods 4 can still be used in these situations, but it does not include those four ANC-model modes.

Wireless charging setups
If you already keep a Qi charger or Apple Watch charger on your desk, the ANC case can reduce cable swapping. Standard AirPods 4 is the better match for a USB-C-only routine.

Misplacing the case
Both specifications list Find My support, but only the ANC case is documented with a speaker. That audible locating aid can be a meaningful convenience if your case often disappears in a room or bag. Find My functionality requires iOS 18 or later.
A practical decision checklist
Use these questions in order rather than treating ANC as an automatic upgrade:
- Will you regularly listen around engines, crowds, or office noise? If yes, the ANC model’s Active Noise Cancellation is the main reason to choose it.
- Do you need to switch quickly between listening and awareness? If yes, Transparency, Adaptive Audio, and Conversation Awareness are exclusive reasons to choose the ANC version.
- Do you use Qi or Apple Watch charging? If yes, the ANC case supports those methods; standard AirPods 4 is listed with USB-C charging.
- Would a case speaker help you find it? If yes, choose the ANC case, which Apple documents with a speaker for Find My.
- Do you mainly listen in quiet places and want the lowest launch price? Standard AirPods 4 covers the shared core features and has the simpler value proposition.
- Do you need a sealed fit or the strongest isolation? Neither AirPods 4 model is sealed. Compare AirPods Pro or another in-ear design instead.
What the specifications do—and do not—prove
The battery figures are controlled estimates, not a promise that every listener will reach the stated hours. Volume, environmental conditions, connection behavior, and the selected listening mode all affect endurance. In particular, comparing “up to five hours” for standard AirPods 4 with “up to four hours” for the ANC model is incomplete unless you also state whether ANC is enabled.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The IP54 rating is similarly conditional. It comes from controlled laboratory testing and is not permanent. Sweat and splash resistance should be treated as a protective margin, not as waterproofing.
The launch prices establish how Apple positioned the models in September 2024, but they do not tell you what a retailer charges now. Check the seller and region at the time you buy rather than assuming the original $50 gap still applies.
Bottom line for the upgrade decision
Choose AirPods 4 when your priorities are the lower original price, the shared Apple features, open-ear comfort, and the quoted five-hour/30-hour battery figures without relying on noise control. Choose AirPods 4 with ANC when you will use Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency, Adaptive Audio, or Conversation Awareness—or when Qi and Apple Watch charging and a speaker-equipped Find My case justify the extra cost.
Do not buy the ANC version expecting a sealed in-ear experience. Both models remain open-ear earbuds, and the ANC model’s noise reduction does not change that physical fit. For maximum isolation, evaluate an in-ear option separately.
