Start with the airline’s current pet policy, then compare its requirements with the carrier’s outer dimensions and your dog’s ability to rest and move inside it.
What “airline approved” actually means
There is no single carrier size or product approved for every airline and aircraft. The FAA leaves the decision to allow pets in the passenger cabin to each airline. When an airline permits a cabin pet, its container counts as carry-on baggage and must fit beneath the seat without blocking a path to the main aisle. Airlines may also set rules for carrier construction, ventilation, leak resistance, pet size or weight, seating, behavior, health documents, and international travel paperwork. How to choose a carrier for your flight

Check the operating airline’s current policy
Use the airline that operates each flight, especially when an itinerary includes a partner airline or connection. Confirm whether cabin pets are allowed, whether your dog qualifies, what carrier construction and dimensions are permitted, how to add the pet to the reservation, and whether advance arrangements or documents are required. Policies can change, so verify them close to departure.

Check the aircraft and seat’s under-seat space
Look for guidance specific to your aircraft or seat when available. A carrier’s listed dimensions are not enough if it cannot fit beneath your assigned seat without excessive compression or blocking the aisle. Delta says kennel maximums depend on the aircraft because under-seat space varies. Delta’s pet travel policy

Measure the carrier and the dog
Compare the carrier’s outside dimensions with the airline’s limit and the actual under-seat space. Then check the usable interior: your dog should have enough room to rest and change position naturally. Frontier, for example, says its carrier must allow the pet to stand, turn around, and lie down naturally. Frontier’s pet policy

Confirm the reservation and travel details
Ask the airline to confirm that the pet is added to each relevant flight and that the carrier meets its requirements. Check any seat restrictions, check-in instructions, and applicable health or international travel documents.

Why airline carrier limits differ
Published dimensions are airline-specific examples, not industry-wide standards. Frontier lists a maximum soft-sided carrier size of 18 × 14 × 11 inches. Avianca publishes in-cabin dimensions of 22 × 14 × 10 inches and says the pet must stand and turn comfortably without touching the carrier’s ceiling or walls. Those figures apply to their respective policies; they do not establish what another airline or aircraft will accept.

Construction rules can differ too. Delta specifies a leak-proof soft-sided kennel and ventilation openings on three sides for domestic travel and four sides for international travel. American recommends soft-sided collapsible kennels and says a kennel may be slightly larger if it fits under the seat without excessive collapse. Check the exact rule for your trip rather than assuming one carrier design satisfies every airline.

Sleepypod Air
Sleepypod lists the Air’s exterior dimensions as 16–22 × 10.5 × 10.5 inches and recommends it for pets up to 18 pounds. The manufacturer says it compresses to suit a range of under-seat spaces and has ventilation on four sides. Sleepypod also says the carrier was independently crash-tested and certified with a top safety rating by the Center for Pet Safety for pets within the stated weight limit. Those are manufacturer claims about the product and its crash testing; they do not guarantee an airline will accept it or that it will fit beneath a particular seat. Sleepypod Air product details

What to check before you buy
- Airline and aircraft fit: Compare the listed outside dimensions and compression with the operating airline’s limit and your flight’s under-seat space.
- Dog fit: Make sure your dog can rest and change position comfortably inside the carrier; do not rely on the outer dimensions alone.
- Construction: Check required materials, ventilation, leak resistance, closures, and any airline-specific rules.
- Handling: Consider how you will carry and access the carrier, and whether its bedding can be removed or cleaned when the product information supports those features.
- Safety claims: Identify who tested or certified the carrier, what the test covered, and any pet-weight limit. A car-crash test is not an airline-approval test.
Common reasons a carrier may not work
- It is marketed as airline approved, but the airline rejects it: Product wording does not override the operating airline’s rules.
- It fits the published dimensions but not the seat: Under-seat clearance depends on aircraft and seat configuration.
- It fits under the seat only when compressed excessively: American advises against excessive collapse; the carrier must also remain suitable for the dog.
- The dog cannot move comfortably inside: Recheck usable interior space and the airline’s requirements for standing, turning, and lying down.
- The carrier meets one airline’s rule but not another’s: Check each operating carrier on a multi-airline itinerary, including connections.
