That sends the original file, edit history and metadata. Google Photos can retain the camera file’s resolution when its backup quality is set to Original quality, but backup storage and the way a shared copy is downloaded are separate issues. Messaging apps are convenient but commonly compress pictures; use an HD option or, when available, send the image as a file/document and verify the received copy if exact fidelity matters.
The decision in one view
Choose the workflow based on what you are actually doing: transferring a file, storing a backup, or sharing access to a picture. Those operations can produce different results even when they start with the same photograph.

If a client, editor or archive needs the exact camera file, use AirDrop with All Photos Data, a cloud workflow explicitly configured for Original quality, or a file/document transfer. If the goal is simply to show a photo in a chat, an app’s standard attachment is usually adequate.
Sending, backing up and sharing are not the same thing
Sending a file
A send operation creates a copy on another device. AirDrop is the clearest example: the sender selects an item and delivers it directly to a nearby Apple device. The recipient can then inspect the resulting file independently of the sender’s library.

Backing up a library
A backup setting controls how the service stores the account’s copy. In Google Photos, Original quality and Storage saver determine how backed-up content is retained. That choice does not, by itself, define how every album link, conversation attachment or download will be delivered.
Sharing a view or link
An album, conversation or link can let someone view content without handing over the same file that sits in the owner’s library. A recipient who saves an item receives a copy; later edits to the original do not update copies already saved by recipients. Treat a shared link as access to content, not as proof of an untouched file.
Does AirDrop reduce photo quality?
AirDrop is the strongest default for a nearby Apple-to-Apple transfer when file fidelity matters. In the iPhone Photos app, Apple documents an All Photos Data option that sends the original file with its edit history and metadata; Apple identifies this full-data option as available with AirDrop.
How to send the original from iPhone Photos
- Open Photos and select one or more pictures or videos.
- Tap Share, then tap Options at the top of the share sheet.
- Turn on All Photos Data. This is the control that tells Photos to include the original file, edit history and metadata.
- Review the format-related choice shown in Options when it is relevant to the recipient. A recipient or application that does not support the source format may convert it or show a different representation.
- Tap AirDrop and choose the nearby Apple device. The recipient must accept the transfer.
Without All Photos Data, the share sheet can use a more limited rendition or omit some information. The visible picture may still look sharp, but visual sharpness alone does not prove that the original file, edit history and metadata were retained.
What metadata can travel?
Apple’s sharing controls can include details such as the date, time, location, device and captions. All Photos Data adds the original file and edit history for the AirDrop transfer. If a picture contains a home location, a client’s location or other sensitive information, inspect the metadata choices before sending rather than assuming a quality-preserving transfer is privacy-neutral.

AirDrop limitations
- AirDrop is designed for nearby Apple devices, not a general cross-platform delivery service.
- A destination application can convert a format after receipt. An original HEIF, RAW file or Live Photo may not remain represented identically inside every non-Apple app.
- Apple notes that an unsupported destination can receive a Live Photo as a still image.
- Attachment limits are determined by the service provider when AirDrop is used as part of another sharing route; Apple does not state one universal size limit.
For a quick handoff between an iPhone, iPad or Mac, AirDrop with All Photos Data is the least ambiguous path. It still makes sense to check the received file when the transfer is part of a professional workflow.
Does Google Photos compress photos when you share them?
Google Photos has two separate quality questions: how the service stores the backup and how a particular recipient obtains a shared copy.

Original quality versus Storage saver
Set Google Photos backup quality to Original quality when preserving the camera’s taken resolution in the cloud is the priority. Google Photos Help describes this setting by saying that photos and videos are stored “in the same resolution that you took them in with no change to their quality.” That statement applies to items backed up with Original quality.
Storage saver is different. Google says it may compress photos, resize photos above 16 megapixels to 16 megapixels, and resize video above 1080p to 1080p. A file that has already been reduced in the backup cannot regain the discarded pixels by changing the setting later.
How to choose the backup setting
- Open Google Photos and tap your account picture or initials.
- Open Photos settings, then Backup.
- Open Backup quality (the exact label can vary by app version).
- Select Original quality if retaining the taken resolution is more important than conserving account storage.
- Check the account’s remaining storage before starting a large upload. Google lists up to 15 GB of account storage, and Original-quality backups count toward that allowance.
Original quality preserves the stored backup; it does not promise unlimited space or guarantee that a recipient’s device will display the same format.

Sharing from Google Photos
Google Photos can share through albums, conversations and links. Those tools are useful when several people need access across different devices, but the sharing mechanism should not be conflated with the backup setting. A link may present a view, and a saved item is a recipient-side copy. The service’s general sharing instructions do not establish a universal original-resolution guarantee for every link, conversation or download route.
When exact fidelity matters, tell the recipient how to obtain the file and ask them to inspect the downloaded copy. If the account’s backup was made with Storage saver, the source available for sharing may already be resized. If the source is Original quality, the recipient’s download or destination application can still convert formats or strip metadata.
Google Photos trade-offs
- Strength: cloud access, albums and links work across device ecosystems and are convenient for groups.
- Cost constraint: the listed 15 GB account allowance is shared within the account, and Original-quality media uses that storage.
- Fidelity constraint: backup quality and shared-copy behavior are different decisions.
- Editing constraint: a copy saved by someone else does not receive later edits made to the original library item.
Does WhatsApp lower picture quality?
Messaging apps optimize for fast delivery and manageable data use, so a normal photo attachment may be compressed. WhatsApp documents an HD option and a media-upload-quality setting, while also warning that shared media is usually compressed and may be lower quality. HD is therefore an improvement over the default path, not a promise that the transmission is identical to the camera file.
Use the highest-quality route the app offers
- Update the messaging app and confirm that both sender and recipient are using a current version.
- In the chat’s media or storage settings, choose the highest available upload-quality option.
- When the composer offers an HD choice, select it before sending.
- If the image must remain an inspectable file, choose Document or File instead of the normal photo-gallery attachment, if that option exists.
- Send one test image first and inspect the received dimensions, file size, format and metadata before sending a large batch.
Menus and limits vary by platform and app version. Do not assume that an HD toggle in one app behaves like an HD toggle in another.
Why file/document sending can be better
A file or document route avoids the application’s normal image-rendering pipeline in many implementations, giving you a better chance of preserving the source file. It is not a universal guarantee: the app, operating system and recipient’s save action can still alter the result. On iPhone, the documented limit for sending a document can be up to 2 GB in the cited help guidance; verify the current limit and the recipient’s available storage before relying on it.

File sending also changes convenience. The recipient may need to download and open the item manually, thumbnails may be missing, and group members may not see an inline preview. That trade-off is worthwhile for RAW files, edited masters, legal evidence or any image where dimensions and metadata matter more than immediate viewing.

How to send photos without losing quality
Step 1: Define “quality”
Decide whether you need the same pixels, the same file format, the same metadata, the same edit history or simply a sharp-looking preview. These are different requirements. A JPEG preview can look perfect while lacking a RAW original, location data or non-destructive edits.
Step 2: Pick the route
- Choose AirDrop for a nearby Apple recipient and enable All Photos Data.
- Choose Google Photos Original quality when you need a cloud-backed library and cross-device access.
- Choose a messaging app’s HD mode for a better in-chat image when a small amount of processing is acceptable.
- Choose File/Document sending when the recipient needs the actual file and the app supports it.
Step 3: Protect privacy before sending
Review location, date, device and caption metadata in the share options. Removing metadata can protect privacy but may conflict with an archival or professional requirement. Make that choice deliberately instead of treating metadata loss as an invisible side effect.
Step 4: Verify the received copy
- Compare pixel dimensions with the source.
- Compare file size and extension; a dramatic reduction can indicate compression, though file size alone is not proof.
- Open the file’s information panel and check capture date, location and other metadata that should have survived.
- For edited media, check whether the recipient received the original, a flattened export or only a rendered preview.
- Ask the recipient to save the file locally before the link or message expires.
Verification is the only reliable way to catch a format conversion or app-specific behavior that the sender’s screen does not reveal.
Troubleshooting common quality problems
The AirDrop result is a still image instead of a Live Photo
The destination may not support Live Photos. Apple notes that an unsupported destination can receive a still image. Repeat the transfer to a compatible Apple device or export a deliberate video/still version when that is the intended result.
The Google Photos download is smaller than expected
Check whether the item was backed up with Storage saver, then check how the recipient downloaded it. A shared link or saved copy is not the same operation as the account’s backup. If the source was already resized, request the original from the device or another uncompressed file route.
A WhatsApp image says HD but still is not the original
HD addresses the app’s higher-quality media path; it does not establish byte-for-byte identity. Send the item as a document/file instead, then compare dimensions, extension and metadata on the recipient’s device.
The recipient cannot open the file
The transfer may have preserved a format that the recipient’s viewer does not support. Provide a compatible viewing export separately, while retaining the original file for editing or archiving. Do not overwrite the original merely to make one viewer happy.
Metadata disappeared
Review the sender’s sharing options and the app’s attachment mode. Some services intentionally strip location or other metadata. If the metadata is essential, use a route that preserves it and verify the result before deleting the source.
Which option should you choose?
For a photographer handing an original to another Apple user nearby, use AirDrop and turn on All Photos Data. For a household or team that needs a searchable cloud library and links on multiple device types, use Google Photos with Original quality and explain that each recipient’s download is a separate step. For a casual chat, use the messaging app’s HD control; for paid work, evidence, RAW files or archival copies, switch to file/document sending or a dedicated original-file transfer instead of relying on an inline image.
The central rule is simple: an “original” label is not enough. Check which operation took place, which setting was active, what the recipient actually downloaded and whether the destination converted the format or removed metadata.
