There is no single airbrush cleaner that is best for every artist or model painter. The right choice depends on the paint or medium you spray, the cleaning job you need to do, and the instructions from both your airbrush maker and your paint maker. Among the cleaners documented by their manufacturers, Iwata-Medea Airbrush Cleaner is a ready-to-use general-purpose option that lists water-based and acrylic paints among the media it works with. Createx 5618 and Vallejo Airbrush Cleaner are named alternatives for readers already using those paint lines. Independent head-to-head testing of these products was not found, so this guide does not rank them by performance.

Why no cleaner is universally “best”

A cleaner has to dissolve or lift the specific paint you spray, and it has to be compatible with the seals, needles and passages inside your airbrush. Paint systems differ in chemistry, so a product that works well on one acrylic line may be a poor fit for another. Iwata’s cleaning guidance says to choose the cleaner based on the material you are spraying, and to contact the material’s maker if you are unsure which cleaner to use. That advice is the most reliable starting point, and it is why this article compares cleaners by use case rather than by a single ranking.

Compare cleaners by what you spray

The table below lists the three cleaners named in the manufacturer material reviewed for this article. The “What the maker states” column reports manufacturer claims only.

Cleaner What the maker states Fits best when Check before use
Iwata-Medea Airbrush Cleaner Ready-to-use general-purpose cleaner; Iwata’s product page lists water-based and acrylic paints among the media it is effective with. You spray water-based or acrylic paints and want one cleaner for routine flushing and parts soaking. Confirm that your exact paint line is compatible with the paint maker’s own guidance.
Createx 5618 Airbrush Cleaner Listed by Createx with associated technical and safety documentation. A Createx Germany shop listing gives the 240 ml size as item 5618-08. You already use Createx paints and want the cleaner from the same line. Read the current technical and safety documents for your region before use.
Vallejo Airbrush Cleaner (references 71.099 and 71.199) Vallejo’s safety information identifies these references, and its catalogue lists Vallejo Airbrush Cleaner. You use Vallejo paints and prefer that brand’s cleaner. Confirm the current regional instructions and compatibility with your paints.

When comparing any of these products, use three checks: the paint or medium chemistry and the paint maker’s cleaning recommendation; the cleaning task you need to perform; and the airbrush maker’s construction and care instructions. Avoid choosing by “strength” or “value” unless you have seen comparative data for your own paints.

Match the cleaner to the cleaning task

Iwata’s guidance separates routine cleaning from deeper cleaning, and the two call for different effort.

Quick flush between colors and at the end of a session

For routine work, the goal is to clear the paint passages so the next color starts clean. Iwata says to flush cleaner or water through the airbrush until it sprays clear, both between colors and at the end of a session. A flush is usually enough when you are switching between compatible colors.

  • Ready-to-use, general purpose cleaner for any airbrush or artist tool.
  • Effective with water-based, acrylic and oil-based paints and makeups, inks, dyes, watercolors and gouache.

  • Use to flush paint out of your airbrush in-between colors and at the end of a session.
  • Use to deep clean and soak parts.

Deep cleaning for clogs or uneven spray

If the airbrush is clogged or sprays unevenly, a flush may not be enough. Iwata describes a separate deeper-clean procedure for this case. It focuses on paint-contact areas and asks you to handle the needle and nozzle carefully, because those parts are delicate and easily bent or damaged.

Cleaning routine, step by step

The routine below follows the manufacturer’s structure. Adapt it to your airbrush model and check the manual that came with it.

Rank #3
Vallejo - Airbrush Cleaner for Acrylic Paints 200 ml. (6.76 fl.oz.)
  • Airbrush cleaner is ideal for cleaning your airbrush ensuring a thorough cleaning with perfect cleaning elements, specifically created for this purpose. Its high quality components ensure safe and effective cleaning
  • Airbrush cleaner removes all the paint, plus lubricates the mechanism of the airbrush without causing damage. For more thorough cleaning, soak valve and nozzle (not the whole airbrush) for several hours
  • The new r-PET (recycled/recyclable) plastic container is available in two different formats: 85 ml (2.87 fl.oz.) and 200 ml (6.76 fl.oz.)
  • Note: The brand Vallejo is currently in the process of rebranding, therefore, for a period of time, it is possible that you may receive the product with either the new packaging or the old packaging
  1. Empty the cup. Pour out excess paint and wipe the cup as needed before adding cleaner.
  2. Flush between colors. Spray cleaner or water through the airbrush until it sprays clear. Direct the spray into a spray-out pot or onto a paper towel, not onto your artwork or model.
  3. Flush at the end of the session. Repeat the flush until the spray is clear. Then follow the maker’s steps for cleaning the needle and paint-contact passages as needed.
  4. Soak removable parts only if paint has dried on them. Iwata says to soak the specified removable nozzle and cap parts in Medea cleaner or a suitable solvent for no more than 10 minutes to loosen paint, then brush them clean. Never soak the whole airbrush.
  5. Clean the passages with a brush or pipe cleaner. Small cleaning brushes or pipe cleaners help clear the fluid passages. Iwata’s FAQ also recommends a spray-out pot for containing the spray during cleaning.
  6. Empty the cup before storage. Do not leave cleaning agents in the fluid cup while the airbrush is stored.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Soaking the entire airbrush. Iwata’s official cleaning guide states: “NEVER soak your entire airbrush in any liquid.”
  • Soaking parts longer than necessary. The manufacturer limit for removable nozzle and cap parts is 10 minutes.
  • Storing with cleaner in the cup. Leftover cleaner can stay in the cup and affect the next session.
  • Choosing a cleaner without checking the paint. If you are unsure what your paint needs, contact the paint maker before choosing a cleaner.
  • Forcing a clog. Use the deeper-clean procedure rather than pushing hard on the needle or nozzle.

Recommended approach

Start by identifying the paint system you spray. Use a cleaner the paint maker or airbrush maker supports for that system, follow the flush and soak steps above, and keep cleaning accessories on hand so that you can handle clogs without improvising. If your paint line is not covered by any of the named products, the paint maker’s guidance is the authority to follow.
