The most effective home strategy is layered, not either-or: reduce pollution at its source, ventilate with clean outdoor air when conditions allow, and use filtration when outdoor air is polluted or indoor sources cannot be eliminated. A portable purifier cleans one room or area; a compatible central HVAC filter can clean air that passes through the system. Neither removes every pollutant.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) summarizes the priority this way: “The most effective ways to improve your indoor air are to reduce or remove the sources of pollutants and to ventilate with clean outdoor air.” Filtration is a useful supplement, and it becomes especially important during wildfire smoke or other outdoor pollution episodes. See the EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home.

What works at home, in the right order

Start by identifying what is polluting the air. Cooking, candles, smoking, fireplaces, cleaning products, attached garages, damp materials and outdoor smoke require different responses. Stop or isolate the source whenever possible. If outdoor air is clean, opening windows or running outdoor-air ventilation dilutes indoor pollutants. If outdoor air is smoky or otherwise unhealthy, opening windows can make indoor air worse; keep the building closed and filter the air instead.

About 90% of people’s time is spent indoors, according to the EPA’s second-edition Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home. That figure is context rather than a precise value for every household, but it explains why indoor exposure and the condition of the air inside your home matter even when the pollution originated outdoors.

For current wildfire recommendations, EPA guidance is available at Indoor Air Filtration, updated July 28, 2026.

Portable air purifiers: effective, but room-scale

A portable cleaner pulls room air through a filter and returns cleaner air. Its practical coverage is the room or connected area where it operates, not automatically the entire house. Put it where people spend time, keep the intake and outlet unobstructed, and run it longer or at a higher speed when more particle removal is needed. Higher speed and longer operation also increase noise and electricity use.

How to choose a size

For wildfire smoke, EPA advises choosing a unit with a smoke clean air delivery rate (CADR) of at least two-thirds of the room’s area in square feet. A 300-square-foot room therefore calls for at least 200 cfm under that rule. EPA’s general consumer sizing table lists 195 cfm for 300 square feet with an 8-foot ceiling; the figures come from different guidance contexts, so rounding the wildfire calculation upward is sensible.

Room situation Selection approach Why it matters
Closed room, standard ceiling Match smoke CADR to at least two-thirds of floor area for smoke events Provides a particle-cleaning rate suited to the room volume
High ceiling Size for the larger air volume, not floor area alone More air must pass through the filter to achieve similar cleaning
Open-plan space Use a larger unit or multiple units and size for the connected area Air can move between zones, increasing the effective volume
Multiple bedrooms or floors Place units in occupied rooms or use a central system when compatible One portable unit does not automatically clean remote rooms

CADR is a particle-removal rating. It does not prove that a unit removes volatile organic compounds (VOCs), fuel vapors or odors. For a room-sized option, look for a portable HEPA air cleaner sized for the room and verify its smoke CADR rather than relying on a marketing claim such as “covers the whole home.”

What the filter can and cannot remove

HEPA-style or other high-efficiency particle filters target airborne particles such as fine smoke particles (PM2.5), dust and pollen. Gas removal requires activated carbon or another absorbent designed for gases. EPA notes that widely used, standardized performance ratings for gas removal are not available for portable filters, so a particle CADR cannot be used as evidence of VOC performance.

Placement and upkeep

  • Place the cleaner in the room people occupy most, especially a designated cleaner-air room during smoke.
  • Leave clearance around grilles and do not block the discharge with furniture, curtains or walls.
  • Use a higher fan setting during a pollution spike, then lower it if noise or energy use becomes a problem.
  • Inspect the filter and replace it when it is dirty or overloaded, following the manufacturer’s instructions. A clogged filter reduces airflow and therefore reduces cleaning.

Central HVAC filtration: broader coverage with conditions

A central filter can treat air throughout a home only when air is actually passing through the forced-air heating or cooling system. EPA recommends MERV 13, or the highest efficiency rating the system can accommodate. A MERV 13 filter is not automatically safe for every furnace, heat pump or air handler: denser media can increase airflow resistance, affect system performance and change energy use.

How to install the right filter

  1. Read the equipment manual or the label on the existing filter slot for the required size and maximum rating.
  2. Ask the manufacturer or an HVAC technician whether the system supports MERV 13 or a lower, highest-compatible rating.
  3. Buy the exact dimensions and install the filter in the airflow direction marked on its frame.
  4. Check that the filter seals in its slot. Air bypassing the edges is unfiltered air.
  5. Run the system’s fan as appropriate for your equipment and comfort needs. More runtime can filter more air but can increase electricity costs and may affect humidity control.

Do not force a thick or high-resistance filter into a slot, remove access panels to make it fit, or assume that a filter labeled MERV 13 will work in every system. A compatible MERV 13 HVAC filter is useful only after compatibility is confirmed.

Outdoor ventilation: when opening windows helps or harms

Ventilation is a dilution strategy, not a purifier. Open windows, use outdoor-air modes and run exhaust fans when outdoor air is cleaner than indoor air and the resulting temperature or humidity is acceptable. During wildfire smoke, heavy traffic pollution or another outdoor episode, ventilation can import pollution faster than it is removed.

Use conditions, not a fixed schedule

  1. Check an official local air-quality report before opening windows. EPA’s Wildfires and Indoor Air Quality guidance explains the relationship between outdoor smoke and indoor exposure.
  2. If outdoor air is acceptable, ventilate briefly or use the building’s outdoor-air system to dilute indoor sources.
  3. If outdoor air is poor, close windows and doors, disable unnecessary outdoor-air intake and use filtration.
  4. Recheck conditions periodically. Airing out the home when smoke has cleared can remove pollutants that accumulated indoors.

During smoke, indoor PM2.5 is generally around 55% to 60% of outdoor levels when doors and windows are closed and portable air cleaners are not in use, according to EPA wildfire-smoke training guidance. The percentage applies only under those stated conditions; filtration can reduce indoor levels further, while leaks and indoor sources can raise them.

Creating a cleaner-air room during wildfire smoke

A cleaner-air room is a closed room where occupants can spend extended time while outdoor smoke is present. EPA’s How to Create a Cleaner Air Room at Home guidance supports this approach.

  1. Choose a room with few windows and doors, preferably away from an attached garage or other pollution source.
  2. Close windows and exterior doors. Seal obvious gaps temporarily if smoke is entering.
  3. Place a portable cleaner so it can circulate room air freely and operate continuously at a tolerable speed.
  4. Avoid adding particles: do not smoke, burn candles, fry food or use aerosol products in the room.
  5. Keep occupants, pets and essential supplies there during the worst conditions, while monitoring heat and comfort.

Smoke protection and cooling can conflict. If windows must remain closed and the home becomes dangerously hot, EPA advises seeking shelter elsewhere rather than accepting prolonged heat exposure.

DIY box-fan cleaners: a conditional alternative

A box fan paired with a properly attached furnace filter can be a lower-cost particle-cleaning option when commercial units are unavailable or unaffordable. EPA considers DIY cleaners potentially effective, but design and construction materially affect airflow and CADR. Commercial units with a known CADR are easier to size and compare.

Safety and performance checks

  • Use a fan and filter arrangement designed for safe airflow; do not create a loose assembly that can tip or pull in unfiltered air.
  • Inspect the filter for loading and replace it when dirty.
  • Keep the assembly away from moisture and combustible materials, and follow the fan manufacturer’s safety instructions.
  • Treat performance as uncertain when CADR has not been measured; size conservatively and use it in the room where people are present.

In one wildfire-smoke event summarized by EPA, a DIY cleaner reduced PM2.5 by about 56% after 90 minutes in a larger room and about 99% within 60 minutes in a smaller room. Those results came from particular rooms, designs and conditions; they are not a universal performance guarantee.

Ozone, gases and other limitations

Avoid adding ozone

Some air-cleaning technologies can generate ozone, a lung irritant. EPA’s wildfire guidance says to use air cleaners certified by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) because they produce little or no ozone. EPA does not certify or endorse individual purifier brands or models. Avoid devices marketed primarily as ozone generators for occupied rooms.

Particles are not gases

Particle filters can reduce smoke and dust without removing gases. If the concern is VOCs or odors, look for a substantial activated-carbon or other gas-absorbent stage and treat performance claims cautiously because no broadly used gas-removal rating system exists. Source control and ventilation with clean outdoor air remain essential for gases.

No device solves every indoor-air problem

Air cleaners do not correct mold moisture, remove a pollutant at its source, or guarantee protection from carbon monoxide. Keep carbon-monoxide alarms installed and working, repair leaks and moisture, and follow professional advice for hazardous contamination.

Using air-quality reports and sensors

Official air-quality reports help decide whether outdoor ventilation is sensible. An indoor particle sensor can show trends and help you evaluate whether closing windows or running a purifier changes readings, but it is a decision aid—not a cleaner, a health diagnosis or a substitute for official information. Sensor readings vary by device placement, calibration and the pollutant measured.

Use a monitor most effectively by placing it away from the purifier’s direct exhaust, recording conditions before and after a change, and interpreting trends rather than treating one number as an exact exposure measurement. EPA discusses reports and sensors as resources in Strategies to Reduce Exposure Indoors.

Choosing an approach by situation

Situation First action Filtration choice Main caution
Cooking particles Use an exhaust hood vented outdoors and reduce the source Portable particle cleaner if needed Do not rely on CADR to remove cooking gases
Clean outdoor air, stale indoor air Ventilate with outdoor air Use HVAC filtration as a supplement Heat, humidity and energy use may limit ventilation
Wildfire smoke Close windows and create a cleaner-air room Portable smoke CADR and compatible HVAC filter Watch indoor heat; leave for safer shelter if necessary
Large open-plan home Estimate the full connected volume Larger or multiple portable units, or central filtration One bedroom-sized unit will not clean every zone
VOCs or persistent odors Find and remove the source; ventilate when outdoor air is clean Activated-carbon stage designed for gases Particle CADR does not establish gas removal
No commercial purifier available Reduce sources and close the home during smoke Carefully built DIY box-fan cleaner CADR and safety may be uncertain

Common mistakes and fixes

Buying by advertised square footage alone

Fix: compare smoke CADR with the room area, then adjust upward for high ceilings, open layouts and unusually high pollution.

Installing MERV 13 without checking the system

Fix: confirm the maximum supported rating and dimensions with the manual, manufacturer or technician. Use the highest compatible rating, not a forced fit.

Opening windows automatically during smoke

Fix: check current outdoor conditions first. Keep windows closed during poor air quality and ventilate when conditions improve.

Expecting a HEPA filter to remove VOCs

Fix: address the source and select activated carbon or another gas-targeted absorbent when appropriate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neglecting the filter

Fix: inspect filters and replace dirty or overloaded media. A purifier with a clogged filter cannot deliver its rated airflow.

A practical household plan

  1. List likely indoor sources and eliminate or isolate them.
  2. Check local outdoor air before ventilating.
  3. Choose a cleaner-air room for smoke events and keep supplies there.
  4. Size a portable unit by smoke CADR, using at least two-thirds of room area in square feet for wildfire smoke.
  5. Confirm HVAC compatibility before selecting MERV 13 or another high-efficiency filter.
  6. Use activated carbon only when gas or odor control is a real need, and do not interpret particle CADR as gas performance.
  7. Maintain filters, keep airflow clear and review conditions as weather changes.

This combination addresses the source, the outdoor condition and the actual pollutant instead of expecting one appliance to solve every indoor-air problem. EPA’s consumer overview, Air Cleaners and Air Filters in the Home, provides the broader framework.
