Where both colorways come from
Nike’s Air Jordan 3 archive lists the model’s original release as 1988, credits Tinker Hatfield as designer and records White/Cement Grey among the original archive colors. The archive also credits Hatfield with creating the elephant-print treatment that became the shoe’s defining visual feature. The elephant print is important because it gives both colorways their shared identity. It appears around the toe and heel, framing the leather panels rather than replacing them. Red details and black or grey components then separate the colorways visually. In other words, the names refer primarily to the dominant upper color, not to two different shoe molds.
The 1988 connection also explains why Nike’s later descriptions emphasize original-style details. Nike’s 2018 Black Cement copy connected that edition with Michael Jordan’s 1988 season and its 30-year anniversary, while the 2024 copy says the newer pair is intended to approach the original’s feel, fit and shape. Those statements establish the design intent of particular releases; they do not mean every retro reproduces every 1988 detail.

The final row describes the practical visual effect of the colors, not a laboratory durability test. White leather can show dirt more visibly than black leather, while the contrast between white panels and grey print is part of White Cement’s appeal. The material and print rows are release-specific observations, so they should not be copied onto an unidentified pair.
Black Cement: what defines it?
Color blocking
Black Cement places black leather over most of the upper. Cement-grey elephant print breaks up the dark base at the toe and heel, while red branding and eyelet details provide the strongest color accent. The result is visually heavier than White Cement and generally easier to coordinate with dark clothing.

The 2024 retro
The recent version covered here is the 2024 retro, SKU DN3707-010. Nike describes it as using smooth leather, elephant-print overlays and Nike Air branding on the heel. Nike’s product copy says the edition is “as close as possible to the feel, fit and shape of the original that released in ’88.” That is Nike’s design claim, not an independent fit test. How the 2024 pair differs from 2018
Comparisons of the specific 2018 and 2024 Black Cement releases identify several construction changes. Sneaker Freaker describes the 2024 pair as having lighter-grey elephant print, smoother leather and a shape closer to the original than the 2018 version. Complex similarly reports less-contrasting print lines, subtler leather texture and a tongue that is shorter and thinner than the 2018 pair. Complex also notes some inconsistency between individual 2024 pairs.
A shorter or thinner tongue changes the visual profile around the collar and can make the shoe look less padded even though it remains the same model. Pair-to-pair variation is another reason to inspect photographs of the exact size and listing instead of relying on one review sample. These observations apply to the two releases being compared. They are not manufacturer guarantees for every Black Cement retro, and they should not be used to identify an older pair without checking additional details.
Historical Nike Air branding
Nike’s 2018 SNKRS copy connected that anniversary edition to Michael Jordan’s 1988 season and emphasized that it retained Nike Air branding. The heel mark matters to collectors because branding can change between retros. Check the heel of the exact release you are considering instead of assuming that every Black Cement has the same logo.
White Cement: what defines it?

It also says the elephant print was updated to replicate the 1988 original. Nike’s launch page calls the concept an aged aesthetic that “redefines timeless”; that wording is marketing language describing the intended appearance. What “Reimagined” does—and does not—mean
“Reimagined” identifies this particular vintage-treated edition. The yellowed midsole, eyelets and back tab are deliberate design choices on that release, not proof that every White Cement Jordan 3 will age in the same way or arrive with yellowed components. When comparing another White Cement retro, inspect its release year and product description separately.
That distinction matters when shopping used pairs. A seller may describe natural aging on an older White Cement, while the 2023 Reimagined pair was designed to arrive with an aged look. Ask for clear photos of the midsole, eyelets and back tab so you can distinguish the named treatment from ordinary wear, dirt or uneven discoloration.
Are they the same shoe in different colors?
At the silhouette level, yes. Both are Air Jordan 3s built around the same design language: a mid-cut upper, elephant-print overlays, perforated paneling and visible Air cushioning. The colorway changes the visual balance, while the release date can change the execution.
At the material and collector level, no two retros should be treated as automatically identical. Tongue and overall shape
Complex’s comparison of the 2018 and 2024 Black Cement reports a shorter, thinner tongue on the newer pair and a shape intended to move closer to the original. Shape differences can change the visual profile when worn, especially around the collar and tongue, even when the outsole and color blocking remain familiar. Nike’s “feel, fit and shape” wording is an intention stated in its product copy, not a measured sizing result; do not assume that it changes the size you should order.
Heel branding
Nike Air on the heel is historically significant because some retros use different branding. Both recent editions discussed here are described with Nike Air heel branding, but that should be verified on the specific release. A product listing that omits clear heel photographs deserves extra caution. Check both heel tabs for matching placement, color and lettering before treating a listing as the advertised edition.
Aging treatments
White Cement Reimagined deliberately adds yellowed details. That treatment should not be confused with accidental oxidation or with the appearance of every older White Cement pair. Black Cement’s recent description focuses instead on smooth leather, elephant print and original-inspired shape. If a listing presents yellowed components as proof that any White Cement is the 2023 Reimagined, its description is incomplete.
Production variation
Complex reported some inconsistency between individual 2024 Black Cement pairs. Small differences in grain, print placement or finish therefore do not automatically establish that one pair is fake. Compare the SKU, labels, construction and seller evidence together, and remember that a review’s sample may not represent every pair in the run.
Which Jordan 3 colorway should you buy?
Choose Black Cement if you want:
- A darker, less visually bright upper.
- Black leather as the dominant color with red accents.
- A pair whose current retro discussion centers on an original-inspired shape and Nike Air heel branding.

- Confirm the release name and year. Record whether the listing identifies the pair as the 2024 Black Cement or the 2023 White Cement Reimagined, rather than accepting a generic “Jordan 3 Cement” title.
- Match the SKU. The recent Black Cement reference is DN3707-010; the recent White Cement Reimagined reference is DN3707-100. A mismatch does not automatically prove a fake, but it means the listing needs closer review.
- Inspect the heel. Check whether the branding is Nike Air and whether both heel tabs match the documented edition.
