Choose an air fryer if you mostly cook small portions of fries, vegetables, nuggets, wings or other foods where a crisp surface matters. Choose an oven toaster grill (OTG) if you regularly bake cakes or bread, toast, grill, use larger trays or need a rotisserie. Some OTGs include convection, but OTG is a function category rather than a guarantee of fan-assisted cooking, so check the exact model.
There is no fair universal winner for speed or electricity use. Results depend on the appliance size, food quantity, temperature, preheating, cooking method and your local tariff. The practical decision is capacity and cooking style: compact, crisp-focused batches point to an air fryer; broader oven work points to an OTG.

Air fryer and OTG: what is the actual difference?
An air fryer is a compact countertop cooker built around rapid hot-air circulation and a perforated basket or tray. Food sits close to the heating element and moving air, which helps brown exposed surfaces with little or no added oil. Its small chamber is an advantage for a single meal or a few portions, because less space has to be heated and the food is usually close to the airflow.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →OTG means oven, toaster and grill. It is an oven format with heating elements and a larger chamber, usually with racks or trays. Depending on the model, it can bake, toast, grill and sometimes turn food on a rotisserie. “OTG” does not by itself tell you whether the appliance has a fan: convection is a model-specific feature.

Whirlpool describes the broad capacity distinction this way: “Air fryers often only allow you to cook about two servings at once, while convection ovens allow you to cook significantly more.” Treat that as a category-level comparison, not a guarantee for every capacity or basket design. Whirlpool’s air-fryer and convection-oven comparison also explains why both appliances can circulate hot air while still serving different cooking needs.
KitchenAid makes the same practical distinction: air frying emphasizes crisping, while an oven offers a wider range of cooking methods. Its explanation of air frying versus oven cooking methods is useful when you are deciding between a specialist appliance and a general-purpose one.

You cook small portions frequently
An air fryer suits one or two people, quick side dishes and meals made in batches that fit one basket. Fries, potato wedges, nuggets, vegetables, wings and reheated snacks benefit from a perforated surface and strong airflow. Plan around the food you actually cook: a printed litre number does not tell you how much can sit in one layer without crowding.
You value browning and crisp texture
The basket exposes more of the food to moving air than a deep solid pan. You may still need to shake the basket or turn larger pieces partway through cooking, because airflow is not automatically even around every surface. Overfilling reduces exposure and can leave the centre or lower layer soft.
You want a compact specialist appliance
An air fryer takes less counter and storage space than most OTGs, although the drawer and top or rear vents still need the clearance specified in the manual. It is a focused purchase: excellent for crisping and roasting small quantities, less suitable as your only appliance if you bake regularly.

You prefer a short, repeatable routine
For common foods, the routine is straightforward: preheat only when the manual or recipe calls for it, spread food with space around it, set the temperature and time, then inspect and turn as needed. A smaller chamber can make repeated snack-sized cooking convenient, but it does not guarantee that every meal will finish faster than an OTG.

When an OTG is the better buy
You bake cakes, bread or pastries
Baking needs a stable oven chamber, a suitable pan and enough vertical and horizontal room for the batter to rise. An OTG gives you rack positions and a conventional tray format, making it easier to use loaf tins, cake pans and pizza trays. Check the model’s temperature range, timer behavior and preheating instructions before buying.
You toast or grill regularly
Toast, open sandwiches and grilled foods are natural OTG jobs because the appliance can use its upper or lower heating elements and a wire rack. Grill performance depends on element placement, rack height and the included tray. Confirm that “grill” is listed as a selectable function rather than inferred from the product name.
You need a larger cooking footprint
Large pizzas, several slices of toast, a roasting tray or food for a family are easier when the chamber accepts a full-size pan. An OTG’s litre rating is still not a direct measure of dinner portions: internal width, depth, rack positions and the clearance needed around the food determine what fits.
You want rotisserie capability
Some OTGs include a rotisserie rod and forks, while others do not. If turning a whole chicken or another spit-roasted item matters, verify the exact model’s accessory list, maximum food dimensions and operating instructions. Do not assume that every OTG can run a rotisserie simply because it has a grill mode.
Capacity: why litres do not tell the whole story
Air-fryer and OTG capacities are not interchangeable measurements. A basket’s litre figure describes its enclosed volume, but the usable cooking area is often limited by the need to keep food in a relatively open layer. An OTG’s volume includes space above and below the rack, yet a tall pan, heating elements and door clearance reduce practical capacity.

As a concrete air-fryer example, Philips lists the NA130/00 as a 6.2-litre model and gives example loads of up to 800 g of fries, eight chicken drumsticks or 800 g of vegetables. Those are the manufacturer’s stated examples, not a promise that every 6.2-litre basket holds the same portions. See the Philips 1000 Series Airfryer NA130/00 product page.
For a meaningful comparison, measure the foods and pans you use:
- Measure the basket’s flat usable width and depth, not only its height.
- Check whether your usual pizza, loaf tin or baking tray fits without touching the walls or elements.
- Allow space for airflow and for removing a hot basket or tray safely.
- Consider how many rounds you are willing to cook for a normal meal.
Can an OTG air-fry?
An OTG can produce crisp results, but the answer depends on its design. A conventional OTG without a fan circulates heat mainly through the positioning of its heating elements and natural convection. A convection OTG adds a fan to move hot air and is closer to the airflow pattern associated with air frying, although the chamber, tray and distance from the elements are different.

For example, Philips India lists the 25-litre Viva Collection HD6975/00 with bake, toast, grill and rotisserie-related functions, while the 36-litre Avance Collection HD6976/00 explicitly includes convection mode. Compare the exact listings: HD6975/00 product details and HD6976/00 product details.
How to improve crisping in an existing convection oven
- Read the oven manual to confirm that fan-assisted cooking is intended for the accessory you plan to use.
- Use a perforated basket or low-sided oven pan that fits securely and leaves room around the edges.
- Spread food in a single layer where practical; avoid covering the holes with a solid liner.
- Turn or rotate the food partway through cooking so more surfaces meet the moving air.
- Inspect browning early and adjust the time or temperature using the appliance’s stated guidance.
Accessory fit and heat tolerance matter. A basket that blocks the fan, touches an element or cannot be removed safely is not a suitable substitute for an air fryer.
Is an air fryer enough for baking?
It can bake small cakes, muffins, breads and other items when the pan fits and the recipe is adapted to the compact chamber. The limitation is space: a basket may accept only a small tin, and the close heating element can brown the top before the centre is done. You may need smaller batches, a lower temperature or closer checks, following the appliance manual and a recipe written for that format.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
An OTG is the more flexible choice for regular baking because it accepts conventional pans and provides rack positions. A convection OTG can improve heat circulation, but fan behavior can change how quickly the surface browns. Use the model’s instructions rather than assuming that an air-fryer time or temperature transfers unchanged.

Speed and electricity: what you can and cannot conclude
A small air fryer may reach cooking temperature quickly and can be efficient for a small portion. An OTG may use more chamber volume but can cook a larger tray in one cycle. A direct winner cannot be declared without matching a specific air fryer and OTG, food quantity, starting temperature, preheating method, cooking time and local electricity tariff.
Philips product material uses “up to 50% faster” and “up to 70% energy” language for its air fryer compared with its oven. Those are manufacturer claims tied to the company’s own comparison context, not an independent or universal air-fryer-versus-OTG result. Treat them as product marketing, not as a guaranteed saving for your kitchen.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A buying checklist that avoids the common mistakes
1. Start with your largest normal meal
Write down the largest quantity you cook at least once a week. If it requires multiple crowded air-fryer rounds, an OTG may be the better primary appliance. If most meals fit comfortably in one basket, the OTG’s extra volume may remain unused.
2. List the cooking modes you actually use
- Mostly fries, vegetables, nuggets, wings and reheating: prioritize basket area, airflow and easy cleaning.
- Cakes, bread, pizza and toast: prioritize internal dimensions, rack positions, temperature control and preheating guidance.
- Grilling or rotisserie: confirm those functions and every required accessory on the exact model page.
- Mixed use: consider whether you need one broad appliance or would use a compact air fryer alongside an oven you already own.
3. Check measurements, not just litres
Measure the counter space, storage location, door swing and ventilation clearance. For an OTG, measure your largest pan. For an air fryer, measure the basket’s flat area and the clearance needed to pull out the drawer.

4. Verify the electrical and installation details
Read the model manual for rated power, plug requirements, heat clearance and cookware guidance. The cited Philips OTG examples are rated at 1,500 W and 2,000 W respectively; a different model may have a different load. Use an appropriate outlet and follow local electrical guidance rather than relying on a generic extension lead.
5. Compare what is in the box
Check for a baking tray, wire rack, crumb tray, rotisserie rod, forks, basket or removable plates. An apparently cheaper appliance can require separate accessories for the foods you intend to cook.
6. Plan the cleaning routine
Air fryers concentrate grease in a basket and drawer. OTGs spread crumbs and splatter across trays, racks, the crumb tray, door glass and chamber walls. Choose the format whose cleaning work you will realistically do after each use.
Practical operating habits
For an air fryer
- Do not crowd the basket; airflow is part of the cooking method.
- Shake or turn food when the recipe or manual indicates, especially for unevenly sized pieces.
- Use cookware and liners only when the manufacturer permits them and they cannot contact the heating element.
- Let the appliance cool before cleaning, and follow its instructions for removable parts.
For an OTG
- Preheat when the recipe or manual requires a fully heated chamber.
- Select the correct element combination for bake, toast or grill instead of assuming one setting suits all foods.
- Place pans on the recommended rack and leave clearance around food and heating elements.
- Use the crumb tray and clean accumulated grease and crumbs according to the manual.
Safety, health and realistic expectations
Follow the exact appliance manual for clearance, heat-safe cookware, accessory use, cleaning and electrical requirements. Do not treat “air fried” as automatically low-calorie or healthier: the appliance type alone does not establish a nutritional outcome, and the ingredients and amount of oil still matter.
Neither appliance is maintenance-free. A basket can be easier to wash after a small snack, while an OTG may be more practical for one large tray but takes longer to clean after grilling. Choose the routine you can sustain, not only the feature list.
Decision guide: which one should you buy?
- Choose an air fryer when your normal portions are small, crisping is the priority and you value a compact, focused appliance.
- Choose an OTG when baking, toasting, grilling, rotisserie cooking or larger trays are central to your kitchen.
- Choose a convection OTG when you want the larger oven format plus fan-assisted circulation; confirm that “convection” is specified for the exact model.
- Use your existing convection oven first if you only want crispier results and can safely fit a perforated basket or low-sided pan, leaving room for airflow and turning food during cooking.
- Consider both only when you regularly need the OTG’s large-chamber functions and also cook small crisp-focused batches often enough to justify another countertop appliance.
The clearest buying rule is simple: buy for the portion size and cooking modes you use every week. Air fryers specialize in compact crisping; OTGs provide a larger, more versatile oven cavity. Neither category wins every kitchen, and neither should be chosen from wattage or litre numbers alone.
