Choose a basket-style air fryer if you mostly cook small portions and prioritize crisping; choose a convection oven if you need more capacity and broader cooking options. Before buying either, check whether an oven you already own has an air-fry mode or compatible tray. These are general differences, not guarantees for every model.
How an air fryer differs from a convection oven
Air fryers use compact, circulating heat
An air fryer does not fry food by immersion. A heating element and fan circulate hot air around food in a compact basket or tray. The smaller cooking space concentrates airflow, which can help produce a crisp exterior. Consumer Reports describes the method as convection baking in a small space (How to Pick the Perfect Air Fryer, updated November 20, 2025).

Convection ovens move air through a larger cavity
A convection oven also uses a fan to circulate hot air, but its larger interior can handle bigger batches, trays, and multiple dishes. Depending on the appliance, it may also bake, roast, broil, and reheat. Some ranges, wall ovens, and toaster ovens add a dedicated air-fry setting; certain models use a mesh basket or perforated tray to expose more of the food to moving air. Features and results vary by model (Toaster and Toaster Oven Buying Guide, updated May 11, 2026; How to Air-Fry Without an Air Fryer, updated June 22, 2025).
Air fryer vs. convection oven at a glance
| What matters | Basket-style air fryer | Convection oven |
|---|---|---|
| Crisping small portions | Often the stronger fit for small batches. Consumer Reports reports that dedicated air fryers generally produced crisper results than toaster ovens with air-fry modes in its evaluations. This does not establish that every air fryer outperforms every full-size convection oven (Best Air Fryer Toaster Ovens of 2026, updated August 6, 2026). | Can crisp food, particularly with a dedicated air-fry mode and suitable basket or tray; results depend on the specific oven. |
| Batch size | The basket limits how much fits at once. Check its usable dimensions and whether your usual foods fit in a single layer. | Usually offers more room for larger batches, trays, or multiple dishes. Compare interior dimensions and rack positions, not just listed capacity. |
| Cooking range | Many models add functions such as reheating, baking, or dehydrating. Verify which functions the model actually includes. | Can combine air-frying with convection cooking, baking, roasting, broiling, and reheating, depending on the appliance. |
| Space and handling | A compact basket may suit small portions, but check both the appliance footprint and basket size against your counter and cooking habits. | A countertop model may take more counter space; a full-size oven uses an existing installation. Its larger cavity can serve more cooking purposes. |
| Accessories | The basket or tray is part of the appliance design; capacity and cleaning effort differ across models. | Some ovens include a perforated tray or mesh basket, while some manufacturers sell them separately. Confirm inclusion and compatibility in the manual. |
Which one suits your cooking?
Choose a basket-style air fryer for small, crisp batches
Start with basket air fryers if you usually make modest portions of fries, wings, vegetables, or reheated leftovers and value crisping and convenience. Compare usable capacity, controls, cleaning, warranty, and whether you will use the extra functions. A basket that requires food to be piled up rather than spread out may not suit the results you want.

Choose a convection oven for capacity and versatility
Compare convection ovens or toaster ovens with a dedicated air-fry mode if you regularly cook larger portions or want one appliance for tasks such as baking, roasting, broiling, reheating, and air-frying. Interior dimensions and rack positions reveal more about what fits than the capacity figure alone.
Check your existing oven before buying another appliance
If you already have a convection range, wall oven, or toaster oven, look for a convection-roast or air-fry setting and check the manual for tray guidance. Consumer Reports reports that fries cooked using the oven modes it tested were crisp, though not quite as visually crisp as its countertop-air-fryer results. A separate air-fry tray may be included or sold separately; do not assume a tray fits unless the appliance instructions or manufacturer confirm compatibility (How to Air-Fry Without an Air Fryer; Best Wall Oven Buying Guide).

What the reported cooking-time figures mean
Consumer Reports offers two different timing observations, neither of which should be treated as a universal guarantee. In its 2026 comparison, a staffer who had cooked with both appliance types in her kitchen observed that cooking could be up to about 40 percent quicker, depending on the food. Separately, Consumer Reports reported that air-fry functions saved 20 to 30 minutes versus a regular bake setting in tests of two ranges and one wall oven in 2025; those ovens did not need to preheat in air-fry mode. The second result applies to that test setup, not to all ovens or recipes (2026 comparison; 2025 tests).
