The trade-off is waiting: thicker pieces and environmental conditions can extend drying time. Store unused clay airtight, since exposure to air starts the drying process.

How to assess safety for a child
Neither “air-dry” nor “polymer” by itself establishes that a particular product is appropriate for every child. Read the exact product’s age directions, warnings and use instructions. ACMI recommends its AP Seal for creative products used by children in sixth grade or younger. The seal indicates that a product was evaluated as non-injurious when used as intended; it does not mean the material can be eaten or that directions can be ignored. ACMI’s materials-safety guidance explains the seal and its scope.
Age recommendations can differ by manufacturer and product. Sculpey does not recommend its polymer clay for children under eight and advises close supervision during baking. Treat that as Sculpey’s guidance, not a universal age rule for all polymer clays. Check the package for the product you plan to use.

Polymer-clay curing: the adult’s checklist
Sculpey’s safety guidance applies to its products; follow the instructions for the specific clay you have, since curing directions can vary.
- Read the package for the required baking temperature and time, and follow both exactly.
- Use an oven thermometer; Sculpey notes that an oven’s dial may not show its actual temperature.
- Have an adult manage the oven and supervise the baking. Do not overbake the clay or microwave it.
- Ventilate the area while curing.
- Wash hands after handling the clay.
- Do not use cured clay for food or beverage service.

Match the clay to the project
- Pick air-dry clay when avoiding an oven is the priority, a child benefits from easier manipulation, and the project can dry undisturbed. Keep in mind that the finished material is not waterproof.
- Pick polymer clay when a child is old enough for the product’s guidance, an adult can supervise curing, and the project benefits from extended shaping time or a sturdier cured result.
