Short answer: no AI writing detector has been shown to be universally reliable for academic papers. In a 2026 peer-reviewed comparison of 160 papers with known authorship, Pangram tracked the tested papers most closely overall, while Turnitin, GPTZero and Copyleaks substantially underestimated some fully AI-generated, hybrid and edited-AI texts. That result is specific to the study’s samples and service versions—not a permanent league table.
The safest academic practice is to use a detector score as a reason to investigate, never as proof that a student used AI. Turnitin’s own guidance says its model can misidentify human, AI-generated and AI-paraphrased writing and must not be the sole basis for adverse action. Human review, drafts, source checking and a fair opportunity to explain remain essential.

What the evidence says about the “best” detector
The strongest current evidence points to a conditional answer rather than a single winner. The 2026 study Who wrote this? Evaluating the reliability of AI detection tools in higher education tested four services on 160 academic papers whose authorship category was known. The papers were divided equally into fully AI-generated, hybrid human/AI, humanised AI and fully human groups. Pangram’s scores were closest to the known ground truth across the tested categories. In the fully AI-generated group, the median scores from Turnitin, GPTZero and Copyleaks were below 20%; Turnitin reported 0% for that category in this experiment. Pangram also tracked the hybrid and humanised groups more closely than the other services.
Those results answer a narrow question: how did particular versions of four services perform on this study’s generated and human samples? They do not establish that Pangram will be most accurate on every discipline, language, assignment or future model output. A separate 2024 student-writing study produced a different ranking, and a 2024 comparison of 30 tools found serious failures across many products. Detector performance is therefore better understood as a measurement problem with changing conditions than as a permanent product contest.

For an academic decision, the practical “best method” is a controlled, transparent process: use a detector only as one signal; examine both false positives and false negatives; verify the text’s provenance; and apply institutional policy through a trained human reviewer.
Read the 2026 higher-education comparison, the 2024 student-writing study, and the 2024 30-tool essay comparison.
Why detector rankings change from one study to another
An AI detector does not observe authorship directly. It classifies the submitted text according to patterns learned from a particular model, language distribution, text length and threshold. Change any of those conditions and the apparent winner can change. A fair comparison must therefore report the same conditions for every service.
Text category
Fully generated prose is only one case. Academic work may contain a human-written introduction, AI-generated paragraphs, extensive human revision, translation, grammar correction or paraphrasing. The 2026 comparison explicitly separated fully AI-generated, hybrid, humanised-AI and fully human papers because a service that performs well on untouched model output may miss text that has been edited.
False positives and false negatives
A false positive labels human writing as potentially AI-generated. A false negative fails to flag AI-generated writing. Both matter, but they create different harms. A false positive can trigger an accusation against an innocent student; a false negative can leave prohibited assistance undetected. A headline accuracy number can conceal an unacceptable error rate in the case an institution cares about most.
Meaning of the displayed score
A percentage may be a calibrated estimate, a classifier confidence score or a thresholded category. Percentages from different vendors are not automatically comparable. “20%” in one report does not necessarily represent the same probability or quantity of AI-written prose as “20%” in another.
Length and language
Short passages provide less statistical evidence than long papers, and detector behaviour can differ by language, proficiency and discipline. Turnitin’s own product documentation describes different model coverage by language. A result from an English essay should not be generalized to Spanish or Japanese work without checking the relevant model and limitations.

Ground truth and sampling
Controlled examples have known authorship; real institutional submissions usually do not. That distinction is decisive. A high flag rate in a thesis corpus is not a verified prevalence of misconduct unless the authorship of those theses has been independently established.
Version, date and generation procedure
Detection performance can change as text-generation systems, paraphrasers and detector models are updated. A reproducible report records the service version, model family, access date, prompt or editing procedure, text length, language and decision threshold. Without those details, two studies with the same product name may not be testing the same system.
What the major academic-paper comparison found in 2026
The peer-reviewed 2026 comparison is currently the closest match to the question of academic papers because it used a sizeable, balanced set with known categories.
| Category | Sample | What the study reported | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fully AI-generated | 40 papers | Pangram was closest to the known ground truth overall. Turnitin, GPTZero and Copyleaks had median scores below 20%; Turnitin returned 0% in this test. | A strong warning against treating a low score as proof that no AI was used. The finding applies to the study’s generated papers and tested versions. |
| Hybrid human/AI | 40 papers | Pangram aligned more closely with the known mixture; GPTZero and Copyleaks tended to underestimate AI content. | Mixed authorship is harder to quantify than an untouched AI sample. |
| Humanised AI | 40 papers | Pangram again tracked the ground truth more closely than the other tested services. | Editing or paraphrasing can reduce detector confidence and increase disagreement between tools. |
| Fully human | 40 papers | The study included a known-human control group for comparing false-positive behaviour. | A control group is necessary before a detector can be evaluated for fairness. |
The study also ran Pangram over 1,163 master’s theses submitted during the 2024–2025 academic year. It flagged 529 submissions, or 45.5%, for potential AI use. Those theses did not have known ground truth. The 45.5% figure is therefore a share flagged by that tool in that corpus, not a verified misconduct rate, an error rate or an estimate of how many students used AI.
Use the study’s result in the way it supports: Pangram performed closest to ground truth under those controlled conditions, while the other services missed substantial portions of some AI categories. Do not turn it into a universal claim about every paper or future release.
How the 2024 student-writing comparison differs
The 2024 peer-reviewed study Students are using large language models and AI detectors can often detect their use tested GPTZero, Winston, Originality.ai and ZeroGPT on student human-written, AI-generated and disguised writing. Its reported accuracy for human-versus-AI writing was 0.87 for GPTZero, 0.80 for Winston, 0.91 for Originality.ai and 0.91 for ZeroGPT. In the human-versus-disguised condition, accuracy fell to 0.82, 0.74, 0.82 and 0.79 respectively.
The study also reported that Winston flagged nearly half of the human sample as false positives. GPTZero, Originality.ai and ZeroGPT produced lower but nonzero false-positive counts. Across the particular student results, the authors reported an average false-positive detection rate of 14% for GPTZero, Originality.ai and ZeroGPT and an average of 5% of AI users escaping detection. Those percentages describe that sample and protocol, not an expected rate for current versions.

| Winston | 0.80 | 0.74 | Nearly half of the human sample was flagged in the study. |
| Originality.ai | 0.91 | 0.82 | Study-specific values; not a product guarantee. |
| ZeroGPT | 0.91 | 0.79 | Study-specific values; performance fell on disguised text. |
This study explains why a ranking can reverse. Its student samples, writing tasks, generation process and definitions of disguised writing were not the same as the 2026 academic-paper experiment. Comparing the numbers as though they came from one benchmark would be misleading.
What the 30-tool essay study adds
Chaka Chaka’s 2024 study examined 40 university essays across English first-language and second-language writers and two undergraduate modules. Of the 30 tools tested, only Copyleaks and Undetectable AI correctly identified all essay sets in the two language categories as human-written. Nine tools misidentified all essay sets. The conclusion was that many tested detectors—especially free-to-use services—were not fit for purpose in that bounded experiment.
The sample was small and the tools’ versions and test protocol were tied to that study. Its value is not a permanent ranking; it demonstrates how language background and task design can expose false positives that a simpler benchmark misses. Read the full Journal of Applied Learning and Teaching study for its definitions and test setup.
What “works best” means in practice
If an institution must compare detectors, evaluate them against the decision it actually needs to make rather than asking for one accuracy number.
For screening fully generated text
The 2026 experiment gives Pangram the strongest result among the four tested services for its fully generated papers. Even there, the other tools’ low scores show why a negative result cannot clear a paper by itself. A detector that misses AI text can produce a false sense of security.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For mixed or edited submissions
Hybrid and humanised papers were harder for GPTZero and Copyleaks to score accurately in the 2026 comparison, while Pangram was closer to the known mixture. The 2024 student study likewise found lower accuracy on disguised writing than on straightforward human-versus-AI comparisons. Treat a mixed-text score as an indication for closer examination, not a measurement of the exact percentage of AI contribution.
For multilingual or second-language writing
Start by verifying that the service supports the submission’s language and that the study or vendor documentation covers that language. The 30-tool essay comparison’s first-language and second-language samples produced substantial false-positive concerns. A language mismatch is a reason to lower confidence, not to raise suspicion.

For real institutional corpora
Separate a flagging rate from an error rate. The 1,163-thesis scan had no verified authorship labels, so its 45.5% flag share cannot tell an institution how often the detector was right. To estimate error, reviewers need a representative sample whose authorship has been independently established.
Turnitin reports: how to read the score correctly
Turnitin says its overall AI-writing percentage applies to qualifying prose that its model determines could be AI-generated or AI-generated and modified with a paraphraser or bypasser tool. It is not a percentage of every character, citation, table or formatting element in a submission.

Turnitin describes that range as less reliable and warns about false positives. A reviewer should not convert an asterisk into a precise probability.
Turnitin’s release notes state that only the English AI detector includes AI-paraphrasing and bypasser detection. The Spanish and Japanese detectors do not include those features. This is a description of Turnitin’s own product, not independent comparative validation. Check the current report guidance at Using the AI Writing Report and the model details in its release notes.
Most importantly, Turnitin states: “Our AI writing detection model may not always be accurate (it may misidentify human-written, AI-generated, and AI-paraphrased text), so it should not be used as the sole basis for adverse actions against a student.” That warning should govern how an institution uses every detector, not just Turnitin.

A detector result should start a documented inquiry. The following sequence reduces both wrongful accusations and missed violations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Define the rule first. State which forms of assistance are allowed, whether disclosure is required, and what evidence is considered. Do not change the standard after seeing a student’s score.
- Record the conditions. Save the detector name, version or report date, language, text length, score display and highlighted passages. Record whether the paper is wholly human, mixed, translated or edited if that is known.
- Check the text itself. Review citations, quotations, factual claims, abrupt changes in voice, unsupported references and passages that do not answer the assignment. These are prompts for questions, not automatic proof of AI.
- Request process evidence. Ask for outlines, notes, drafts, document revision history, source annotations or other work created during the assignment. Absence of one item is not proof of misconduct; the evidence should be considered together.
- Invite an explanation. Give the student a meaningful chance to explain drafting, translation, editing and any permitted tools. A short oral discussion about the argument and sources can test understanding without treating a detector score as a verdict.
- Apply policy consistently. A trained reviewer should weigh all evidence, document reasons and provide an appeal route. Do not impose an adverse action solely because a percentage crossed an arbitrary threshold.
- Audit outcomes. Periodically compare flags with resolved cases, disaggregated by language, course and assignment. If false positives cluster in a group, suspend or recalibrate the screening practice.
What students should do if a paper is flagged
- Keep outlines, research notes, drafts and version history while writing, rather than relying on the final file alone.
- Preserve citations and links that show how each claim was developed. Be ready to explain your thesis, evidence and revisions in your own words.
- Ask which policy was applied and what the detector actually measured. A low or high percentage is not a finding of authorship.
- Provide relevant evidence calmly: drafts, timestamps, comments, peer feedback, writing-centre records or permitted tool disclosures.
- If the process lacks a human review or appeal opportunity, use the institution’s published academic-integrity procedure.
These steps protect legitimate authorship; they are not instructions for evading detection. The goal is an accurate account of how the work was produced.

Common mistakes when comparing detectors
Declaring a permanent winner
Publishing the 2026 Pangram result as “the most accurate detector” without naming the sample, categories and versions overstates the evidence. Rankings can reverse, as the 2024 studies show.
Reporting only accuracy
Always request the confusion behind the headline: false positives on human writing and false negatives on AI writing. If a paper gives only one measure, say what it leaves unknown.
Treating a percentage as authorship proof
A score is a model output. It does not identify the person who wrote a passage, establish intent, or show that an academic-integrity rule was broken.

Humanised and hybrid writing produced different results from fully generated text in the 2026 comparison, and disguised writing lowered accuracy in the 2024 student study. A single threshold is especially unsuitable for these cases.
Generalizing a flag rate from unlabelled submissions
The 45.5% Pangram flag share in 1,163 master’s theses has no known ground truth. Calling it a misconduct prevalence or detector error rate is incorrect.
Overlooking language coverage
Model features differ by language. Turnitin’s English detector includes capabilities that its Spanish and Japanese detectors do not, and the essay study found problems across first- and second-language groups.
A practical decision framework
| Question | If the answer is yes | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Does the study use known authorship and the same text category? | The evidence is relevant to the case. | Use the result as a limited performance estimate, not a guarantee. |
| Are false positives and false negatives both reported? | Error trade-offs are visible. | Choose the risk profile that matches the policy, then add human review. |
| Does the language and length match the assignment? | Generalization is more defensible. | Still verify the service’s current coverage and date. |
| Is the corpus real student work without verified authorship? | Only flagging behaviour is known. | Do not infer prevalence, guilt or accuracy. |
| Is the result near a vendor’s low-confidence range? | Uncertainty is high. | Seek process evidence and discussion; never use the score alone. |
For procurement or internal validation, create a local test set with consent: known human papers from the relevant courses, controlled AI outputs, mixed drafts and edited examples in the languages actually taught. Freeze the detector version and protocol, then report every category and error type. A local benchmark cannot predict every future case, but it is more informative than importing a headline number from an unrelated study.

Pangram performed closest to ground truth in the 2026 comparison of 160 academic papers, but that finding does not make it a universal judge of authorship. Turnitin, GPTZero and Copyleaks missed substantial AI content in some of that experiment; other 2024 studies produced different rankings and documented false positives. The methods that work best are therefore methodological: known ground truth, matched language and text type, transparent versions, reporting of both error kinds, and a human-led review that treats detector output as one clue among several.
