You can help a friend practise for an oral exam with an AI assistant by giving it their course notes, asking it to pose one question at a time, and checking its explanations against those notes. For a genuinely private, offline setup, confirm that the chosen model processes every prompt on the device without cloud fallback; “on-device” alone does not guarantee that every request stays offline. Treat this as a practice workflow, not a proven way to improve exam results.
What an AI viva partner can do
A useful study assistant can explain concepts, generate practice questions, quiz a learner, and support flashcard-style review. OpenAI describes those functions for its online Study mode, which can guide a learner through step-by-step explanations and exam preparation; it also warns that answers can be wrong and should be checked against reliable material. OpenAI’s Study mode FAQ is a useful reference for the interaction style, but Study mode is an online comparator, not an offline solution.

For viva preparation, the value is in making the learner retrieve and explain what they know. The assistant should prompt, listen or receive a written answer, and then help identify gaps. It should not replace the course notes, instructor guidance, or the learner’s own reasoning.

Local inference
“Local inference” means the model processes prompts on the user’s device. Ollama’s privacy policy says that prompts, responses, and model interactions processed locally are not collected, stored, transmitted, or accessible to Ollama. The same policy distinguishes cloud-hosted model use and describes limited device or usage metadata, so that statement applies to the local configuration it describes—not automatically to every AI app, model, operating system, backup, or network setup. Read Ollama’s privacy policy before relying on a provider’s privacy description.

Offline operation
Offline is a stronger claim: the selected model and application should continue working without a network connection, and prompts should not be routed to a cloud service. A product’s “on-device” label is not enough to establish this. Apple says Apple Intelligence centers on on-device processing but may use Private Cloud Compute for more computationally complex requests. Apple’s Apple Intelligence overview illustrates why users should check how a particular request is handled rather than infer complete offline operation from a feature label.
Before entering a friend’s notes, verify the actual app, model, and settings; check the provider’s current privacy statement; and, if offline use is essential, test the workflow with the network disconnected. A provider privacy statement is a claim about its service, not an independent audit of the whole device or every installed component.

A practical viva-practice workflow
- Choose material the learner is allowed to share. Use the friend’s course notes, syllabus, or permitted readings. Remove personal information or material they should not upload or disclose. Check the school’s and instructor’s AI rules before using an assistant, particularly if the exam has specific preparation restrictions.
- Load the notes into the assistant. Use a local-capable application and model if privacy and offline use are requirements. Ask the assistant to rely on the supplied notes, say when an answer is not supported by them, and avoid filling gaps with guesses.
- Set the viva format. Ask it to pose one question at a time, wait for the learner’s response, and then give focused feedback. For example: “Use only these notes. Ask one oral-exam question at a time. Wait for my answer before asking another. After each answer, identify what is accurate, what is missing, and which part of the notes supports that feedback. If the notes do not establish an answer, say so.”
- Have the learner answer aloud or in writing. Speaking aloud more closely resembles an oral examination; writing can make it easier to review the answer. The friend can take the role of examiner, track time, or note unclear explanations, while the learner—not the assistant—does the explaining.
- Check feedback against the source. Compare explanations, corrections, and suggested facts with the actual notes or assigned materials. If the assistant offers a claim the notes do not support, treat it as unverified and consult an authoritative course source or instructor.
- Repeat with varied questions. Ask for a mix of definitions, comparisons, applications, and follow-up questions, but keep the one-question-at-a-time rule. Use missed or uncertain topics to choose the next round of review.
Choosing a setup without assuming what the friend owns
The friend’s device, operating system, subject, and budget are unknown, so there is no evidence-based minimum specification or purchase recommendation here. First find out what hardware is already available and which model the intended workflow requires. Ollama offers desktop software for macOS, Linux, and Windows, but says local speed depends on hardware and large models can be slow without a strong GPU. Check Ollama’s download options and the requirements for the specific model before deciding whether a device is suitable.

In a 2024 announcement, Ollama described its Llama 3.2 1B and 3B text-only models as optimized for local use on mobile or edge devices. That is the vendor’s deployment description, not an independent test showing that a particular phone will deliver adequate speed or answer quality for viva practice. Ollama’s Llama 3.2 announcement gives the dated model context; it does not establish a universal device recommendation.
