No published evidence ranks AI visibility products by popularity or accuracy. The vendor and Google pages behind this comparison document features, not independent head-to-head tests. So this guide doesn’t crown a winner. It explains what Semrush’s AI Visibility Toolkit, Ahrefs Brand Radar and OtterlyAI say they measure, where every tool of this type has blind spots, and how to run a fair trial of your own. Google Search Console is covered as the first-party baseline. Feature sets, engine coverage and prompt counts change often, and the figures below reflect vendor pages as of October 2026.
What an AI visibility tool actually measures
These products run a set of prompts through AI engines, store the answers, and report how often your brand appears. Two observations are easy to confuse, and the difference matters when you read any dashboard:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Mention: your brand is named in an AI response.
- Citation: the response links to your website as a source.
Ahrefs defines the two this way in its AI visibility checker. A brand can be named without a link. A page can be cited without any evidence that someone clicked. Neither observation shows a visit, a conversion or revenue, so those need first-party analytics.

#1 Best Overall
| Product | Documented emphasis | Worth checking before you buy |
|---|---|---|
| Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit / Semrush One | Visibility score and trends, mentions, citations, cited pages and sources, geographic and platform breakdowns, missing prompts, and brand measures such as share of voice and sentiment. The help page says Visibility Overview draws on a prompt database of 317M+ AI queries, refreshed daily on a rolling basis. | Which features and prompt limits your specific plan includes. Likely appeal for teams that want AI reporting inside an established SEO suite. Sources: Visibility Overview, AI SEO metrics, product page. |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | 449M+ search-backed prompts across AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, plus separate custom prompt tracking. It distinguishes prompt-based indexes from search queries that trigger AI results in Google. The page describes question sets re-tested monthly, with a 90-day reporting window. | Whether the index fits your niche, and whether monthly re-testing is frequent enough for what you need to see. Likely appeal for teams that want to connect AI visibility to search demand and Ahrefs data. Source: Brand Radar. |
| OtterlyAI AI Search Analytics | Brand mentions, citations, sentiment, share of voice, competitor comparisons, prompt-level outputs and cited URLs across its named engines. It also describes shopping analytics and export, API, MCP and Looker Studio integration. | The workflow centres on running your prompt set and storing the answers. Compare required prompt volume, cadence, engine availability and actual plan limits. Source: feature page. |
| Google Search Console | First-party reporting on generative AI features in Google Search and Discover. | It covers Google’s own surfaces only. It is not a cross-engine brand monitor. Source: Google Search Central announcement. |
Why scores from different tools can’t be compared
The headline numbers vendors publish describe their own databases. Semrush cites 317M+ AI queries (current Visibility Overview help documentation, accessed 2026). Ahrefs cites 449M+ search-backed prompts (current Brand Radar documentation, accessed 2026). Neither is an independent estimate of market size, and neither shows that one tool is more accurate. A bigger index doesn’t guarantee that the sample represents your audience.
A visibility score depends on choices the vendor made:
Rank #2
- where the prompts came from (search demand, vendor-generated, or yours);
- which engines and surfaces were queried;
- how often questions are re-run and over what reporting window;
- how mentions, citations, share of voice and sentiment are defined and weighted.
Because these inputs differ, a 40 in one product and a 40 in another are unrelated numbers. No common standard or independent accuracy study was found among the sources reviewed.
Search-backed prompts versus custom prompts
These answer different questions. Ahrefs says its broad index is derived from search demand, and that custom prompts are a separate feature that begins accumulating data only after you set them up. Broad indexes suit market discovery: which brands and sources dominate AI answers in your category. A stable set of your own buyer questions suits trend tracking, because the same questions are asked every time. Most teams eventually want both, so check that a tool offers each and how the two are priced.
Rank #3
What these tools can miss
- Sampling error. A tracked prompt list is a sample. It may not match your audience’s real wording, country, language, time of day, account state or personalised results.
- Hidden variation. An aggregate score can mask large differences between platforms or individual prompts. Prefer tools that let you read the full answer text, see cited URLs and filter by date and platform.
- No outcome link. Mentions and citations don’t establish clicks, conversions or incremental revenue.
- No view inside Google. Google’s guidance for website owners states: “Be wary of third-party tools that promise ranking success or claim to use “internal” Google metrics. No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems.” (Google Search Central, AI optimization guide, accessed 2026-10-05.) A monitor observes outputs. It can’t reveal why Google chose them.
- No guarantee from eligibility. The same guide says ordinary SEO best practices still apply to generative AI features, that pages must be eligible for Google Search, and that meeting requirements doesn’t guarantee crawling, indexing or display. A tool showing you absent from an answer isn’t a technical diagnosis either.
Use Google’s first-party reporting as the baseline
In June 2026 Google announced dedicated Search Console reporting for generative AI features in Search and Discover. It states that the insights had rolled out to all websites worldwide by August 31, 2026 (Google Search Central). This data comes from Google rather than from sampled prompts, so it works as a reality check on what third-party tools report about Google surfaces.
Search Console doesn’t cover ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot or other engines, and it doesn’t measure what happens on your site afterwards. For engagement and conversions, use Google Analytics or your existing site analytics rather than inferring them from mention or citation counts.
Nine criteria for comparing platforms
| Criterion | What to ask |
|---|---|
| 1. Prompt source | Search-backed, vendor-generated or customer-configured? Can you build a custom set? |
| 2. Engines and surfaces | Which of ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot are covered on your plan? |
| 3. Geography and language | Does coverage include the countries and languages your customers use? |
| 4. Cadence and history | How often are prompts re-run, and how far back does data go? |
| 5. Evidence access | Can you read raw answers, cited URLs and the context around each citation? |
| 6. Competitive analysis | Are competitor comparison, sentiment and share of voice included, and how are they defined? |
| 7. Integrations | Does it connect to your SEO suite, exports, an API or BI tools? |
| 8. Plan limits and price | Prompt caps, seats, markets and add-ons. Confirm on the vendor’s current pricing page. |
| 9. Outcome linkage | Can you line visibility changes up against Search Console and analytics data? |
How to run a fair comparison yourself
Since no independent benchmark exists, test the tools on your own questions. This is a suggested method rather than a result from anyone’s testing.
Recommended Free Tools
- Write 20 to 50 buyer prompts. Mix category questions (“best X for Y”), comparison questions that name competitors, and problem-led questions your sales or support teams hear. Keep the wording fixed.
- Record the conditions. Note the engine, country, language and date for each check.
- Check a few answers by hand. Run a sample of the prompts directly in each engine and note whether you are mentioned, cited, or absent.
- Compare against each tool’s stored output. Open the full answer and cited URLs. Look for gaps: an answer the tool recorded that you can’t reproduce, a citation it missed, or an engine you need that it doesn’t cover.
- Repeat over several weeks. Watch how sampling and refresh cadence affect stability. A monthly re-test (as Ahrefs describes for its question sets) and a daily rolling refresh (as Semrush describes for its database) will show change at different speeds.
- Cross-check with first-party data. Compare movement in Search Console’s generative AI reporting and your analytics against what the tools claim.
Which situation points to which option
You already pay for an SEO suite
Start with the AI module from that vendor, since it may reuse your existing projects, competitors and reporting. Semrush and Ahrefs both describe AI visibility features tied to their wider platforms. Confirm that the module’s prompt limits and engines are included in your tier before assuming they are.
Best Value
You need to know what buyers in your category are seeing
Prioritise a broad, search-backed index with competitor and source analysis. Brand Radar’s description, built around prompts derived from search demand, is aimed at this use. Treat the size of any index as scope, not proof of representativeness.
You have a defined list of questions to track and report on
Prioritise custom prompts, stored answers, exports and integrations. OtterlyAI’s documentation emphasises prompt-level outputs and reporting connections. Ahrefs and Semrush also describe custom or tracked prompts, so compare caps and cadence rather than assuming a difference.
You mainly care about Google
Begin with Search Console’s generative AI reporting, which costs nothing extra. Add a third-party tool only when you need competitor context or other engines.
You can’t yet say what you’d do with the data
A free check, such as Ahrefs’ AI visibility checker, can show how mentions and citations appear before you commit to a subscription. Decide first what action a drop or gain would trigger, such as updating a page, fixing a source, or briefing a content team. If no action follows, the monitoring is unlikely to pay for itself.
