A decompiled result is an interpretation of compiled code, not a copy of the developer’s source tree, assets, comments, or build pipeline. Whether creating or sharing that result is lawful depends on where you are, how you obtained and accessed the game, what you do with the output, and the applicable license and laws.
What “decompiling a video game” means
Decompilation translates compiled program code into a higher-level representation, often pseudocode. A game binary contains machine instructions and may retain some metadata, but compilation ordinarily discards much of the structure and information that made up the original project. A decompiler therefore reconstructs a plausible representation from what remains; it does not simply retrieve the original source.

That distinction matters because “a game” may contain several different technical targets:
- Native code: compiled machine code for a platform’s processor, which conventional decompilers may represent as pseudocode.
- Managed bytecode: intermediate code produced for a runtime, which may preserve more structure than native code, depending on the language, compiler, and build settings.
- Scripting files and data: files that may be stored in readable, compiled, or proprietary formats. These are not necessarily part of the native executable.
- Assets: textures, audio, models, levels, and other content. Recovering or extracting these is a separate technical and legal issue from decompiling program code.
Protection schemes, platform, file format, and available metadata all affect what can be examined. There is no single process that decompiles every game or yields the same kind of output.

What AI-assisted decompilation can contribute
Conventional tools such as Ghidra can turn binary code into pseudocode, but the output can be hard to read, incomplete, or difficult to compile. Language models may help refine or explain that output and suggest higher-level interpretations. The 2024 paper LLM4Decompile: Decompiling Binary Code with Large Language Models describes model-assisted binary-to-source recovery and evaluates its methods on the paper’s benchmarks, including refinement of conventional Ghidra output.
This is best understood as assistance with analysis, not one-click source restoration. A model-generated function name or explanation is an inference unless corroborated by evidence. AI can make a fragment more legible without recovering the original naming, comments, architecture, assets, or project configuration.
Readability, build success, and behavioral fidelity are different
A readable reconstruction is useful, but readability does not show that it is correct. Code that recompiles is more concrete evidence, but it still does not establish that the rebuilt function behaves like the original for all valid inputs. A supplied test suite covers only the cases it contains.

A 2026 study, When LLM Decompilers Recompile More and Preserve Less, examined behavioral divergence among decompiled functions that passed every shipped test on the study’s input corpus. Chang Liu, Edward Raff, and Kristopher Micinski report 4.9% overall divergence among those candidates, and up to 13% for one evaluated system. These are results for the paper’s tested systems and corpora—not a universal error rate, and not a video-game-specific rate. The paper’s Decompile-Diverge method uses generated drivers and expanded fuzz inputs to look for differences that the shipped tests miss.
For a serious analysis, preserve the original binary, record assumptions, and compare the reconstruction’s behavior against observed behavior with tests broader than any bundled test set. Even extensive testing cannot by itself prove that every behavior has been recovered.

What a practical analysis can—and cannot—answer
If your question is “How do you decompile video games just in general?”, first make it more specific: are you trying to understand a function, inspect a file format, make an independent program interoperate, study preservation, or reproduce a playable game? The goal determines what needs analysis, and decompiling native code may not be the relevant step if the information you need is in a script, data file, or documented interface.
- Understanding behavior: decompiler output can provide a starting point for tracing logic, subject to uncertainty in the reconstruction.
- Interoperability: the task is to identify the functional information needed for an independently created program to work with another program. That is a specific technical goal and, in some jurisdictions, a specifically constrained legal category.
- Preservation or local play: the relevant technical and legal questions can include access controls, external services, institutional eligibility, and the exact scope of an applicable exemption.
- Modding: the game’s architecture, tools, files, and license terms matter. “Modding” is not itself a legal permission or a guarantee that decompilation is needed.
- Creating or distributing a replacement: this raises different questions from private study, especially if the project includes copied expressive code or assets, bypasses protection, or distributes a playable game.
The evidence available here does not establish a reliable success rate for reconstructing complete commercial games, nor a comparative whole-game benchmark across native binaries, managed bytecode, scripts, platforms, or protection schemes. Claims about a particular model or benchmark should not be read as proof that an arbitrary commercial game can be rebuilt as a faithful project.

There is no reliable blanket answer of “legal” or “illegal.” In the United States, copyright, anti-circumvention rules, contracts, and other laws are separate considerations. Relevant facts include whether you lawfully obtained the right to use a copy, whether you bypassed access controls or encryption, your purpose, what information or protected expression you copied, the license terms, and whether you keep, publish, or distribute the results.
The U.S. Copyright Office says: “The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), codified in part in Title 17, section 1201, of the United States Code, generally makes it unlawful to circumvent technological measures used to prevent unauthorized access to copyrighted works, including copyrighted books, movies, videos, video games, and computer software.” See the Office’s Ninth Triennial Section 1201 Proceeding, 2024 Cycle.
The interoperability provision is narrow
Section 1201(f) provides a conditional reverse-engineering provision for a person who lawfully obtained the right to use a copy of a program. It permits circumvention solely for the “sole purpose of identifying and analyzing those elements of the program that are necessary to achieve interoperability of an independently created computer program with other programs,” subject to the statute’s conditions and limits. The provision does not amount to general permission to bypass protections for any mod, to copy a game, or to distribute a circumvention tool. The full text is in 17 U.S.C. § 1201.

Some game exemptions are limited to specific circumstances
The Copyright Office’s 2024 rule includes narrow exemptions involving certain lawfully acquired games. One addresses restoring personal local play where the rights holder has ended required external-server authentication. Other provisions cover qualifying preservation by eligible libraries, archives, or museums under detailed conditions, including limits on making works available. These rules do not create blanket authorization to distribute a bypass, game binary, replacement server, or playable copy. The listed exemptions and conditions appear in 37 CFR 201.40.
Copyright, contracts, and fair use are not the same question
The Cornell Legal Information Institute’s overview of reverse engineering notes that the analysis is fact-specific and that contract and trade-secret issues may also arise. It summarizes Sega Enterprises Ltd. v. Accolade, Inc., 977 F.2d 1510 (9th Cir. 1992), in which intermediate copying to discover functional requirements for compatibility could qualify as fair use in the circumstances of that case. That decision is not a universal ruling that every decompilation, game mod, or distribution is fair use.

UK law has a statutory decompilation exception in section 50B of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988. A lawful user may decompile a program where doing so is necessary to obtain information needed to create an independent program that interoperates with the decompiled program or another program. The purpose and use of the information are constrained; this is not a general license to reproduce protected expression or distribute a decompiled game. See the official text of CDPA 1988, Part I, Chapter III.
This UK rule should not be assumed to apply elsewhere or to answer every question about copying, access controls, licenses, or distribution. The legal outcome for a real project requires checking the law that applies to the person, conduct, and territory involved.
Quick Recap
A checklist before starting or sharing results
- Define the goal. Write down whether you need to understand behavior, achieve interoperability, preserve access, modify a game, or build a replacement.
- Identify the target. Determine whether the relevant material is native code, managed bytecode, scripts, data, or assets; do not assume all require decompilation.
- Check access and terms. Establish how you obtained the copy, what access controls are present, and what the applicable license or contract says.
- Separate private analysis from distribution. Decide whether you will retain notes privately, publish code or findings, share files, commercialize a result, or distribute a playable build. These are not interchangeable uses.
- Validate technical claims. Label inferred code as inferred, preserve the original, and test beyond the cases that shipped with the binary. Passing tests is not proof of behavioral equivalence.
- Get jurisdiction-specific advice for consequential work. Laws and exceptions vary, and the legality may change with the access method, purpose, copied material, and distribution plan.
