Compute nodes execute model training; dedicated fabrics move gradients, parameters, control traffic, and storage data; storage tiers feed datasets and retain checkpoints; management services provision and monitor hardware; and a scheduler assigns complete resources to jobs. A sound design starts with those traffic and operational boundaries, then selects a reference architecture, scale increment, and facility plan that fit the workload.
What an AI training cluster contains
Training a large model repeatedly synchronizes work across accelerators. Every iteration can involve accelerator-to-accelerator communication inside a node, node-to-node communication across the cluster, reads from shared datasets, writes of checkpoints, and control messages from management services. If any one of those paths is undersized or unreliable, adding more GPUs may increase waiting rather than useful training.

NVIDIA’s description of DGX SuperPOD captures the integrated approach: “The DGX SuperPOD architecture is a combination of DGX systems, InfiniBand and Ethernet networking, management nodes, and storage.” That statement describes a particular NVIDIA reference system, not a universal recipe for every supplier. It is nevertheless a useful mental model: compute, data movement, persistence, operations, and scheduling must be designed together.
Compute nodes and accelerator topology
Compute nodes host the GPUs and the CPUs, memory, local storage, power delivery, and cooling needed to run training processes. The number of GPUs per node and the way they are connected determine how efficiently a job can exchange data within that node. Inter-node topology then determines how efficiently the same job scales out.

GPU count alone does not predict training performance. A model may be limited by memory capacity, collective-communication latency, input pipelines, checkpoint writes, or thermal and power limits. Node and GPU counts in NVIDIA’s B200 and GB200 references are building blocks for those designs, not cross-vendor benchmarks or sizing rules.
Separate the network by traffic purpose
Calling everything a “fast network” hides the failures that matter most. In the B200 reference design, four logical roles are identified: a compute fabric, a high-speed storage fabric, an in-band management network, and an out-of-band management network. Keeping these roles distinct makes congestion, fault domains, and security boundaries easier to reason about.
Compute fabric
The compute fabric carries accelerator-cluster traffic, including the synchronization and collective operations that connect GPUs within and across training nodes. Its topology, switch placement, link speed, and routing behavior should be evaluated against the parallelism strategy used by the training software. A fabric that is adequate for occasional distributed jobs can be unsuitable for sustained all-reduce traffic.

The storage fabric provides high-bandwidth access to shared storage and is independent of the compute fabric in the B200 design. That separation prevents large dataset reads or checkpoint bursts from competing directly with accelerator collectives. NVIDIA’s B200 component guidance specifies storage bandwidth of at least 40 GBps per DGX B200 system; this is a requirement in that reference architecture, not a general recommendation for every cluster.
In-band management network
In-band Ethernet connects users and cluster services. In the H200 description, this path reaches services such as Base Command Manager, Slurm, code repositories, and data sources. It supports normal job submission, software distribution, authentication, monitoring, and access to the systems that prepare and consume training data.

Out-of-band management network
Out-of-band management isolates device-management functions from production and user traffic. It gives operators a path to inspect or recover equipment when an operating system, driver, compute link, or workload is unhealthy. Treat it as an operational dependency: without it, a fabric or node fault can turn a software problem into a hands-on data-center visit.
| Network role | Primary traffic | Design purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Compute fabric | Accelerator and node-to-node training traffic | Low-latency, high-throughput distributed execution |
| High-speed storage fabric | Dataset reads and checkpoint writes | Shared-storage bandwidth independent of compute traffic |
| In-band management | User access and cluster services | Job, software, repository, and data-source connectivity |
| Out-of-band management | Device and infrastructure management | Isolation and recovery when production paths fail |
Design storage around workload behavior
One storage tier rarely serves every cluster function equally well. Training data often requires parallel reads by many workers, while checkpoints create large, synchronized writes. Metadata operations, small-file access, user home directories, and administrative services have different latency and durability patterns.

High-performance training storage
The B200 and H200 references describe high-performance storage for parallel I/O. It should sustain concurrent access from many training nodes without starving the compute fabric or causing workers to idle. Measure the behavior that the workload actually creates: aggregate throughput, read and write concurrency, latency under load, and checkpoint completion time.
User and enterprise storage
H200 guidance distinguishes user storage from the high-performance tier. User storage emphasizes metadata performance, IOPS, and enterprise capabilities such as checkpointing, with a secondary management path. This tier can support repositories, experiment artifacts, logs, team data, and operational files that should not consume the bandwidth budget reserved for the training path.
Checkpoint planning
Checkpointing is both a data-protection operation and a scheduling concern. A job that writes checkpoints too slowly may hold GPUs while it waits for storage, while a burst from many jobs can congest a shared system. Define checkpoint frequency, retention, restart expectations, and the path from compute nodes to persistent storage before selecting capacity.

Do not treat a published bandwidth figure as a promise for every workload. The B200 figure of at least 40 GBps per DGX B200 system belongs to that NVIDIA reference design and its assumptions. Filesystem layout, client count, data format, metadata pattern, and concurrent jobs determine observed results.

A scheduler allocates nodes and GPUs to jobs, enforces policies, queues work when resources are busy, and coordinates multi-node execution. It is the control point that converts a collection of available accelerators into predictable capacity for teams and projects.
Why multi-node training needs coordinated allocation
A distributed job needs a compatible set of GPUs at the same time. Starting on a partial allocation can leave processes waiting or force an inefficient topology. The scheduler therefore needs awareness of node boundaries, GPU resources, and the placement rules that the training stack expects. It also needs to account for reservations, priority, preemption policy, and failed or drained nodes.
Slurm in the NVIDIA reference configuration
NVIDIA’s SuperPOD FAQ identifies Slurm as an enterprise-proven scheduler for multi-GPU, multi-node batch processing. In that branded configuration, changing the scheduler—or changing the operating system, certified storage, or fabric topology—can affect whether the system remains qualified as an NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD. That is a support and certification constraint for the NVIDIA solution, not proof that Slurm is the only scheduler suitable for every organization.
Operational services around the scheduler
- Provisioning: install and maintain the operating system, GPU drivers, firmware, and approved software images.
- Identity and policy: map users and projects to quotas, partitions, reservations, and accounting.
- Monitoring: correlate GPU health, fabric errors, storage latency, thermals, and job state.
- Failure handling: drain unhealthy nodes, preserve diagnostic data, and return repaired capacity safely.
- Data access: make repositories, datasets, and checkpoint destinations reachable through the intended network paths.
Reference scales: keep generations separate
Published component counts illustrate how a reference design scales, but they are not universal procurement targets. The B200 and GB200 documents describe different generations and should not be merged into one “standard” unit.

Neither set of numbers should be used to infer equivalent performance, power, or facility requirements across generations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan power, cooling, racks, and cabling before ordering
At cluster scale, physical infrastructure is part of the architecture. GPU nodes, switches, storage, and management equipment consume rack space and power; high-density systems also impose cooling requirements. Cable lengths and routing affect which nodes can connect to which switches and how service access is maintained.
- Power: calculate sustained and peak demand for compute, networking, storage, and management equipment, including redundancy choices.
- Cooling: verify that the room and rack design can remove the heat generated by the target generation at the intended density.
- Rack layout: reserve space for the scalable-unit pattern, switch positions, service clearances, and future expansion.
- Cabling: map compute, storage, in-band, and out-of-band paths separately and label both ends for maintenance.
- Growth increments: decide whether the facility can add one node, one rack, or a complete scalable unit without creating stranded capacity.
Use the target generation’s own design guide for current rack, power, and facility numbers. A requirement documented for one NVIDIA architecture should not be presented as a current requirement for another.
A practical design sequence
- Characterize the workload. Record model size, data volume, training parallelism, expected job duration, checkpoint interval, and the mix of interactive and batch work.
- Choose the compute building block. Select the target GPU generation and node topology, then determine how many GPUs a normal job needs rather than starting from a headline cluster count.
- Map traffic paths. Draw compute, storage, in-band, and out-of-band networks as separate paths. Identify which services and failure modes belong to each one.
- Size storage behavior. Test or obtain validated figures for parallel reads, metadata, IOPS, checkpoint writes, retention, and recovery—not only raw capacity.
- Define scheduling policy. Establish partitions or queues, placement rules, quotas, reservations, priorities, and the process for draining failed nodes.
- Validate the support boundary. For a branded reference system, confirm that the selected operating system, scheduler, storage, and fabric topology remain within the documented qualification.
- Check the facility. Verify power, cooling, rack space, cable routes, network ports, and expansion increments before equipment delivery.
- Instrument acceptance. Require evidence for GPU health, fabric errors, storage performance under concurrency, checkpoint completion, and scheduler behavior with representative jobs.
Common design mistakes and their fixes
Buying GPUs before designing the fabrics
Symptom: GPU utilization falls as node count rises, despite sufficient accelerator capacity. Fix: model collective traffic and topology first, then size the compute fabric for the intended parallel jobs.
Putting datasets and checkpoints on an undifferentiated network
Symptom: training slows during data loads or checkpoint bursts. Fix: provide the high-speed storage path described by the target reference design and protect compute traffic from storage contention.
Best Value
Treating capacity as the only storage metric
Symptom: there is enough space, but workers wait on reads, metadata, or checkpoint writes. Fix: evaluate parallel I/O, metadata performance, IOPS, concurrency, and recovery objectives separately.
Changing a certified component without checking support
Symptom: a system no longer matches the vendor’s qualification or support assumptions. Fix: verify scheduler, operating system, storage, and fabric changes against the applicable NVIDIA support documentation before deployment.
Combining figures from different generations
Symptom: a plan uses B200 node counts with GB200 scalable-unit definitions or assumes comparable power and performance. Fix: keep every count tied to its exact generation and reference document.
How to compare candidate architectures
When evaluating two real designs, compare the dimensions that determine usable training throughput and operational risk:
- Compute: GPU count, memory, node-level topology, and the smallest practical allocation for a job.
- Networking: inter-node bandwidth and latency, fabric topology, path redundancy, and separation of storage and management traffic.
- Storage: aggregate throughput, parallel I/O, metadata and IOPS behavior, checkpoint performance, capacity, and recovery features.
- Operations: management-plane isolation, monitoring depth, firmware and image lifecycle, and failure-recovery procedures.
- Scheduling: multi-node placement, queue policy, accounting, reservations, and vendor support status.
- Facilities: power, cooling, rack layout, cabling, service clearance, and the size of the next expansion increment.
These axes help compare proposals without pretending that the cited NVIDIA documents constitute a neutral multi-vendor benchmark. Cloud-managed clusters, alternative storage systems, and schedulers require their own validated evidence and support terms.
Bottom line for a design review
Approve an AI training cluster only when the compute topology, traffic-specific fabrics, storage behavior, scheduler policy, support boundary, and facility capacity agree with one another. Use B200 and GB200 figures as generation-specific reference examples, label their assumptions, and validate the target design with representative multi-node jobs rather than extrapolating from GPU count.
