The Tool Desk

Throne One and Kohler Health Dekoda are marketed as wellness trackers, not diagnostic tests: their scores and alerts cannot confirm a disease or replace advice from a clinician.
How a toilet-mounted AI sensor works
These products attach to an existing toilet rather than replacing its plumbing. A sensor positioned over the bowl observes waste during use; software then looks for visible features and patterns over time. What a device can measure depends on its sensors and the company’s analysis. A displayed score is an interpretation of those inputs, not a direct medical measurement.

Throne One
Throne One clips to a compatible white toilet rim up to 2.25 inches wide. Its downward-facing vision sensor works alongside acoustic, ambient-light and motion sensors. The companion app reports stool consistency and frequency, hydration scores, urinary flow and longer-term trends. Throne lists Bluetooth 5.1 and dual-band Wi-Fi connectivity and says the battery lasts about 30 days; actual battery life can depend on use and conditions.

Kohler says Dekoda attaches to most toilet rims with an adjustable clamp and no tools. A person starts a private session using a fingerprint scan or the Kohler Health app. The device then passively analyzes waste and provides gut-health and hydration insights, including alerts for signs of blood. Kohler’s product description does not specify the sensor details or how those particular outputs are derived.

What the sensors can—and cannot—tell you
Computer vision can classify visible characteristics such as stool form, consistency and color, and track frequency. Other sensor inputs may help estimate patterns such as hydration or urinary flow. These are pattern-based wellness insights; neither a stool score nor a hydration trend establishes a medical condition. A blood-presence alert is not a diagnosis and cannot determine the cause of blood.
Throne explicitly describes its product as a general-wellness device, not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease. If you notice blood, persistent changes in bowel habits, pain, or another concerning symptom, contact a healthcare professional rather than relying on a toilet sensor to assess it.

What to check before buying
- Fit: Measure your toilet rim and compare it with the maker’s compatibility guidance. “Fits most” is not a guarantee for every toilet shape.
- Ongoing cost: Include any required membership in the total cost. For Throne One, the listed $399 hardware price is separate from the $6 monthly membership after three free months.
- Privacy controls: Find out where images and sensor data are processed, how long they are retained, how to delete an account or data, whether information is shared or sold, and who can access household records. A stated camera direction or encryption during cloud transmission does not answer all of these questions.
- Shared bathrooms: Check how the system separates household members and whether a session must be deliberately started. Kohler describes fingerprint or app authentication; the reviewed Throne information does not specify its user-identification process.
- Use case: Treat trends as optional wellness information. Do not use a device’s alert or lack of an alert to decide whether a symptom needs medical attention.
