AI Thought My Company Was a Typo. Here’s What I Measured.

When Chuan Peng (Gary), founder of Luxcerta, asked grounded Gemini what his company was, he says it treated the name as a likely typo for LuxCarta. Across ten answers, Gemini did not mention Luxcerta, cite luxcerta.com, or retrieve the site. On the same day, Google Search’s AI Overview described the company correctly. Peng’s account is a useful case study in how AI products can represent one business differently—and in why observations should not be mistaken for proof of cause.

What Peng tested—and what he counted

Peng says he tested five identity questions, including “What is Luxcerta?” and “What does luxcerta.com do?” He asked each question twice in a fresh conversation using Gemini with web grounding. He counted mentions of Luxcerta, citations of luxcerta.com, and retrieval of the site using plain string matching, rather than an AI-assisted judgment. Peng’s account reports these results:

Measure Reported baseline
Answers mentioning Luxcerta 0 of 10
Answers citing luxcerta.com 0 of 10
Answers retrieving the site 0 of 10

These are Peng’s measurements from a small, self-reported test, not independently reproduced findings. He says Gemini instead associated the name with LuxCarta and suggested the domain might be parked or used for phishing.

Different AI surfaces gave different answers

On the same day as the Gemini test, Peng says Google Search’s AI Overview described Luxcerta as an independent studio focused on GEO monitoring. That contrast is between two specific products and their retrieval systems; it does not establish that one product is generally more accurate than the other.

For a business owner, the practical lesson is to check each surface separately. A company may be recognized on one AI-powered search surface and missed or confused with another name on a different product. Peng’s example prompts are useful starting points, but results depend on the precise wording, date, product, and grounding settings.

What Peng changed, and what happened next

After the initial observations, Peng says he made several identity signals more consistent and easier to find:

  • Added Organization structured data in JSON-LD to the homepage.
  • Tightened the homepage meta description.
  • Updated a GitHub profile page to repeat the company definition and explicitly distinguish Luxcerta from LuxCarta.
  • Submitted a sitemap and requested recrawling through Search Console.

About a week later, he says Google’s AI Overview was giving a stable, accurate one-sentence description of Luxcerta, and the earlier LuxCarta association was no longer appearing on that surface.

The sequence does not show that any one change caused the improvement. Peng changed several things together, there was no control group, and the account concerns one brand over roughly a week. The observed stability was not proof that the result would persist. Treat these actions as steps he tried, not a guaranteed recipe for changing AI answers.

How to make an AI brand check more useful

Peng’s test illustrates why a count is easier to interpret when the measurement is clearly defined. If you check how AI products describe your business, record the details that let you compare results later:

  1. Name the surface and settings. Record the product, whether web grounding or search was enabled, and the date.
  2. Save the exact prompts. Include straightforward questions such as “What is [company]?” and “What does [domain] do?”
  3. Use fresh sessions consistently. Decide in advance how many separate conversations to run for each prompt.
  4. Keep the raw answers. Record whether the company was mentioned, whether its site was cited, and whether the site itself appeared in retrieved results. Define each count before reviewing responses.
  5. Repeat over time and across products. This can show whether an observation was limited to one run or surface, though it still does not identify what caused a change.

That approach separates what you observed from what you infer. A better answer after a site update is evidence of sequence; without an isolated change and an appropriate comparison, it is not proof that the update produced the result.

Why citations and recommendations can diverge

Peng also summarizes a separate survey of dental implant clinics in greater Taipei. He says he asked 15 real-user questions, with three fresh conversations per question, for 45 answers on each of ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. In his account, an answer could cite one clinic’s website while recommending another clinic, and the services’ recommendation lists barely overlapped.

The account provides a summary rather than the underlying dataset or enough detail to independently verify the survey. It is best read as another reported observation—not as a broad ranking of AI products or a measured estimate of how often citations and recommendations differ.
