AI Stocks Lose Steam as Capital Rotates Into Healthcare; Lilly and AbbVie Near Record Highs

AI-linked stocks pulled back on October 15, 2026, while investors moved toward healthcare and consumer shares. The shift reflects rising financing costs, concern about debt-funded AI infrastructure and a more cautious outlook for 2027—not proof that investors have permanently abandoned artificial-intelligence companies.

Eli Lilly was one of the session’s biggest winners after a Deutsche Bank upgrade. AbbVie was described as trading at or near a record high, although no exact record price or closing level was published.

What happened in the October 15 session

Reuters reported that the S&P 500 finished higher as money moved away from AI-linked technology shares and into healthcare and consumer companies. The index was still about 13% higher in 2026 after reaching a record high the previous week, showing that the market’s advance continued even as its leadership changed.

The Nasdaq, which has greater exposure to large technology and AI names, had fallen more than 4% from its recent record. That contrast is the clearest sign of an internal rotation: investors were reducing exposure to one group without broadly selling the entire market.

Healthcare and consumer winners

  • Eli Lilly rose more than 3% after Deutsche Bank upgraded the stock.
  • UnitedHealth gained 2.8% following a Deutsche Bank upgrade.
  • Walmart advanced 1.4% after the same bank’s rating actions.

An Associated Press market report on October 12 put the S&P 500’s year-to-date gain at 14%, versus Reuters’ approximately 13% figure on October 15. The difference reflects the separate publication dates and rounding, not necessarily a disagreement about the market’s direction.

Why investors are questioning AI stocks

Higher financing costs

AI development depends on enormous data centers, servers, power systems and networking equipment. When borrowing costs rise, the expense of building that capacity increases. That can reduce the present value investors assign to future earnings and make highly leveraged expansion plans harder to justify.

Jed Ellerbroek, a portfolio manager at Argent Capital Management, described the issue this way: “The cost to finance everything, whether it be a new single-family house or a giant data center, is going up, and that has implications for lots of stuff in the stock market.”

Debt exposure in the AI supply chain

Reports cited concern about debt among companies supplying or operating AI infrastructure. Dell and Hewlett Packard Enterprise fell sharply as investors reassessed how much borrowing may be needed to meet demand for AI servers and related equipment. A company can benefit from strong demand and still face pressure if the capital required to serve that demand becomes more expensive.

A cautious 2027 signal from TSMC

TSMC reported its sixth consecutive record quarterly profit, but its cautious outlook for 2027 added pressure to chip and server stocks. The combination matters because current earnings can remain strong while investors lower expectations for the next phase of growth.

What is known about Eli Lilly and AbbVie

Eli Lilly’s daily move

Lilly gained more than 3% on October 15 after Deutsche Bank upgraded the shares. That is a documented one-day move and does not, by itself, establish that the stock closed at an all-time high.

AbbVie’s record-high status needs qualification

A separate October 15 report from Business Bearings said AbbVie, Eli Lilly and Gilead Sciences were trading “at or near record highs.” For AbbVie, the strongest defensible wording is near record highs: the report did not provide an exact record price, closing level or percentage gain. It also supplied no evidence of a specific fund flow from Nvidia or another AI stock into AbbVie.

What the reports do not establish

  • They do not show that a permanent migration of capital from AI stocks into healthcare has occurred.
  • They do not provide a complete valuation comparison or current price-to-earnings multiples for AI and healthcare leaders.
  • They do not document the exact price at which AbbVie set or approached a record.

Is this a lasting rotation away from AI?

Not on the evidence from one trading session. The data support a tactical rotation toward companies viewed as less exposed to expensive infrastructure financing, while AI-linked shares absorbed profit-taking and valuation pressure.

A lasting change would require repeated sessions of broader market leadership, weaker forward guidance from AI companies or evidence that spending plans are being delayed. Conversely, falling borrowing costs, stronger 2027 forecasts or continued demand for AI capacity could restore technology leadership. The October 15 move should therefore be read as a change in market preference, not a confirmed end to the AI investment cycle.

What the move means for the S&P 500

The index’s resilience shows why a headline about falling AI stocks does not automatically mean the broad market is in a downturn. Healthcare and consumer gains offset technology weakness, allowing the S&P 500 to remain close to its record range.

For investors, broader participation can reduce dependence on a small group of technology leaders, but it also changes which risks matter. Market performance may become more sensitive to drug pipelines, healthcare reimbursement, consumer demand and defensive-sector earnings while financing conditions continue to pressure capital-intensive technology companies.

How to compare AI and healthcare leaders

The available reports support a framework for comparison, but not a complete valuation table. Exact multiples should be checked against a current, separately verified market-data source before making an investment decision.

Comparison factor AI-linked companies Healthcare leaders
Financing sensitivity Often high when growth depends on debt-funded data centers, servers or power capacity. Generally less tied to large infrastructure borrowing in the specific episode described.
Earnings visibility Strong recent demand can coexist with uncertainty about future capital spending and 2027 growth. Large companies may attract buyers when investors seek steadier or more defensive earnings, but the reports do not quantify that advantage.
Product or pipeline concentration Returns can depend heavily on sustained AI demand and a limited set of infrastructure beneficiaries. Drug and healthcare businesses carry their own product, regulatory and reimbursement risks.
Interest-rate sensitivity Higher rates can raise project costs and reduce the value of distant expected profits. Healthcare can benefit relatively when investors rotate defensively, although it is not immune to rate or policy changes.
Valuation Exact multiples were not supplied in the cited reports. Exact multiples were not supplied in the cited reports.

Signals to watch next

  • Whether AI-chip and server companies revise 2027 revenue, capital-spending or borrowing plans.
  • Whether higher financing costs continue to weigh on data-center construction and equipment demand.
  • Whether healthcare leadership broadens beyond a few large pharmaceutical and insurer stocks.
  • Whether the Nasdaq stabilizes while the S&P 500 remains supported by nontechnology sectors.
  • Whether future sessions confirm repeated outperformance by defensive and consumer groups rather than a single-day repositioning.
