AI SOC Agents vs. SOAR: What’s the Difference?

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

AI SOC agents are built for adaptive investigation and planning; traditional SOAR is built for predefined, repeatable execution. An agent can assemble context from several security systems, decide which investigative step to take next, and explain a proposed verdict. A SOAR playbook follows rules and actions that your team designed in advance.

They are not mutually exclusive. A practical security operations architecture often uses an agent to investigate and recommend a disposition, a deterministic playbook to perform approved actions, and an analyst to approve uncertain or high-impact changes.

What is the difference between an AI SOC agent and SOAR?

The central difference is how each system decides what to do. SOAR (security orchestration, automation and response) executes a known procedure: a trigger starts a versioned playbook, conditions are evaluated, and configured actions run in a set order. An AI SOC agent uses contextual reasoning and dynamic planning to choose investigative steps as evidence arrives. Microsoft describes SOAR playbooks as following “predefined workflows and rules,” while Google Cloud describes an Agentic SOC as using agents that can “reason, plan, and act dynamically.”

That distinction does not make one category a universal replacement for the other. A phishing response with stable steps is a good candidate for a playbook. An unfamiliar alert that requires correlating identity, endpoint, cloud and threat-intelligence data may need an agent to determine which questions to ask next. The same incident can use both: adaptive investigation first, deterministic remediation after an analyst or policy approves it.

The labels are also fluid. “AI SOC,” “agentic SOC” and “agentic SOAR” can refer to a product, a capability added to an existing platform, or an operating model for a security team. CrowdStrike, for example, calls Charlotte an “agentic SOAR” orchestration layer while retaining structured playbooks and adaptive AI-driven workflows. Evaluate the actual controls, integrations, evidence and action boundaries rather than assuming that a product name defines a separate category.

How traditional SOAR works

Predefined logic turns an alert into an action

A SOAR platform connects security tools and runs playbooks written by your team or supplied by a vendor. A playbook can receive an alert from a SIEM, enrich an indicator with threat-intelligence data, search an endpoint platform, open a case, notify an owner and request approval before isolating a device. Branches and conditions are explicit, so reviewers can inspect what will happen before the workflow is enabled.

This determinism is valuable when the procedure is stable and the consequence of a mistake is high. Teams can test a playbook against known cases, version changes, restrict permissions and measure whether each action completed. The limitation is maintenance: when a data field, API, detection rule or business process changes, the playbook must be updated and retested. A rigid workflow can also struggle when an alert does not fit the assumptions under which it was written.

Where SOAR is strongest

  • Repeatable containment, enrichment, ticketing and notification procedures.
  • Actions that require predictable ordering and an auditable change history.
  • High-volume tasks where the decision has already been made by a rule or analyst.
  • Environments that need tightly bounded permissions and approval gates.

How an AI SOC agent works

Context determines the next investigative step

An agent receives an alert and relevant context, then plans a sequence of queries or actions. It may correlate an identity event with endpoint telemetry, cloud audit records, email activity and threat-intelligence findings; decide that a missing data point is important; retrieve it through an available integration; and revise its assessment. The output should include the evidence used, the reasoning or explanation supplied by the system, and a proposed verdict or next action.

Google’s SecOps Agentic SOC pages describe a Triage and Investigation agent that gathers and enriches evidence, analyzes an alert and provides a verdict with explanations. Google also describes querying diverse sources through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Those capabilities depend on the data and permissions actually available in your environment: an agent cannot reliably reason over telemetry it cannot access, fields it cannot interpret or integrations that return incomplete results.

Where agents are strongest

  • Unfamiliar, branching or ambiguous alerts that do not map cleanly to one playbook.
  • Investigations that require connecting evidence across several tools.
  • Analyst assistance, such as summarizing a case and identifying the next useful query.
  • Situations where the path to an answer changes as new evidence is discovered.

An agent’s ability to choose a path does not prove that its conclusions are always correct or that it should act without review. Autonomy, tool access, confidence thresholds and rollback behavior must be defined for each deployment.

Decision method Contextual reasoning and dynamic planning across a task. Predetermined rules and playbooks. What decisions are made at runtime, and how are they constrained?
Best fit Unfamiliar or branching alerts and cross-tool evidence gathering. Repeatable, known response procedures. Which workflows are stable enough to encode, and which need contextual investigation?
Data and integrations Usable context and access across relevant sources; outputs should expose supporting evidence. Connections to security tools needed to execute established actions. Which data sources are covered, and can analysts inspect the evidence behind a conclusion?
Governance Explicit autonomy boundaries, approvals and audit records are required. Actions can be fixed, reviewed and approved in advance. Which actions are recommendation-only, approval-gated or autonomous?
Change and maintenance The investigation path can adapt, but integrations, prompts, policies and outcomes still need testing and oversight. Static playbooks require upkeep when conditions or APIs change. How are changes tested, versioned and rolled back?
Evidence of results Evaluate task-specific outcomes with a clear baseline and validation method. Measure execution reliability and workflow outcomes. What task mix, time window and validation support each performance claim?

These axes summarize how Microsoft, Google Cloud, Trend Micro and CrowdStrike describe the technologies. They are an evaluation framework, not a universal benchmark; implementations vary by product, edition, integrations and geography.

How a hybrid agent-plus-SOAR workflow operates

The most controllable design separates adaptive analysis from high-impact execution. Google describes combining dynamic agents that gather evidence and reason through alerts with deterministic enterprise playbooks, while keeping analysts in control of critical actions. A typical workflow looks like this:

  1. Ingest and normalize the alert. A SIEM, endpoint, identity, cloud or email control sends the alert and its available metadata to the investigation service.
  2. Gather context. The agent queries permitted systems for related users, devices, processes, domains, files, authentication events and prior cases. Integrations must return enough detail for the agent and analyst to verify the result.
  3. Plan and investigate. The agent selects additional queries based on what it found instead of following one fixed branch. It records the evidence and explains why each step was relevant.
  4. Propose a disposition. The output can be a benign, suspicious or malicious assessment, a confidence indication, a case summary and recommended next steps. Your team should define what evidence is required before a recommendation is accepted.
  5. Apply deterministic actions. A SOAR playbook can perform repeatable enrichment, ticket updates, notifications or approved containment steps. The playbook should receive a structured decision and enforce policy rather than trusting free-form text.
  6. Pause for approval when impact is material. Account disablement, host isolation, blocking a business-critical domain or deleting data should be approval-gated unless your risk policy explicitly permits autonomous action.
  7. Record and review. Store the alert, evidence, agent output, approvals, playbook version, API calls and final outcome. Feed confirmed errors and missed evidence into testing and workflow updates.

This arrangement gives an agent room to investigate while preserving the predictability and auditability of playbooks for consequential operations. Microsoft describes staged adoption from scripted automation and AI-assisted analysis toward more autonomous workflows as governance and operational maturity improve.

When to use an agent, a playbook or both

Choose a playbook for a stable procedure

Encode a workflow when the trigger, required data, decision criteria and action sequence are well understood. Examples include enriching an indicator in several systems, adding a case tag, notifying an on-call channel, collecting a standard endpoint package or requesting manager approval. The value is consistency: every execution follows the same tested path and produces comparable audit data.

Use an agent for an investigation that branches

An agent is more useful when the analyst must decide which evidence to gather next. An alert involving a new cloud service, an unusual identity pattern or a previously unseen combination of indicators may require several hypotheses. The agent can prioritize queries and summarize findings, but the team should still validate the evidence and define what it may do without approval.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Combine them for controlled response

Use the agent to triage and investigate, then hand a structured recommendation to a playbook. The playbook can enforce required fields, check policy, obtain approval and execute the approved action. If the agent cannot obtain sufficient evidence or produces conflicting signals, route the case to an analyst instead of forcing an automated verdict.

Governance controls an agentic SOC needs

Define an autonomy ladder

Classify each capability as recommendation-only, approval-gated or autonomous. Recommendation-only functions may summarize evidence or suggest queries. Approval-gated functions can prepare a containment action but require a named analyst or role to authorize it. Autonomous functions should be limited to low-impact, reversible operations with clear failure handling.

Limit access by role and tool

Use least-privilege service accounts, scoped API tokens and role-based access controls. Separate read access for investigation from write access for containment. Restrict which tools an agent can call, which environments it can affect and which data classes it may expose in a case summary.

Make every decision auditable

Log the original alert, retrieved evidence, prompts or policies that materially affected the decision, tool calls, approvals, playbook and agent versions, timestamps, and final outcome. An analyst must be able to reconstruct why an action occurred and who authorized it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test failure modes, not just successful cases

Test missing telemetry, stale indicators, contradictory evidence, API timeouts, duplicate alerts, prompt injection in retrieved content and an agent’s attempt to exceed its permissions. Confirm that the system fails closed for high-impact actions, surfaces uncertainty and can be rolled back. Trend Micro’s governance guidance emphasizes analyst involvement, access controls, regular testing and oversight; these controls remain necessary regardless of the product label.

Data and integration requirements

Integration breadth is not the same as useful context. Inventory the sources that matter to your investigations and verify what each connector returns: raw events, normalized fields, historical depth, asset identity, user identity, timestamps and response status. Ask whether the system can preserve the original evidence and show the query or API response behind a conclusion.

Check how the platform handles rate limits, connector failures, schema changes and partial results. An agent that silently receives incomplete data may produce a confident-sounding but unsupported assessment. A deterministic playbook should validate required fields and stop or escalate when a dependency fails.

How to adopt the technology without losing control

  1. Baseline current operations. Measure alert volume, analyst handling time, false-positive rate, escalation rate, containment time and playbook failure rate for a defined period. Record the task mix; an average across unrelated alert types will hide important differences.
  2. Classify workflows. Mark procedures as stable and repeatable, investigative and branching, or high-impact and approval-sensitive. Start with low-risk enrichment and analyst assistance rather than immediate autonomous containment.
  3. Select a narrow pilot. Choose one alert family with reliable telemetry and a clear success criterion. Run the agent in recommendation mode beside the existing process so analysts can compare evidence and outcomes.
  4. Build approval and rollback paths. Define who approves each action, what happens when evidence is insufficient, how to undo a change and how to disable the agent or connector quickly.
  5. Evaluate with representative cases. Include true positives, benign alerts, rare cases, missing data and adversarial inputs. Have reviewers assess both the final disposition and the evidence trail.
  6. Expand in stages. Move only validated tasks to approval-gated or autonomous execution. Version prompts, policies, connectors and playbooks, and retest after changes to detections, APIs or business processes.

Current examples and what their descriptions establish

As of October 13, 2026, the following named offerings illustrate the overlap between agentic and SOAR terminology. Their published pages describe capabilities and vendor claims; they do not establish that the products are equivalent or that one outperforms another.

Google SecOps Agentic SOC

Google’s Agentic AI for Security Operations FAQ and Agentic SOC product page describe a Triage and Investigation agent that gathers evidence, enriches alerts, analyzes them and provides a verdict with explanations. The product page also describes combining agents with deterministic playbooks for controlled remediation. Confirm the current integrations, packaging and availability for your region and edition.

Microsoft Security agentic AI

Microsoft’s “What Is Agentic AI in Cybersecurity?”, published June 18, 2026, contrasts security agents for detection, investigation and response with fixed SOAR playbooks. The guidance highlights guardrails, approval workflows, role-based access controls, auditing and staged adoption.

Trend Vision One Agentic SOAR

Trend Micro’s Agentic SOAR explainer, last updated October 23, 2025, describes AI-driven contextual threat investigation and response and recommends governance, analyst involvement, access controls and regular testing. Treat its product and performance language as vendor-authored descriptions and validate capabilities in your intended deployment.

CrowdStrike Charlotte Agentic SOAR

In its November 5, 2025 announcement, CrowdStrike describes Charlotte Agentic SOAR as an orchestration layer coordinating native, custom-built and third-party agents under analyst command. The announcement says it retains both structured playbooks and adaptive workflows. It is a product statement, not an independent assessment.

How to interpret published performance figures

Google’s current product page says its Triage and Investigation agent can reduce a typical 30-minute manual analysis to 60 seconds. Google’s current Security FAQ reports 50% faster mean time to resolution for organizations adopting Google SecOps with AI agents. Both pages were accessed October 13, 2026, and the cited passages do not provide enough methodology to generalize those figures to every environment. Treat them as Google-reported outcomes, not guarantees.

Published figure Publisher and context How to evaluate it
30 minutes to 60 seconds for a typical manual analysis Google Cloud current Agentic SOC product page; vendor claim. Ask which alert types, analyst tasks, data sources, exclusions and validation method produced the comparison.
50% faster MTTR Google Cloud Security current Agentic SOC FAQ; vendor-reported outcome. Request the baseline, organization mix, time window, definition of MTTR and independent validation.

For your own evaluation, report median and percentile handling times by alert type, investigation accuracy, escalation rate, unsafe-action rate, playbook completion, analyst override frequency and the cost of maintaining connectors and policies. Keep the baseline process and task mix visible so an improvement cannot be explained merely by routing easier cases to automation.

Questions to ask before buying or deploying

  • Which alerts can the system investigate end to end, and which require a human at every stage?
  • Can analysts inspect the evidence, queries and tool responses behind each recommendation?
  • What are the exact read and write permissions for each connector and service account?
  • How are approvals represented, enforced and logged?
  • Can a playbook reject an agent recommendation when required evidence is missing or policy conditions fail?
  • How are prompts, policies, connectors, agent versions and playbooks tested, versioned and rolled back?
  • What happens when an integration times out, returns partial data or changes its schema?
  • How are sensitive telemetry, prompts, outputs and case records retained and protected?
  • Which performance results are independently validated, and what baseline and task mix produced them?
  • What capabilities are included in the specific plan, region and edition you will operate?

Common mistakes and recovery steps

Assuming “agentic” means fully autonomous

Recovery: map every action to recommendation-only, approval-gated or autonomous status, then enforce that map with permissions and workflow gates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replacing tested playbooks before validating the agent

Recovery: run the agent in parallel or recommendation mode on representative cases, compare evidence and outcomes, and retain deterministic execution for stable procedures.

Measuring only a headline time saving

Recovery: segment results by alert type and include accuracy, unsafe actions, overrides, escalations, connector failures and maintenance effort.

Ignoring context quality

Recovery: inventory missing fields and inaccessible systems, improve normalization and identity correlation, and make insufficient evidence an explicit escalation condition.

Failing to plan for change

Recovery: test after detection, API, schema, policy or business-process changes; keep versioned configurations and a fast disable or rollback path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line: adaptive investigation and deterministic execution belong together

AI SOC agents differ from traditional SOAR primarily in decision method. Agents can adapt an investigation plan to the evidence they gather; SOAR playbooks execute predefined procedures consistently. The strongest operating model assigns each technology the work it can control: use agents to gather and correlate context, use playbooks to enforce repeatable and approved actions, and keep analysts responsible for uncertain or high-impact decisions. Judge any product by its integrations, evidence transparency, autonomy controls, auditability, testing discipline and independently meaningful results—not by whether its label says “AI SOC” or “agentic SOAR.”
