It can help locate an order, start a return, report a broken or missing item, or correct an order quantity. It is not infallible: Walmart warns that mistakes can happen, so verify the item, seller, quantity, price, fulfillment method and substitution setting before placing an order. For a disputed charge or policy conflict, the order record and Walmart Help Center are authoritative.
Returns generally have a 90-day window after purchase or receipt, but Marketplace sellers and categories such as oversized, hazardous, collectible, luxury or freight goods can follow different rules. Pickup and delivery substitutions also use different procedures: a pickup associate can remove an unwanted substitute before you leave, while a delivery driver cannot take one back. You must start a return from Purchase History.

What Walmart Sparky can and cannot do
A conversational shopping assistant
Walmart describes Sparky as an assistant that uses advanced AI models to interact conversationally, understand shopping needs, suggest products, answer questions and make recommendations based on preferences. In practice, that makes it useful for natural-language requests such as finding a particular size, comparing features, or narrowing a large product list without building a search query yourself.
Sparky is accessed in the Walmart app by customers signed in to U.S. accounts. Availability, account permissions and the actions Sparky can perform can change, so the controls shown in your account take precedence over a description of the service.

Order-service tasks
Sparky is also intended to act as a service interface. Daniel Danker, Walmart’s Executive Vice President for AI Acceleration, Product and Design, said on January 13, 2026 that customers use it when they cannot find an order, need to return something, receive a broken item, or need to correct an order quantity. His example was an order in which a customer bought one item but meant to buy two.
Those capabilities do not remove the need to check the underlying order. Walmart’s Sparky help article says, “While Sparky is designed to be as accurate as possible, mistakes can happen.” Treat an AI response as a starting point: open the order, check the line item and seller, and use the Help Center if the proposed action does not match the policy or your receipt.
What to check before you submit an AI-assisted order
Conversational recommendations can make discovery faster, but the final checkout screen controls what you actually buy. Use this verification sequence immediately before placing the order:

Similar listings can have nearly identical names.
- Seller: Identify whether Walmart itself or a Marketplace seller is supplying the item. The seller determines many return and customer-service rules.
- Quantity: Check each line’s quantity rather than relying on what you asked Sparky to do in conversation.
- Price and fees: Verify the displayed item price, delivery or pickup fees, taxes and any promotion attached to that specific listing.
- Fulfillment method: Make sure the line is marked for pickup, delivery or shipping as intended. Substitution procedures differ for pickup and delivery.
- Substitution preference: Review whether substitutions are allowed and any size or price limits shown for the order.
- Delivery details: Confirm address, time window and contact instructions. Save the order number after submission.
Keeping a screenshot of the confirmation can help if the displayed item, price or quantity later differs from what you approved.

How to find an order or correct a missing or wrong item
Use the Missing or Incorrect Items path
For an item that is absent, damaged, or different from the order, open Walmart’s Your Order help area and choose Missing or Incorrect Items. The same workflow can be reached through Purchase History in the app or on Walmart.com, depending on the account interface. Select the affected order and line item rather than reporting the entire order when only one product is wrong.
Have these details ready:
- Order number and delivery or pickup date.
- Exact item name, size or model and the quantity ordered.
- What arrived, including the substitute or incorrect quantity.
- Photos of packaging, labels, damage or the delivered item when relevant.
- Delivery instructions, drop-off location and any discrepancy between the tracking record and what you received.
Walmart’s Help Center also separates paths for canceled, delayed, not-received and undeliverable orders. Choose the status that matches the order record; a missing item inside a delivered order is not the same case as an order that never arrived.
When Sparky’s answer conflicts with the order
Do not repeatedly retry an AI instruction that contradicts the receipt, seller information or published policy. Capture the conflicting response, return to the order record, and contact Walmart Help Center support. The agent can review the transaction and apply the appropriate missing-item, cancellation, delivery or return process.
Walmart’s 90-day return rule and its limits
Standard window
Walmart’s return policy, updated October 9, 2026, generally gives customers 90 days after purchase or receipt to return an item unless an exception applies. Use a receipt or the Walmart.com or Walmart Business order number. Refunds generally go back to the original form of payment.

The 90-day period is a general rule, not a promise that every item can be taken to a store. Before sending anything back, open the order’s return instructions and read the item-specific eligibility, condition and shipping requirements.
Walmart-sold and Marketplace-sold items

If you cannot tell who sold the item, open the order details before choosing a return method. Treating a Marketplace purchase as a Walmart-sold item can send the package to the wrong destination or delay resolution.
Categories with special restrictions
Some oversized, hazardous, collectible, luxury or freight items may not be returnable to a Walmart store. The policy can require a carrier pickup, a seller-approved label, special packaging or another method. A return button that is missing or limited is a signal to read the item instructions and contact support instead of bringing the product to a store unannounced.

The policy states that refunds generally go to the original form of payment. It does not establish one universal posting time that applies to every card, bank, digital wallet, seller or return method. Walmart must first receive or approve the return according to the applicable workflow; then the payment provider can take additional time to display the credit.

To investigate a refund that is not visible, check the order’s return status, confirmation messages and the payment account used at checkout. Keep the return confirmation and any carrier tracking. If Walmart shows the refund as issued but the original payment account does not show it, ask the payment provider to trace the credit; if Walmart has not approved or received the return, use the order’s Help Center case instead.
Do not assume that declining a substitution, canceling a line or reporting a missing item uses the same refund event as a normal mailed return. The order record identifies which adjustment was made and whether a separate return is required.

Pickup substitution
For a pickup order, inspect substitutions before leaving the store. If you do not want the replacement, tell the store associate. The unwanted item can be removed from the handoff rather than taken home and returned later. Confirm that the final receipt reflects the items you accepted.
Delivery substitution
For delivery, you can accept, decline or return a substitution, but the driver cannot remove an unwanted item at the door. If the item is already delivered and you do not want it, open Purchase History in the Walmart app or on Walmart.com and start the return for that item. Follow the displayed label, drop-off or pickup instructions.
Keep the substitute in the condition required by the return instructions until the request is approved. Photograph the item and its packaging if the replacement is damaged, materially different or the wrong quantity. The driver’s inability to take it back does not prevent a return; it simply means the return must be initiated through the order system.
Accepted versus declined

Choosing self-service, Sparky or a human agent
Use Sparky when you need conversational help finding a product, understanding an order or beginning a routine service request. Use the order’s standard return controls when the item is clearly eligible and the seller and fulfillment method are known. Escalate to Walmart Help Center support when any of these conditions apply:
- The item is from a Marketplace seller and the return instructions are unclear.
- The product may be oversized, hazardous, collectible, luxury or freight-restricted.
- The order shows delivered, but an item is missing or the quantity is wrong.
- The AI response conflicts with the order record or policy.
- A refund is marked issued but cannot be located in the original payment account.
- The order is canceled, delayed, not received or marked undeliverable and the automated path does not resolve it.
Give the agent one order number and one precise issue at a time. State the item, quantity, seller, fulfillment method and requested remedy. This reduces the chance that a valid return is opened for the wrong line.

Can you shop Walmart through ChatGPT?
On October 14, 2025, Walmart announced a partnership with OpenAI for shopping through ChatGPT using Instant Checkout. The announcement presents this as a future integration; it does not establish universal availability, a launch date for every customer, or affiliate and commission terms. A ChatGPT shopping conversation should therefore be treated as available only when the feature is visibly enabled for your account and region.
Walmart’s announcement also said its AI applications were cutting customer-care resolution times by up to 40 percent and that AI-enhanced product catalogs reduced fashion-production timelines by up to 18 weeks. Those are Walmart-reported corporate results, not a guarantee that a particular return, refund or order correction will be completed within a stated time.
If a checkout option appears in ChatGPT, verify that the final Walmart order record contains the correct seller, item, quantity, price, fulfillment method and substitution preference. For post-purchase problems, use the Walmart order number and Walmart’s own help workflow even if the order began in another interface.
A practical checklist for an order problem
- Open the exact order in Purchase History.
- Identify the affected line, seller and fulfillment method.
- Decide whether the issue is a missing or incorrect item, substitution, cancellation, delay, non-delivery or ordinary return.
- Photograph the item, packaging and delivery evidence when damage or a mismatch is involved.
- Use the matching self-service path, such as Missing or Incorrect Items or Start a Return.
- Read the item-specific instructions, especially for Marketplace, oversized, hazardous, collectible, luxury or freight goods.
- Save the confirmation, label and tracking information.
- Escalate through Walmart Help Center support if the automated answer conflicts with the receipt, policy or refund status.
The key distinction is not whether AI was involved in shopping. It is which seller supplied the item, how it was fulfilled, whether a substitution was accepted, and which return exception applies. Those details determine who handles the case and what you should do next.
