AI shopping agents combine structured product feeds, merchant websites, third-party metadata, user intent, and safety policies to recommend products and sometimes complete a purchase. For shoppers, that means a convenient conversation rather than a list of links. For merchants, visibility depends on accurate catalog data, dependable availability and shipping details, credible review signals, and support for newer agent-commerce protocols. A displayed price or review summary is useful evidence, not a guarantee: verify the final price, taxes, delivery, stock, returns, and seller at checkout.
What an AI shopping agent does
An AI shopping agent interprets a natural-language request such as “find a quiet laptop under a certain budget” or “reorder the detergent I bought last month.” It translates the request into product attributes, searches connected catalogs and public information, filters results against constraints, and explains trade-offs in conversational language. Depending on the service and merchant integration, it can compare products, build a cart, apply a loyalty benefit, and hand the transaction to checkout.

The agent is not working from one universal database. It assembles a view of a product from several inputs:

- Merchant websites: product pages, policies, brand information, and details that help answer questions about fit, compatibility, or use.
- Third-party metadata and public reviews: information used to enrich descriptions and identify recurring customer feedback.
- User intent and model context: budget, location, preferences, previous conversation, and the meaning of ambiguous terms.
- Safety and policy systems: checks that can restrict, demote, remove, or ban products and sellers that violate platform rules or applicable law.
Because each source can change at a different time, an agent’s answer is a current representation of available data, not a permanent product record.

How product data enters ChatGPT, Google, and other systems
Structured feeds are the foundation
OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce documentation describes product feeds as the structured data ChatGPT uses to index products and understand their attributes. Required fields are intended to support accurate display of core facts such as price and availability. Recommended fields can improve matching, ranking, and trust by supplying richer media, review information, and performance signals.
Google Merchant Center remains the central hub for product data on Google shopping surfaces. Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) adds a way for a participating retailer to expose selected, real-time catalog information to an agent. A retailer that supports UCP’s Catalog capability can let an agent request current variants, inventory, and pricing instead of relying only on a periodically synchronized feed.
Amazon’s Alexa for Shopping combines catalog information with conversational discovery, comparison, deal and price-history features, cart building, and purchase completion. The exact experience depends on the product, account, merchant, and market.

Catalog fields that affect what shoppers see
| Data area | What to provide | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Stable product and variant identifiers, brand, model, and parent-child variant relationships | Prevents duplicate or merged listings and lets an agent distinguish sizes, colors, capacities, and bundles. |
| Core copy | Specific title, accurate description, category, specifications, and compatibility information | Improves matching to a shopper’s wording and reduces incorrect attribute assumptions. |
| Media | Clear product images and other supported rich media | Helps shoppers evaluate appearance, dimensions, included parts, and differences between variants. |
| Price | Current amount, currency, country configuration, sale terms, and applicable variant price | Allows an agent to compare offers without confusing currencies or showing a parent product’s price for a more expensive variant. |
| Availability | In-stock, out-of-stock, preorder, or backorder status synchronized with the selling system | Stops an unavailable item from being presented as immediately purchasable. |
| Shipping and returns | Shipping price, delivery information, destinations, and return policy | Many “best deal” decisions change when delivery cost, timing, or return restrictions are included. |
| Reviews | review_count and store_star_rating where supported, with accurate aggregation |
Supplies machine-readable trust signals while keeping review facts separate from generated interpretation. |
OpenAI’s product schema includes fields for review count, store star rating, shipping price, and country configuration. Supplying a field does not guarantee that it will be displayed or that a product will rank first; it makes the underlying fact available for systems that use it.
Are AI shopping prices live and accurate?
They can be useful and recent, but they are not automatically guaranteed to be live or the lowest. OpenAI says displayed prices come from third-party providers. Its shopping guidance warns that an initial price may reflect the first merchant found rather than the cheapest offer, and that merchant changes to price or shipping can take time to appear.

A feed value is therefore best understood as a timestamped catalog observation. A retailer connection using UCP’s Catalog capability is designed to let an agent retrieve real-time variants, inventory, and pricing when necessary, but support is retailer-dependent and rollout is still evolving.
At checkout, confirm:
- the exact variant, quantity, and seller;
- item price, discount eligibility, taxes, and currency;
- shipping cost and promised delivery date;
- stock status and any backorder or preorder condition; and
- return, warranty, subscription, and cancellation terms.
Google said in a November 13, 2025 announcement that its Shopping Graph contained 50 billion product listings and that 2 billion listings were updated every hour. Those figures describe Google’s system and should not be generalized to every AI shopping service.
How reviews and ratings are used
ChatGPT may create simplified product titles and summaries of public reviews. OpenAI describes these summaries as a way to highlight common likes and dislikes, while explicitly stating that the reviews and ratings are not verified by OpenAI. A fluent summary can therefore be directionally helpful without proving that every quoted detail, review, or rating is authentic, current, or representative.
Merchants should publish accurate review counts and ratings in supported feed fields, identify the source and aggregation method where required, and avoid claims that cannot be substantiated. A high star rating with a very small review count should not be presented as equivalent to a heavily reviewed product. Shoppers should open the merchant or review source when a purchase decision depends on a specific complaint, safety issue, or long-term reliability claim.
Why one merchant appears before another
OpenAI lists several factors that can affect which products and sellers ChatGPT surfaces:

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Relevance: how closely the product matches the wording, constraints, and context of the request.
- Availability: whether the requested item and variant can actually be obtained.
- Price: the offer represented in the data at the time of retrieval, including the limitations of delayed updates.
- Quality: product and seller signals available to the system.
- Seller identity: whether the merchant is the maker or primary seller rather than an indistinct reseller.
- Structured metadata, model context, and safety policies: additional signals used to interpret the request and filter results.
OpenAI states: “Product results are selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads, nor influenced by any OpenAI partnerships.” That describes product-result selection, not every commercial feature that may appear around a shopping experience. Labels and the set of options shown can also change when Instant Checkout is available.
There is no permanent ordering formula for merchants to target. Ranking behavior can evolve as models, policies, feeds, and user context change. Improving completeness, accuracy, freshness, and customer experience is more durable than trying to exploit one observed position.
What merchants should do to appear reliably
- Keep one canonical catalog. Use a single source of truth for product, variant, price, stock, shipping, and return data, then distribute it to each required channel.
- Assign stable identifiers. Keep product IDs and variant IDs unchanged across updates. Preserve clear relationships between a parent product and its size, color, capacity, or bundle variants.
- Write attribute-rich titles and descriptions. Put the differentiating facts a shopper actually asks about—model, dimensions, compatibility, material, quantity, and condition—in structured fields instead of relying on marketing language.
- Normalize money and geography. Send the correct currency, country configuration, tax treatment where supported, and destination-specific shipping rules. Do not reuse a domestic price for another market.
- Synchronize availability. Update stock quickly enough that an agent does not recommend an item that has sold out. Represent preorder and backorder states explicitly.
- Publish delivery and returns. Include shipping prices, destinations, delivery estimates, return windows, exclusions, and restocking charges where the channel supports them.
- Supply review signals honestly. Maintain accurate
review_countandstore_star_ratingvalues and retain transparent sourcing for any aggregated rating. - Use complete media. Provide clear images and supported rich media that show the product, packaging, important dimensions, and variant differences.
- Monitor diagnostics. Review feed errors, rejected attributes, policy disapprovals, price mismatches, broken variant links, and sudden availability changes.
- Keep content lawful and policy-compliant. OpenAI says merchants are responsible for compliant product content and may remove or ban violating products or sellers. The same principle applies to every channel’s policy system.
A feed improves an agent’s understanding; it does not guarantee inclusion, a particular ranking, or a sale.
What UCP and agentic checkout change
UCP is Google’s open protocol for agent-to-merchant communication. Its scope spans discovery, catalog access, cart operations, identity linking, checkout, and post-purchase support. The goal is to reduce one-off integrations so an agent can perform a consistent set of commerce actions with participating merchants.
In its March 19, 2026 update, Google described three capabilities:

- Catalog: retrieving selected real-time variants, inventory, and pricing from a retailer’s catalog where necessary.
- Identity Linking: connecting a shopper’s account so benefits such as loyalty pricing or free shipping can be recognized.
Google named Commerce Inc, Salesforce, and Stripe as partners implementing UCP in the future. Partner participation, merchant eligibility, and consumer access are rollout-dependent; a protocol announcement is not a promise that every retailer can enable every capability immediately.
Google’s Business Agent uses information from a company website plus Merchant Center product and brand data to answer customer questions. Google said conversational Business Agent availability began in 2025 in the United States, Canada, Australia, and India. Availability and feature coverage can vary by market and account.
Agentic checkout can shorten the path from recommendation to purchase, but it raises the importance of identity, payment authorization, taxes, fulfillment, cancellations, refunds, and post-purchase support. Merchants should treat those operational systems as part of catalog readiness, not as a separate afterthought.
How Alexa for Shopping differs
Amazon unified Rufus and Alexa+ under the Alexa for Shopping experience. Amazon reported that Rufus was used by more than 300 million customers in 2025, in an announcement made in 2026. Alexa for Shopping supports natural-language questions, shopping guides, product and category insights, dynamic comparisons, up to one year of price history, deal finding, cart building, and routine purchases.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAmazon also documents monetization inside the conversational experience, including Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands prompts, conversational ads, transaction completion, and closed-loop measurement. Amazon Ads describes this direction plainly: “It’s not a future state; it’s a current state.” Ad eligibility, geography, account requirements, and available formats must be checked before a merchant plans a campaign.
This creates an important distinction: organic product selection and paid conversational placements are different systems. A sponsored prompt can increase visibility without proving that the product is the best match, the cheapest offer, or the highest-quality choice.

How shoppers can check an AI recommendation
- Ask the agent to show the merchant, seller, variant, price, and update context when available.
- Open the merchant’s product page and match the model number, size, color, capacity, and included accessories.
- Recheck shipping destination, delivery date, taxes, and return conditions.
- Read the underlying reviews for claims that matter to safety, durability, fit, or compatibility; do not treat a generated summary as verification.
- At payment, confirm the final total and seller before authorizing the order.
Common failure modes and fixes
The agent shows an old price
Check the feed’s last update, provider synchronization, sale dates, currency, and shipping rules. Correct the canonical catalog first, then allow the channel’s update cycle to process the change. A UCP Catalog integration can provide a live lookup where the retailer supports it.

A variant is missing or merged with another
Verify stable variant IDs, parent-child relationships, option names, images, and variant-level prices and stock. Avoid putting multiple materially different products behind one ambiguous identifier.
A product appears unavailable after a recommendation
Compare the catalog’s availability timestamp with the warehouse or commerce system. Represent preorder and backorder states explicitly and shorten synchronization intervals for fast-moving inventory.
Review sentiment looks wrong
Inspect the source reviews, review count, rating aggregation, and product identity. Correct duplicate, incentivized, or mismatched review data and avoid unsupported superlatives in feed copy.
Traffic arrives but conversion is poor
Look for surprises after the click: shipping cost, taxes, delivery time, subscription terms, return restrictions, or a seller different from the one the shopper expected. Improve those details and measure the path from impression to product view, cart, checkout, and completed order.
What to measure
Merchant reporting should connect catalog quality to commercial outcomes. Track feed acceptance and policy errors, attribute completeness, price and stock mismatch rates, impressions, product-detail visits, cart additions, checkout starts, completed orders, cancellations, returns, and support contacts. Separate organic recommendations from sponsored prompts, and record the market, device, variant, and timestamp so a later price or availability change can be explained.
