There is no single “AI security scanner.” The right choice depends on whether you need code and supply-chain analysis, adversarial testing of model behavior, runtime monitoring, or a combination. Start by mapping your architecture and threats, then compare each candidate’s test method, lifecycle integration, evidence quality, data handling, and operational limits. OWASP’s GenAI Security Project landscape is useful for finding tools, but it is neither comprehensive nor an endorsement.
What does “AI security scanner” include?
The term covers several different jobs that are often marketed together. Comparing a static code scanner with an AI red-team harness as if they were interchangeable will produce a misleading buying decision.

| Capability | What it examines | Typical output | Questions to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Code and supply-chain scanning | Application code that calls models, model-related dependencies, AI integrations, and sometimes MCP servers or tools | Rules, findings, affected files or components, and remediation guidance | Which languages, frameworks, model SDKs, dependencies, and MCP implementations are supported? Does scanning run locally and in CI? |
| Adversarial testing and red teaming | Model and application behavior under hostile prompts, retrieved content, multi-turn conversations, and tool calls | Reproducible attack cases, transcripts, pass/fail results, and severity context | Are scenarios curated, generated, adaptive, or all three? Can tests exercise state, memory, agents, and tool arguments? |
| Runtime monitoring and protection | Live requests, responses, data movement, agent actions, and policy violations | Alerts, blocked actions, audit records, and operational dashboards | What traffic is inspected? Can controls act before a tool call or data transfer? What data is retained and for how long? |
A platform may offer more than one capability, but a feature list does not prove that every function is implemented equally well. Ask for architecture-specific demonstrations, test documentation, and sample findings rather than assuming that a directory listing establishes coverage.
How should you map the system before comparing tools?
Write down every asset and trust boundary the scanner must understand. A basic chatbot, a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) service, and an autonomous agent have materially different attack surfaces.

- Application code: orchestration, authentication, authorization, logging, prompt construction, and output handling.
- Data ingestion: documents, connectors, user uploads, parsers, and indexing jobs.
- RAG store: embeddings, metadata filters, tenant boundaries, and the content returned to the model.
- MCP servers and tools: tool schemas, credentials, network access, side effects, and argument validation.
- Agent state: memory, plans, task queues, inter-agent messages, and persistence between sessions.
- Production channels: chat, API, batch jobs, email, browser automation, and human approval steps.
Mark which components are public, which contain sensitive data, and which can take consequential actions. Then require every candidate to state exactly which of those components it can inspect or exercise. “AI application security” without an asset boundary is too broad to compare.
Which threats should an evaluation cover?
Build a threat matrix from the system’s actual behavior. OWASP red-teaming material identifies prompt injection, indirect prompt injection, jailbreaks, sensitive-data leakage or exfiltration, excessive agency, and misuse of tools or actions as core scenario families.
| Scenario | What to test | Evidence a useful result should contain |
|---|---|---|
| Direct prompt injection | User attempts to override system instructions, reveal hidden context, or change task priorities | Exact conversation, model and policy configuration, successful or blocked outcome, and the control that responded |
| Indirect prompt injection | Instructions embedded in retrieved documents, web pages, files, or tool results | Source item, retrieval path, model response, and whether untrusted content was treated as an instruction |
| Jailbreaks | Multi-turn or transformed requests designed to bypass safety and policy controls | Complete turn sequence and the policy decision at each stage, not only the final prompt |
| Data leakage and exfiltration | Attempts to expose secrets, personal data, system prompts, tenant data, or protected documents | Data classification, redacted proof, destination, and whether the transfer was prevented |
| Excessive agency | Whether an agent can act beyond its intended scope or without approval | Permission set, attempted action, approval state, and resulting side effect |
| Tool and action misuse | Forged or manipulated tool arguments, dangerous sequences, privilege escalation, and unsafe destinations | Tool name, validated arguments, identity used, side effect, and rollback information |
For a chatbot, direct and indirect input paths plus sensitive-data handling may be sufficient. A RAG system must treat retrieved text as untrusted input and test cross-tenant and secret exposure. An agent needs tests for permissions, tool arguments, state, memory, and transfers between components.
Why prompt-only testing misses agent failures
A prompt can look harmless while the workflow behind it performs an unsafe action. OWASP’s 2025 reference guide highlights agent-specific risks such as goal hijacking, tool misuse, memory poisoning, and inter-agent deception, and notes that prompt-injection tests alone cannot fully exercise them.
Goal hijacking
Check whether content from a document, tool, or another agent can replace the user’s approved objective. The test should preserve the original goal, introduce conflicting instructions, and verify that the agent asks for clarification or refuses the change.
Tool misuse
Attempt calls with unauthorized parameters, alternate identities, unexpected destinations, and sequences that become dangerous only when combined. A passing result should show authorization and argument validation before execution.

Memory poisoning
Seed persistent memory with false or hostile instructions, then start a later task. Verify provenance, expiration, tenant isolation, and a way to remove or quarantine the poisoned entry.

Inter-agent deception
In multi-agent systems, make one component send misleading status or fabricated evidence to another. The scanner should reveal the message path and whether the receiving agent independently verifies high-impact claims.
How do scanner testing methods differ?
Method determines what a tool can find and how much engineering effort a result requires.
| Method | Strengths | Blind spots to ask about |
|---|---|---|
| Static rules and code analysis | Fast feedback in pull requests; useful for insecure model calls, exposed secrets, unsafe tool wiring, and dependency issues | Cannot prove how a model behaves at runtime; may miss configuration assembled dynamically |
| Curated attack scenarios | Repeatable regression tests with known intent and expected outcomes | Coverage may age as models, prompts, and defenses change; ask how scenarios are maintained |
| Generated or adaptive adversarial tests | Explores variations and multi-turn paths that fixed tests do not include | Results can be nondeterministic; require seeds, transcripts, model versions, and replay support |
| Live-traffic observation | Shows what users and agents actually do in production and can support blocking or alerting | Privacy, latency, sampling, and retention constraints; monitoring is not a substitute for pre-release testing |
Ask whether tests can run against your exact model provider, orchestration framework, retrieval layer, and tool stack. Require multi-turn support when the failure depends on conversation history. For adaptive testing, insist on a replayable case so developers can verify a fix.
Where should the scanner fit in the lifecycle?
Compare lifecycle placement rather than counting integrations. A useful program normally combines several checkpoints.
Recommended Free Tools
- Local development: a CLI or library that a developer can run against a prompt, code change, or fixture.
- Pull request and CI: deterministic checks that fail on agreed thresholds and attach evidence to the build.
- Pre-release evaluation: a larger scenario suite against the candidate model, prompts, retrieval corpus, and tools.
- Deployment controls: policy checks for configuration, identities, network destinations, and approval gates.
- Production monitoring: interaction scanning, behavioral detection, runtime protection, and activity governance.
For each stage, identify who receives the result and what action follows. A dashboard that no team owns is not operational coverage. Verify repository support, CI runners, report formats, ticket creation, suppression handling, and retesting after remediation.

What makes a finding actionable?
Detection counts are not enough. Require a finding record that another engineer can reproduce and triage.
- A unique test or case identifier and the scanner version.
- Model, provider, system-prompt revision, temperature or other relevant settings, and application build.
- Complete multi-turn transcript or tool trace, with secrets redacted safely.
- Affected asset: code path, document, tool, agent, memory record, or policy.
- Severity rationale tied to possible impact and required access.
- Expected behavior, observed behavior, and pass/fail criteria.
- Suggested mitigation and a command or workflow to rerun the case.
- History showing whether the issue was fixed, accepted, suppressed, or regressed.
The reviewed OWASP material does not establish a common scoring method or comparable false-positive rates across vendors. Do not treat one product’s score as directly equivalent to another’s without defining your own severity and acceptance rules.
Which tools are useful starting points?
OWASP DevSecOps guidance names several tools as examples, not as a ranking.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →garak
The guidance describes garak as NVIDIA’s LLM vulnerability scanner, with probes and detectors for jailbreaks, prompt injection, leakage, and other failure modes. Evaluate whether its probes match your model, whether output is reproducible, and how results enter your CI and issue-tracking workflow.
Giskard
The same guidance describes Giskard as an open-source testing library for LLM agents with scenario-based checks and a vulnerability scan. It notes that version 3 is a rewrite and that version 2 is no longer actively maintained in that guidance. Confirm the current release, supported integrations, and maintenance status before adopting a version-specific workflow.
promptfoo
OWASP describes promptfoo as an MIT-licensed CLI and library for evaluations and red teaming, with OWASP-mapped plugins and CI integration. During a pilot, verify how custom scenarios, model comparisons, red-team cases, and regression thresholds are represented in your pipeline. Do not rely on dated corporate or ownership statements; check current documentation independently.

Use one row per candidate and require written answers. A practical scorecard has these columns:
| Dimension | Record for every candidate |
|---|---|
| Architecture coverage | Model endpoint, application code, RAG, ingestion, MCP, tools, agents, memory, and channels supported |
| Threat coverage | Direct and indirect injection, jailbreaks, leakage, exfiltration, excessive agency, tool misuse, goal hijacking, memory poisoning, and inter-agent deception |

How should you run a pilot?
- Freeze a representative test set. Include normal tasks, known incidents, sensitive-data cases, retrieved documents, tool calls, and multi-turn conversations.
- Define pass and fail criteria. Specify what must be blocked, what may be allowed with approval, and what should generate an alert.
- Connect the candidate to a non-production environment. Use synthetic secrets and reversible tools; never grant unrestricted production credentials for an evaluation.
- Run identical cases across candidates. Preserve model, prompt, corpus, tool definitions, and configuration so differences reflect the scanner rather than the test setup.
- Review evidence with developers and security staff. Record reproducibility, triage time, false positives, and whether mitigation advice is usable.
- Retest fixes. A scanner earns a place in the workflow only if a closed finding can be replayed and a regression can fail the appropriate gate.
- Document operational cost. Measure runtime overhead, rate-limit behavior, data retention, access approvals, and maintenance effort during the pilot.
What commonly goes wrong?
Choosing by a broad feature list
“AI security” may describe code scanning, red teaming, runtime controls, or all three. Separate the capabilities and demand evidence for each one.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTesting only the model endpoint
Application logic, retrieval, tools, and memory can introduce failures that a bare endpoint test cannot see. Exercise the complete workflow.
Best Value
Accepting an unrepeatable demo
A dramatic generated prompt is not a regression test unless the input, configuration, and expected result can be preserved and replayed.
Ignoring data governance
Sending prompts, source documents, or traces to an external service may create a new exposure. Verify processing location, retention, access controls, deletion, and redaction before connecting real data.
Assuming directory inclusion is validation
OWASP’s directory is a discovery resource. It does not establish comparative accuracy, false-positive rates, pricing, or endorsement.

Select the smallest combination that covers your architecture and risk, not the longest feature list. A code-and-supply-chain scanner may be essential for developer feedback but insufficient for an agent with privileged tools. A red-team harness may expose behavioral failures but require separate runtime controls. A monitoring platform may detect live misuse yet provide little help with insecure code before release.
Make the decision traceable: list covered assets, tested threats, lifecycle gates, evidence requirements, operational constraints, and unresolved gaps. Recheck vendor features, pricing, availability, integrations, and maintenance status close to purchase because OWASP taxonomy pages and commercial offerings can change. The result should be a documented risk-control map that your engineering and security teams can operate, measure, and retest.
