Traditional SIEM rules detect. They evaluate incoming telemetry against explicit, repeatable conditions and raise an alert when those conditions match. AI-assisted triage investigates and prioritizes. It can gather related evidence, enrich indicators, classify supported alerts, and explain why an alert appears malicious or benign. The strongest security operations design uses both layers: tuned rules for dependable detection, AI for faster context and analyst review.
Detection and triage solve different problems
A SIEM rule answers a narrow question: “Did the collected events match this condition?” A triage workflow answers the next questions: “What else is connected to this alert? Is the activity expected? How severe is it? What should an analyst do next?” Treating the two as substitutes creates blind spots. Rules without investigation produce queues full of context-poor alerts; AI without dependable detections has no reliable set of events to examine.

Google Security Operations describes alerts as events identified by security infrastructure or detection rules, and notes that alerts generated by detection rules require human or agentic review. Its investigation guidance therefore places detection and review in separate, connected stages.
What traditional SIEM rules handle best
Explicit, repeatable conditions
Rules are well suited to known patterns: a privileged account logging in from an unusual source, a sequence of authentication failures followed by success, or a command-line pattern associated with a documented technique. The condition is visible, testable, and repeatable. When the same telemetry arrives, the same logic can fire again, which helps detection engineers explain why an alert exists.

That transparency is about the trigger, not a guarantee that the alert is correct. A broad rule can create noise, while a narrow rule can miss variations of the behavior. The practical trade-off is coverage versus precision, and it must be measured against local data.
Operational control and tuning
Security teams can test rules, adjust thresholds, limit scope, add exclusions, and track detection maturity. Joint guidance from CISA and partner agencies recommends developing, implementing, testing, and tuning alerting mechanisms in network and host intrusion-detection systems or SIEM platforms. It also warns against overly broad rules and recommends useful naming that identifies maturity and the relevant ATT&CK phase. The guidance is available as a PDF.
That maintenance work is not optional. Changes to identity providers, endpoint logging, cloud services, network architecture, and attacker behavior can make a once-useful condition stale. A rule inventory should record its data sources, intended behavior, owner, test cases, exceptions, severity rationale, and last review.

A rule can show the event fields and logic that caused the alert. That is valuable during incident review, compliance audits, and detection engineering. It also makes controlled changes possible: an analyst can demonstrate that a threshold was changed, explain why an allowlist was added, and compare alert volume before and after the change.
Rules are particularly useful when the organization needs deterministic controls, such as alerting on a required audit event, enforcing a threshold, or detecting a sequence that has already been characterized. They can also provide a stable baseline against which AI-assisted workflows are evaluated.
Where rules stop
A rule normally reports that its condition matched; it does not automatically determine whether the user was authorized, whether the process tree is suspicious, or whether related activity exists elsewhere in the environment. Analysts must connect evidence, establish severity, and decide whether to escalate or respond. The rule may identify the starting point, but the investigative burden remains.

What AI-assisted alert triage handles best
Context gathering across related evidence
AI triage can perform the investigative searches that follow an alert. Google’s documented Triage and Investigation Agent can run dynamic searches, enrich indicators with Google Threat Intelligence, analyze command lines, and reconstruct process trees before producing findings and reasoning. Google’s documentation describes the workflow and its supported scope.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →In practice, that means an analyst may receive a connected narrative instead of a single event: the account involved, the host, preceding and subsequent logins, related domains or hashes, process ancestry, and other evidence available through configured integrations. The value is not that the model “knows” an incident; it is that it can gather and organize evidence that would otherwise require several manual searches.
Classification with readable rationale
For supported alert types, AI systems can classify an alert as a likely true or false positive and summarize the evidence behind that assessment. Microsoft documents verdicts with supporting evidence and a graphical or stepwise rationale in its Security Alert Triage Agent. The preview documentation lists the supported workflow and prerequisites; a separate overview explains the agent’s operating model.
A useful rationale should identify the observations that influenced the verdict, not merely provide a confidence label. Analysts need to inspect the underlying events, challenge an incorrect assumption, and preserve enough context for a later review.
Prioritization and workflow support
AI triage can help sort a queue so analysts spend time first on alerts with stronger evidence of malicious activity. Microsoft describes an agent that can classify supported alerts, update incident status, and leave malicious cases open for analyst investigation. Its documentation also describes least-privilege identity setup, logged activity, and administrator review.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThose controls matter because a classification can change how a case is handled. An automated update should be attributable to a specific identity, visible in an audit history, and reversible when an analyst finds contrary evidence.

Boundaries and unsupported cases
AI triage is not a universal layer over every alert. Google’s agent applies only to specified Security Operations configurations and data paths, and its documentation says it does not automatically analyze alerts beyond its stated limit. Microsoft lists workload-specific prerequisites and licensing requirements; expanded identity and cloud-alert capabilities have been documented as preview features. Availability can change, so confirm the current support matrix before deployment.
Unsupported alerts should follow a defined fallback path: normal analyst review, an existing playbook, or a different investigation workflow. Do not imply that an unprocessed alert was cleared simply because an agent handled other alert types.
Side-by-side comparison
| Decision area | Traditional SIEM rules | AI-assisted triage |
|---|---|---|
| Primary job | Match explicit conditions in ingested telemetry and generate an alert. | Investigate an alert, gather context, classify supported cases, and summarize reasoning. |
| Best fit | Known patterns, deterministic thresholds, and repeatable compliance or detection logic. | Cross-event investigation, indicator enrichment, process-context analysis, and queue prioritization. |
| Evidence visibility | Triggering fields and rule logic are normally inspectable. | Underlying evidence plus agent activity or reasoning should be inspectable when the platform supports it. |
| Maintenance | Regular testing, threshold tuning, scope changes, and exception management. | Integration upkeep, supported-workload configuration, feedback controls, and review of classifications. |
| Coverage boundary | Limited to the events, fields, and behaviors encoded in the rule and available in the SIEM. | Limited to configured data paths, permissions, integrations, and alert types supported by the agent. |
| Decision authority | Raises an alert; analysts still establish severity and response. | May provide a verdict or update workflow state, but analyst oversight remains necessary. |
| Failure mode | Overly broad logic creates noise; overly narrow logic misses variants. | Unsupported or poorly configured alerts may not be analyzed, and an incorrect classification still requires correction. |
How the two layers work together
1. Collect and normalize telemetry
Ingest the identity, endpoint, network, cloud, and application events required by the detections you intend to run. Confirm that timestamps, host and user identifiers, process fields, and indicator formats are normalized well enough for both rule evaluation and investigative searches.

2. Detect with tested rules
Define the behavior, data sources, thresholds, exclusions, severity, and ATT&CK mapping for each rule. Test it against representative benign activity and known malicious scenarios. Track alert volume and analyst disposition after deployment. CISA’s guidance emphasizes testing and tuning rather than treating a rule as finished when it first goes live.
3. Route eligible alerts to triage
Specify which alert types, tenants, data sources, and severities an AI agent may process. Make the boundary explicit in the workflow. Alerts outside the supported scope should be routed to human investigation rather than silently dropped.
4. Gather and preserve context
The triage step should query related events, enrich indicators, inspect command lines or process trees where available, and retain links to the source evidence. Preserve provenance so an analyst can reproduce the reasoning and distinguish original telemetry from generated text.

5. Review the verdict and act
A true-positive classification is a prioritization signal, not proof that containment or remediation is complete. Keep malicious cases available for analyst investigation. For likely false positives, verify the rationale against business context before closing or suppressing the alert. Record overrides and the evidence that justified them.

Do not choose between “rules” and “AI” based on a generic accuracy claim. Compare the workflow against local outcomes using the following questions.
- Detection coverage: Which event sources and attack behaviors are covered? Which are outside the rule or model’s scope?
- Alert quality: How often do analysts correct the initial disposition? Use your own reviewed cases or an independently validated dataset; no universal false-positive rate is established here.
- Investigation depth: Can the workflow query related events, enrich indicators, inspect process context, and retain provenance?
- Transparency: Can an analyst see the triggering rule, source evidence, AI reasoning, and activity log?
- Operational boundaries: Which alert types, tenants, data sources, thresholds, and permissions are supported? What is the fallback for everything else?
- Maintenance burden: How much time goes into rule tests and tuning, integration upkeep, agent configuration, and feedback review?
- Governance: Which identity performs actions? Are least-privilege permissions, approvals, audit history, and analyst checks enforced before a case changes state?
- Cost and availability: Confirm current licensing, capacity, preview or generally available status, and vendor terms directly. Prices and entitlements are not established by the cited material.
Useful local measures include time from alert creation to first human review, time to a supported disposition, percentage of classifications overridden, evidence completeness, and the number of alerts that fall outside the configured scope. Report these by alert family and data source rather than collapsing them into one headline number.
What the published timing figures do—and do not—prove
Google Cloud’s Agentic SOC page says its approach can reduce typical manual analysis from 30 minutes to 60 seconds. That is a Google-published benefit claim, not an independent benchmark, a cross-vendor comparison, or a guaranteed result for every environment.
Google Security Operations documentation also describes an average investigation time of 60 seconds and a maximum of 20 minutes for its documented Triage and Investigation Agent workflow. These are vendor-published operational figures; they should not be interpreted as a service-level guarantee or as evidence that AI is always faster than a skilled analyst.
No independent comparative accuracy statistic is established in the available material. Avoid claiming a particular false-positive reduction, universal speedup, or superiority over tuned rules without data from your own environment or a credible controlled evaluation.

Governance and failure safeguards
Use least privilege
Give the triage identity only the permissions required to read the relevant telemetry, run approved searches, enrich indicators, and update the specific workflow fields it is authorized to change. Separate investigation permissions from containment permissions unless there is a documented reason to combine them.
Keep an audit trail
Log the alert identifier, source evidence, searches performed, enrichment results, generated rationale, final classification, identity used, and any analyst override. Review the logs for unsupported actions, missing evidence, and changes in disposition patterns.
Design for human correction
Analysts need a clear way to reject a verdict, reopen a case, add business context, and feed the correction into rule or agent tuning. A workflow that cannot be corrected safely turns an occasional model error into a process defect.

Protect against data and model risks
AI systems can inherit errors from incomplete telemetry, misleading indicators, or compromised data sources. Validate high-impact findings against original events. Limit sensitive data exposure, document retention, and ensure that generated summaries do not replace the evidence required for incident handling.
NIST’s 2026 summary of responses on security considerations for AI agents provides broader context on agent risks; it does not establish a direct comparison between AI alert triage and SIEM detection rules.
Common implementation mistakes
- Replacing detections with a chatbot: A conversational interface cannot compensate for missing telemetry or untested detection logic.
- Sending every alert to the agent: Scope, licensing, permissions, and supported data paths may limit coverage. Define an explicit fallback.
- Closing on a label alone: Require inspectable evidence and retain analyst review for consequential cases.
- Ignoring rule hygiene: AI-generated context does not fix an overly broad rule. Tune thresholds, exclusions, and data quality continuously.
- Quoting vendor timing as a promise: Published figures describe a vendor’s documented workflow, not your queue, integrations, or staffing model.
- Failing to measure overrides: Track where analysts disagree with classifications; those cases reveal missing context, poor rules, or unsupported workloads.
Choosing the right emphasis
Favor rule investment when
- The behavior is well defined and must be detected deterministically.
- You need an auditable trigger that can be tested and changed through a controlled process.
- Required telemetry is stable, and the main problem is coverage or noisy thresholds.
Add AI triage when
- Analysts spend substantial time correlating events, enriching indicators, or reconstructing process activity.
- The platform supports the alert families and data paths that create your largest investigation burden.
- You can provide least-privilege access, preserve evidence, and review classifications before consequential actions.
Use both for mature operations
Keep the rule layer responsible for finding defined behaviors. Apply AI where it can add context and prioritization, then compare both layers against reviewed local outcomes. This division keeps detection engineering accountable while using automation where investigation work is repetitive and evidence-rich.
Bottom line
Traditional SIEM rules are strongest at explicit, repeatable detection. AI-assisted triage is strongest at investigating supported alerts, correlating evidence, and presenting a readable assessment. Neither is a universal replacement for the other. Maintain tested and tuned rules, add AI where its integrations and scope genuinely reduce investigation effort, and require permissions, auditability, and analyst review before a generated classification changes the incident record.
