AI Search Isn’t Ending Marketing: Why Brands Are Reviving Print, Mail and Events

AI search is changing where people discover information, but it has not made Google, websites or digital marketing obsolete. Marketers are adding channels such as direct mail, print, live events, podcasts, catalogs and newsletters because they can create attention and relationships that an answer interface may not. The practical shift is not “old versus new”: it is a channel mix that accounts for AI discovery while measuring clicks, attention and business outcomes separately.

Is AI search replacing Google?

No evidence here supports that conclusion. People are using AI-assisted search, but traditional search and social platforms remain part of the consumer mix. Gartner’s January 2026 release reported two separate U.S. surveys: among 377 consumers surveyed in June and July 2025, 31% said AI summaries led them to spend more time searching and 16% said they spent less. In that same survey, 31% said AI Overviews led them to consider more purchase options, while 7% considered fewer. In a separate survey of 365 U.S. consumers conducted in July and August 2025, 51% said GenAI had changed their research habits; Gartner also reported that over two-thirds continued past Google’s AI Overview. Gartner’s survey release describes a changing journey, not the disappearance of search.

Traffic claims also depend on what is being counted. WP Engine’s September 28, 2026 article relays third-party reports of fewer click-generating searches and fewer clicks when an AI summary appears. Google’s August 6, 2025 account says its total organic click volume was “relatively stable year-over-year” and that it sent “slightly more quality clicks.” Google defines a quality click in terms of a user not quickly clicking back. That is the company’s characterization of its own observations, not a published percentage change or an independent industry-wide measure. Google’s statement and reports of click declines should not be collapsed into one universal traffic figure.

Why bring back direct mail, print and events?

AI answers can satisfy some information needs without a visit to a publisher or brand website. Marketers are responding by investing in ways to earn direct attention and create experiences that are harder to reduce to a result on a screen. Direct mail and catalogs put a brand in someone’s hands; print can be designed to keep; events create in-person interaction; podcasts and newsletters build repeated, opted-in contact.

These channels are not automatically more effective than search. Their value depends on audience, offer, execution and the outcome being measured. Jacqueline Loch, executive vice president of strategy and revenue at AZURE Media, captured the attention principle in a Content Marketing Institute interview quoted by WP Engine: “Earn attention and be worthy of your customer’s time by making print worth keeping, newsletters worth opening, events worth attending.” The point is not nostalgia: a physical or direct channel still has to deserve its place in someone’s life.

How do brands get found in AI answers?

AI visibility is not simply a matter of ranking a page in classic search. AI systems can draw on a broad and variable set of sources, and a brand’s own website may be only one part of that picture. McKinsey’s 2025 analysis says brand-owned sites account for 5–10% of sources referenced in many AI-search cases; the mix varies by model, location, category and question. It identifies affiliates and user-generated content among relevant source types. That supports maintaining clear, useful owned content while also earning credible coverage and participation in relevant third-party and community sources. It does not establish a universal formula or guarantee that any particular tactic will earn a citation. McKinsey’s analysis also reports that in its August 2025 AI Discovery Survey of 1,927 respondents, 44% of AI-powered search users named it their primary and preferred source of insight, compared with 31% for traditional search, 9% for retailer or brand websites, and 6% for review sites. Those figures describe that survey, not every market or category.

For marketers, the implication is to make brand information accurate and useful wherever prospective customers might encounter it. Owned pages remain important for explaining products, services and expertise; third-party coverage, affiliates and user-generated discussions can influence what systems and people see. Because source mixes vary, teams should examine the answers and sources relevant to their own brand, questions and markets rather than treating one visibility score as a complete account.

Are AI search visitors worth more?

The available figures do not establish that AI-referred visitors convert or generate revenue at a higher rate than visitors from traditional search. A smaller number of visits could still be valuable if they are more engaged or more likely to act, but that needs to be measured for the organization and journey in question. Conversely, appearing in an AI answer may influence a later purchase without producing a trackable click.

Semrush’s 2026 article reports that 49% of its surveyed marketers said measuring AI’s impact on pipeline or revenue was a top challenge, while 45% said measuring visibility in AI answers was difficult. These are survey findings, not audited industry-wide rates. Semrush’s findings highlight why visibility, referral traffic and revenue should not be treated as interchangeable outcomes.

What should marketers measure when clicks are an incomplete picture?

Use a measurement set that keeps discovery, engagement and business results distinct. An AI answer impression is not a visit; a visit is not necessarily an engaged session; and neither proves incremental revenue. Track the measures that map to the actual customer journey and label their limits.

  • Classic organic clicks: Monitor search referrals and landing-page traffic over time, with attention to query, page and market. Keep the reporting definition consistent so a change in clicks is not confused with a change in measurement.
  • Quality and engagement: Examine whether visitors stay, explore relevant pages or take meaningful next steps. Google’s “quality click” language refers to users not quickly returning to results; it is Google’s own framing, not a universal engagement standard.
  • AI-answer presence and accuracy: Check whether the brand appears for relevant questions, what sources are cited, and whether the description is correct. Presence alone does not show that a user saw or acted on the answer.
  • Cross-channel attention: Assess participation and response through channels such as events, newsletters, podcasts, direct mail and print. Use metrics appropriate to each channel rather than forcing them into a click-only model.
  • Pipeline and revenue: Connect channel activity to qualified opportunities, conversions or revenue where attribution is credible. Separate observed correlation from proven incremental impact.

Semrush reports that 85% of its surveyed marketers said AI changed their search strategy, but only 22% said SEO and AI search were fully integrated across strategy, execution and reporting. It also reports planned investment in AI search optimization among 38% of respondents and AI visibility tools among 25%. These figures indicate stated priorities and reported integration among respondents; they do not establish that investment will produce a particular result.

How should a marketing team adapt its channel mix?

  1. Protect the useful search foundation. Continue to make pages accurate, discoverable and genuinely helpful. AI-assisted search is another discovery environment, not a reason to abandon traditional search or the website.
  2. Audit AI answers for real customer questions. Record whether the brand is mentioned, whether the information is correct and which kinds of sources appear. Treat the results as a changing snapshot because they can vary by model, place, category and wording.
  3. Choose direct channels for a specific job. Use print, mail, events, podcasts or newsletters when their format supports the audience relationship or experience you want. Do not revive a channel solely because it is old or novel.
  4. Set separate measures before launch. Define what counts as a referral, an engaged visit, an AI-answer appearance, meaningful attention and a business outcome. Avoid presenting one as a substitute for another.
  5. Review results across the journey. Compare channels against their intended role and look for credible links to downstream outcomes. Where attribution is weak, report that uncertainty instead of assigning unsupported credit.

Gartner’s marketing-practice executive Emma Mathison put the balance plainly: “Marketers cannot afford to think of AI as a replacement for traditional search.” Google’s Liz Reid likewise said the company continues to send billions of clicks to the web every day and is committed to prioritizing the web in its AI search experiences; that is Google’s stated position. Together, these statements underscore why a resilient plan should prepare for AI discovery without assuming the web or established channels have stopped mattering.
