A University of Toronto account of a study published in JAMIA Open reports that AI scribes reduced the time physicians spent documenting patient-chart notes by 69.1% during simulated encounters. That result concerns documentation time—not a measured reduction in physician burnout. Whether the tools improve everyday clinical work, and whether any time saved eases burnout, remains to be established.
What the study found
The University of Toronto’s September 22, 2026 account describes a collaboration between researchers at the university and Women’s College Hospital. Led by LaShawn Murray, a PhD student in the university’s Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, the study involved nine primary-care physicians. Each physician completed four simulated patient encounters with and without AI assistance, according to the University of Toronto report.

- The university reports that AI scribes reduced the time needed to document notes for patient charts by 69.1% in the study.
- Without AI scribes, physicians spent more than a third of each simulated encounter taking notes, the account says.
Both figures describe documentation in simulated encounters, as reported by the university. They should not be read as evidence that physicians saved the same share of their total work time in routine practice.

Rather than charting continuously during the simulated visit, physicians using AI scribes typically reviewed and edited the generated notes afterward. Some also took scratch notes during the encounter. The university report says this approach reduced switching between the patient and the computer.

The researchers also observed that writing charts during a visit could prompt clinical thinking and additional questions. That observation does not establish either a patient-care benefit or harm. It does, however, show why less typing alone cannot tell us whether a new workflow is better overall: documentation may take time while also playing a role in how clinicians think through an encounter.
Does this prove AI scribes reduce physician burnout?
No. The university’s account does not report that the study measured burnout or found that it declined. Less time spent on one documentation task could potentially ease part of physicians’ workload, but the reported result does not demonstrate a corresponding change in stress, exhaustion, or burnout.

Murray described a shift away from expecting the technology to solve every administrative problem: “Now that’s shifted to, ‘hey, maybe this is just one piece of the overall documentation burden that we’re seeing,’ because charts are not the only administrative burden facing physicians.” Referrals, prescription orders, billing, and regulatory expectations remain part of the work.
What remains uncertain
Simulated encounters cannot establish how AI scribes perform across the demands of everyday clinical practice. The University of Toronto report says more research is needed in routine care and identifies practical questions that matter for adoption:
Rank #3
- Free-floating, decoupled microphone for precise recordings
- Built-in pop filter for perfect sound quality
- Built-in motion sensor for device control by gestures
- Freely configurable function keys for personalised workflow
- Microphone grille with optimised structure for crystal clear sound
- Will patients be comfortable with an AI scribe and with being recorded?
- Who can access recordings, and how are patient consent and refusals handled?
- Will acceptance and performance differ across patient populations?
- How will clinicians review and correct generated notes in real-world workflows?
The university says researchers previously compared six products and used three in this study, but its account does not name them. It therefore does not support identifying the products, ranking vendors, or treating the findings as an endorsement of a particular tool.

The study offers a promising, limited finding: under simulated conditions, AI scribes reduced time spent documenting chart notes. It does not show that they reduce physicians’ overall administrative workload, improve patient care, or prevent burnout. Those broader effects depend on how the tools work in real appointments, how much editing they require, and whether saved documentation time meaningfully changes clinicians’ day-to-day work.
