In a 29 May 2026 LessWrong opinion article, Max Tegmark and Meia Chita-Tegmark ask AI researchers to make their principles actionable through six questions about red lines, responsibility, awareness and speaking up. Their checklist is advice, not a validated intervention with measured effects.

1. Do you have red lines?
Decide in advance which organizational actions would be morally unacceptable to you. A red line is more useful when it includes a response you are genuinely prepared to take if it is crossed—for example, leaving or reporting concerns. The point is not to make a dramatic promise; it is to consider what you would do before pressure, career incentives or loyalty make the choice harder.
Make the boundary specific enough to guide a decision. Consider what conduct or consequences would trigger it, what evidence you would need, and whether the proposed response is one you could carry out.

2. Have you written them down and shared them?
Tegmark and Chita-Tegmark recommend recording each red line alongside the action you intend to take if it is crossed. Sharing that commitment with trusted people can create accountability and give you someone to consult when events become ambiguous.
A written commitment should distinguish a concern that needs investigation from a confirmed breach. Note what would count as evidence and what steps you would take to clarify the facts before acting.

3. Have you resisted moral disengagement?
The authors draw on Albert Bandura’s concept of moral disengagement and invoke Hannah Arendt while describing ways people can make harmful conduct seem acceptable or feel less personally responsible. Their examples include shifting or diffusing responsibility, using euphemisms, blaming critics, reducing affected people to abstractions, making exceptions for one’s own interests, comparing oneself only with worse actors, and justifying harm through a claimed higher purpose.

These are prompts for reflection, not proof that any particular explanation is dishonest. When evaluating a decision, ask what the plain-language description is, who bears the consequences, who is accountable, and whether the same reasoning would seem acceptable if another organization used it.

4. Do you maintain situational awareness?
Do not rely only on an organization’s internal account of its work. The authors urge readers to examine behavior, product use, lobbying and alleged harms, including consequences that may be indirect. A system’s effects can depend on how others use it, so ask what is known, what remains uncertain and where relevant information can be checked.
The LessWrong article makes claims about particular companies and incidents, but those claims are not independently verified by the source reviewed here. Treat them as claims by the authors unless you confirm them through other reliable evidence.

5. Do you make noise internally?
Ask colleagues and managers questions that could clarify what is happening. Explain the concern and, where appropriate, advocate for a change. A useful first step may be to establish who made a decision, what information informed it, what impacts have been assessed and which internal channel can address the issue.

6. Do you make noise externally?
The authors also raise public criticism and reporting harmful or illegal conduct as possible responses. External disclosure can carry personal and professional consequences, so understand relevant company policies and consider the seriousness of the concern, the evidence available, whether internal channels can clarify or resolve it, and the commitment you made when defining your red lines.
The article recommends considering reputable whistleblower organizations that may offer legal support or financial aid, but names no provider and gives no legal advice. Check applicable policies and seek qualified support before disclosing sensitive information. Do not assume that a particular organization, protection or form of assistance is available without verifying it.
How to use the six questions
- Set boundaries before a crisis. Identify conduct you would not accept and define what would count as crossing the line.
- Choose a realistic response. Decide what action you are prepared to take, while distinguishing suspicion from established evidence.
- Write down and share the commitment. Ask a trusted person to help you think through ambiguous cases and maintain accountability.
- Check the facts and the framing. Look beyond internal narratives, consider direct and indirect impacts, and notice language that obscures responsibility or harm.
- Raise concerns at the right level. Ask questions and use suitable internal channels where they can clarify or address the issue.
- Assess external options carefully. Before public criticism or reporting, review relevant policies, possible consequences and whether reputable outside support is appropriate.
What the checklist can—and cannot—establish
The six questions offer a practical structure for thinking through personal commitments and workplace choices. The LessWrong article does not provide validated outcome measures showing that the checklist changes behavior, nor does it identify a named original statistical publisher and year for its illustrative numerical claims. Use the questions as prompts for judgment, not as evidence that a particular action is safe, effective or legally protected.
