AI research assistants that search papers without uploading your drafts

Yes—but “no upload” describes how you start a search, not where the service processes your data. You can enter a research question into Elicit, search Semantic Scholar without creating an account, or use Consensus to discover papers from a query. Those routes search a provider’s scholarly index; they do not require you to submit your unpublished draft for the initial discovery step.

The important qualification is that each service has other features, including document analysis or full-text chat, that may involve uploads. Before using any tool with confidential work, check the exact feature, current privacy policy, retention language, account requirements, and your institution’s rules.

What “without uploading your drafts” actually means

A query-only literature search sends a question, topic, or keywords to a provider’s search system. The provider then returns papers from its own index or connected sources. Your manuscript, thesis chapter, grant application, or lab notes are not needed to begin that discovery workflow.

That is different from asking an assistant to analyze your own document. Summarizing a draft, extracting citations from a PDF, comparing your manuscript with papers, or chatting with a private collection can require a file upload even when the same product also offers query-based search. A search page that accepts a question therefore cannot be treated as proof that every feature is upload-free.

“No upload” also does not mean local processing, zero logging, or confidentiality beyond the provider’s terms. A service may still receive your query, account details, device information, and usage data. The privacy question is what data is collected, why it is retained, who can access it, and which feature handled it.

Which assistants support query-first discovery?

Service Can a question start paper discovery? Corpus and method described by the provider Upload caveat Account and privacy point
Elicit Yes. Its paper search ranks papers against a natural-language research question. More than 138 million academic papers and conference proceedings, updated weekly. Elicit says it uses custom embedding models, citation count, recency, and language-model prioritization of the top 1,000 results; it emphasizes semantic meaning over keyword frequency. Uploading documents is a separate capability. Research Agent sessions can use up to 20 uploaded resources, and other workflows can analyze supplied material. Its policy describes collection of account, device, and usage information, retention for stated purposes, and security safeguards. The page is marked “Last updated: September 12, 2023.”
Semantic Scholar Yes. You can search papers directly on the site. The official FAQ supports paper access without an account; it does not provide a corpus-size or accuracy guarantee in the cited statement. The account-free discovery statement does not establish that every other feature accepts no files. The FAQ says it does not collect sign-in information such as a username or password. That is narrower than saying it collects no browsing or usage data.
Consensus Yes. It describes an AI-powered academic search engine that answers questions from indexed research. More than 220 million peer-reviewed papers, updated weekly, sourced from Semantic Scholar, OpenAlex, and Consensus’s scholarly-web crawl. It describes hybrid semantic-embedding and keyword search. Its documentation also describes full-text chat involving papers, collections, or uploaded documents. Check the requirement for the particular feature before assuming a no-upload workflow. The cited explanation describes product behavior, not a blanket privacy promise.

These figures are vendor-reported scale descriptions, not independent accuracy tests. A larger index can improve coverage while still returning irrelevant, inaccessible, retracted, or poorly matched papers. Evaluate the references and methods behind an answer rather than ranking tools by corpus size alone.

Elicit: question-led search with optional document workflows

How its paper search works

Elicit says you can enter a research question and receive papers ranked primarily by similarity in content or meaning rather than by keyword frequency. Its description says custom embedding models, citation counts, and recency contribute to ranking. Language models then prioritize the top 1,000 papers for relevance; the number shown to you depends on the plan and workflow. The service reports a corpus of more than 138 million academic papers and conference proceedings, with weekly updates. It also reports more than 545,000 clinical trials registered on ClinicalTrials.gov, updated in real time. These are statements from Elicit’s product page, not an independent benchmark.

Starting without a draft

  1. Open Elicit paper search and describe the question in ordinary language. State the population, intervention or exposure, comparison, outcome, and date range when they matter.
  2. Review the returned papers and inspect the title, abstract, publication details, and linked source before treating a result as relevant.
  3. Refine the wording rather than uploading your manuscript. Add synonyms, the study design you need, or a narrower population if the first result set is broad.
  4. Save the papers that survive your relevance check and record why each one belongs in your reading set.

Elicit also describes natural-language screening, research reports, and systematic-review workflows. A report can generate a write-up with references to the papers used, but a generated citation list still needs human verification against the original paper.

Research Agent and the upload boundary

Elicit’s current workflow guide says Research Agent sessions can access Elicit’s full paper corpus and the wider web and can take up to 20 uploaded resources. That upload allowance is useful when you deliberately want analysis of selected papers or other files; it is not a requirement for query-only discovery. The same guide says earlier Find Papers, Extract Data, and Chat with Papers features became part of Research Agent on September 30, 2026. Workflow access remains subject to plan usage limits.

The guide says the Systematic Review workflow is available to Pro, Scale, and Enterprise subscribers and supports paper collection, screening, extraction, and a PRISMA-style report. If you only need to discover literature without submitting a draft, use the question-led search path and avoid attaching files. If you need a formal review, confirm the current plan and workflow limits before designing your protocol around them.

Privacy questions to ask before using Elicit

Elicit’s privacy policy identifies Elicit Research, PBC and says it collects personal information such as an email address and credentials, plus automatically collected device and usage information. It describes retention for as long as necessary for stated purposes, subject to legal exceptions, and technical and organizational safeguards. It also says internet transmission cannot be guaranteed to be completely secure. The page is dated September 12, 2023, so check the live policy again before entering sensitive material.

A Trust Center search result lists SOC 2 materials, including a SOC 2 Type 2 report dated July 22, 2026. The available material does not establish the report’s scope, controls, or findings, so do not treat the listing as proof that a particular draft is covered by a specific control. Elicit’s API documentation separately describes paper and clinical-trial search, including semantic or corpus-specific keyword modes using the Elicit corpus or PubMed; verify current API access and account requirements before building an automated workflow.

Semantic Scholar: the simplest account-free starting point

Semantic Scholar is useful when your main requirement is to search papers without creating an account or uploading a draft. Its official FAQ states: “Please note that you do not need to create an account to access papers on Semantic Scholar.” The same FAQ says Semantic Scholar does not collect sign-in information such as a username or password.

That statement supports account-free access, not a guarantee that no technical, analytics, or usage information is collected. If your threat model includes search-history exposure, review the site’s current privacy and cookie information and use institutional guidance on browser or network logging. Also remember that opening a publisher’s full text can move you to another site with different terms.

A practical Semantic Scholar workflow

  1. Search with the research question or a compact set of concepts rather than pasting paragraphs from your draft.
  2. Open several results and compare abstracts, publication dates, authors, venues, and links to the underlying paper.
  3. Follow citation and related-paper links to find foundational studies and newer replications.
  4. Download or save only papers you are permitted to use, then verify every important claim in the paper itself.

Because the cited FAQ does not provide a comparable corpus count or accuracy statistic, do not infer that Semantic Scholar is smaller, larger, more private, or more accurate than the other services from the account-free feature alone.

Consensus: broad search, with a separate full-text boundary

Consensus describes an academic search engine that searches more than 220 million peer-reviewed research papers, with weekly updates. Its explanation says the data comes from Semantic Scholar, OpenAlex, and its own scholarly-web crawl. It combines semantic embeddings with keyword matching and, when full text is available, can search beyond titles and abstracts into methods, results, and discussion.

That depth can help when your question depends on how a study was conducted or what outcome it measured. It does not remove the need to inspect the paper: full-text availability varies, indexing can be incomplete, and an AI synthesis can misread a qualified result.

Consensus’s documentation also describes full-text chat across papers, collections, or uploaded documents. Therefore, use its search function as query-first discovery, but check the current instructions and privacy terms before using chat with a private collection or attaching a document. The existence of an upload-enabled feature means the product as a whole should not be labeled “fully upload-free.”

Choosing a tool by the task, not the headline number

Use a query-only search when you need discovery

  • You are building a reading list from a new question.
  • You want papers related by meaning, not only exact keywords.
  • You are screening public literature and can verify results in the original sources.

Use an upload-enabled workflow only when you have cleared the data

  • You need extraction from a set of PDFs or a structured comparison of papers.
  • You want to chat with a collection you assembled.
  • You are analyzing your own draft and have confirmed retention, access, deletion, and reuse terms.

Prefer account-free access when account creation is the main concern

Semantic Scholar’s FAQ directly supports access without an account. Elicit and Consensus may offer public search pages, but the cited material does not establish that all functionality is account-free. Confirm the current sign-in requirement for the exact workflow you plan to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A privacy checklist for unpublished or confidential research

  1. Define the data. Separate a public research question from confidential text, unpublished results, participant information, patentable ideas, and restricted datasets.
  2. Choose the narrowest input. For discovery, send a short question and controlled terms. Do not paste a full abstract, methods section, or draft merely to improve ranking.
  3. Inspect the feature label. Search, Research Agent, report generation, full-text chat, and document analysis can have different processing paths.
  4. Read current terms and privacy policy. Look for collection, retention, model-training or service-provider language, deletion controls, international transfers, and security limitations.
  5. Check governance. Your university, employer, funder, journal, ethics board, or collaborator may prohibit external processing even when a service offers a no-cost or account-free search.
  6. Verify outputs independently. Open the source paper, confirm the study design and result, and check for retractions or corrections before citing it.
  7. Document your process. Save the query, date, tool, and selected papers so another researcher can reproduce the discovery step.

Common failure modes and fixes

“The assistant found a paper, so the claim must be true.”

Search relevance is not evidence quality. Read the abstract and relevant sections, check sample size and design, and compare the conclusion with the assistant’s wording.

“No account means no data collection.”

Account-free access only removes the sign-in requirement described by the service. It does not establish that network, device, browser, or query data is never recorded.

“A large corpus guarantees comprehensive coverage.”

Vendor counts are not independent coverage or accuracy evaluations. Indexing gaps, duplicate records, paywalls, language bias, and delayed updates can affect what you see.

“The search page accepts questions, so every feature is upload-free.”

Check the workflow documentation. Elicit explicitly supports uploaded resources in Research Agent sessions, and Consensus documents chat involving uploaded documents. Keep your discovery query separate from private file analysis unless the latter is approved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The answer cited a source, so no further checking is needed.”

Use the link to locate the actual paper, then verify the authors, publication venue, version, methods, results, and any corrections. Treat AI-generated synthesis as a navigation aid, not as a substitute for the source.

When an API or systematic review is the right next step

Technical teams that need repeatable retrieval can examine Elicit’s API reference, which describes semantic and corpus-specific keyword search across the Elicit corpus or PubMed and includes clinical-trial search. Confirm authentication, quotas, licensing, and current endpoint behavior before production use.

For a systematic review, a defined protocol, reproducible searches, screening records, extraction rules, and human quality checks matter more than an assistant’s fluent summary. Elicit’s guide describes a PRISMA-style workflow for Pro, Scale, and Enterprise subscribers, but plan availability and limits can change. A tool can accelerate discovery and extraction while the review team remains responsible for inclusion decisions and interpretation.

Bottom line for draft-sensitive researchers

Start with a question, not your manuscript. Elicit offers semantic, query-led paper discovery; Semantic Scholar explicitly allows paper access without an account; and Consensus describes broad hybrid search across a large scholarly database. None of those facts proves local processing or a universal confidentiality guarantee. Keep unpublished drafts out of the workflow until the exact feature, current policy, retention terms, and institutional rules have been checked.
