Use an AI research agent for a multi-step investigation that combines web sources, uploaded documents, and synthesis. Use an academic search engine or disciplinary database to locate scholarly literature, trace citations, and build a documented evidence set. For a systematic review or other high-stakes academic project, database searches and a recorded search strategy should remain the evidence backbone. An agent can accelerate discovery, screening, extraction, and drafting, but every important citation and inclusion decision still needs checking.
The right choice depends less on which interface feels smarter than on the corpus, retrieval method, reproducibility, citation fidelity, workflow, access rules, and privacy your task requires.

What is the difference?
Academic search engines retrieve scholarly records
An academic search engine indexes publications and helps you find, filter, and follow them. It may expose metadata such as title, author, journal, date, abstract, references, and citing works. Google Scholar, for example, has visible advanced-search fields for an exact phrase, words to include or exclude, author, publication, and date: Google Scholar. A disciplinary database may add controlled vocabulary, subject filters, indexing of a defined journal set, or export formats required by a field.

AI research agents conduct a sequence of research actions
A general research agent is designed to break a question into subquestions, run multiple searches, open and compare sources, and produce a synthesized answer or report. The source mix can include scholarly papers, government pages, company documentation, standards, news, and material you upload. OpenAI describes Deep Research as independently discovering, reasoning about, and consolidating information from the web, with uploaded-file support and reports that cite source passages: OpenAI’s Deep Research description. Elicit describes a research agent that gathers evidence from scientific databases, journals, public data, and uploaded documents, then creates cited artifacts: Elicit’s product page.
Those descriptions are statements by the vendors about their own products, not independent proof that either system is complete, unbiased, or accurate for your field.
Choose by task, not by tool reputation
| Your task | Best starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Broad background spanning several sectors or source types | AI research agent | It can iterate across web sources and combine unlike documents into a briefing. |
| Find papers in a particular discipline | Academic search engine or disciplinary database | You need the field’s terminology, indexing coverage, filters, and citation trails. |
| Systematic or structured literature review | Documented searches in relevant databases, with AI as support | Eligibility, reproducibility, and reporting requirements cannot be delegated to an opaque search. |
| Verify a specific research claim | Scholarly search, followed by inspection of the original study | The paper’s population, methods, results, and limitations determine whether the claim holds. |
| Current policy, product, regulation, or organizational fact | Agent for discovery, then the responsible primary source | Paper indexes may not contain the current authoritative document. |
| Mixed question requiring papers plus current nonacademic evidence | Two-stage workflow: scholarly search and agent synthesis | Each tool handles the corpus it covers best. |
How each workflow works
Typical agent workflow
- Define the deliverable. State the question, date cutoff, geography, audience, required source types, and whether you need links, quotations, a comparison table, or an evidence matrix.
- Supply context and files. Upload only documents you are allowed to share. Identify which files are authoritative and which are background.
- Let the agent decompose the question. A useful plan separates definitions, competing explanations, primary evidence, counterevidence, and unresolved uncertainty.
- Review the source trail. Open the pages or papers behind each consequential sentence. Check that the source is real, relevant, current for the stated date, and accessible to your intended readers.
- Reconcile conflicts. Ask the agent to show which sources disagree, what populations or dates differ, and whether a conclusion is an inference rather than a reported result.
- Export a checked report. Preserve source URLs, publication details, search date, and any exclusions so another person can audit the work.
Typical academic-search workflow
- Translate the question into concepts. List synonyms, spelling variants, acronyms, controlled terms, population terms, interventions, outcomes, and study designs.
- Select databases deliberately. Use the databases that index the relevant discipline and document the platform, date searched, coverage, and interface settings.
- Run alternate queries. Combine Boolean searches, phrase searches, subject headings, and citation-based searches. Record every material change.
- Screen records. Deduplicate results, apply inclusion and exclusion criteria, and retain reasons for excluding full texts.
- Follow references and citations. Backward references can reveal foundational work; citing-article searches can reveal later replications, corrections, or disagreements.
- Read the studies. Extract design, sample, setting, measurement, analysis, results, limitations, and funding or conflicts when relevant.
Six comparison axes that determine the answer
1. Corpus and provenance
Ask exactly what is searched. Is the material drawn from named scholarly databases, a publisher collection, an open-web crawl, public data, or files you provide? Are journal articles indexed directly, or is a search result merely a web page that mentions them? A large count can describe an index without proving that it covers the journals, conference proceedings, theses, preprints, non-English literature, or unpublished material your question needs.

Its guide also advises checking whether the retrieval method, source selection, and generated citations are transparent: University of Toronto guidance on AI-assisted searching.
2. Retrieval method and control
Keyword and Boolean searches are explicit: you can inspect the query, alter a term, and rerun it. Semantic search can find conceptually related wording that does not share your keywords, but its matching rules may be less visible. Citation searching follows relationships between publications. Agentic retrieval is iterative: the system may change queries after reading a source and decide which link to open next.

Iteration is useful for an exploratory briefing, yet it makes a one-click result difficult to reproduce. For a review protocol, retain the exact query strings and database settings even when an agent suggested them.
3. Citation fidelity
A citation is not evidence merely because it appears in a polished paragraph. Verify that the link resolves to the cited paper or primary document, that the bibliographic details are correct, and that the source actually supports the sentence. The University of Toronto guide frames the check this way: “are citations generated accurate (ie. correct bibliographic data) and faithful (eg. does the citation cite accurately from the primary source?)” This is a practical quality test, not a published error rate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Coverage and reproducibility
Searches can miss relevant terminology, databases, languages, grey literature, negative findings, or papers hidden behind incomplete metadata. An agent can also stop after finding a plausible answer, creating an appearance of completeness without a measurable stopping rule. A documented database strategy lets another researcher rerun the search, compare dates, and explain why records were included or excluded.
5. Workflow features
Match features to the work after retrieval. You may need deduplication, screening queues, blinded decisions, extraction forms, evidence tables, alerts, reference-manager exports, persistent identifiers, or audit logs. An agent’s narrative report is not automatically a screening record or an extraction sheet. Conversely, a search engine may find the right studies but leave synthesis, comparison, and drafting entirely to you.
6. Access, privacy, and governance
Check subscription requirements, institutional authentication, usage limits, data retention, model-training policies, and whether uploading a manuscript, patient-level file, confidential report, or licensed database export is permitted. “Free” can describe an interface while the linked full text remains paywalled. Cost and retention terms vary by product and account; no universal price or access rule applies to all agents or indexes.

Which tool fits common research situations?
Broad background or a cross-sector report
Start with an agent when the question spans, for example, a regulation, a technical standard, market data, and academic context. Ask it to separate primary documents from commentary and to label the date and jurisdiction of each source. Then open the authoritative documents yourself. Use a scholarly search engine in parallel if a claim depends on peer-reviewed evidence rather than current web information.

Finding papers in a discipline
Start with a scholarly engine or the discipline’s databases. Use alternate terms, inspect subject filters, and trace references and citing papers. An agent can suggest synonyms or summarize a paper you already found, but it should not replace the databases that define the field’s coverage.
A structured literature review
Build the protocol and search log first. Specify databases, dates, languages, study designs, population, intervention or exposure, comparator, outcomes, and exclusion rules. AI-assisted search, screening, and extraction may reduce manual work, but the University of Toronto guide says to evaluate query translation, result selection, summary accuracy, and citation fidelity. Elicit advertises automated screening and extraction with partial support for search and report generation; that advertised workflow does not establish that it satisfies your review protocol or reporting standard.
A quick answer about a research claim
Use scholarly search to locate the underlying study, then inspect the abstract and full text where possible. Confirm who was studied, how the outcome was measured, what comparison was made, when the data were collected, and what limitations the authors report. An agent’s concise explanation is a useful orientation, not a substitute for those checks.
Current policy, product, or organizational facts
Use an agent to discover the responsible agency, company documentation, statute, standard, or dated announcement. Cite that primary source in the final answer and record the access date. A paper index may provide historical analysis but not the current rule or product state.

A defensible AI-assisted literature-review workflow
- Write the protocol before prompting. Define the question, eligibility criteria, outcomes, date and language limits, and the databases that must be searched.
- Use databases for the evidence set. Run and save the documented searches. Export records with stable identifiers and deduplicate them.
- Use an agent for bounded assistance. Ask for synonym lists, missed-concept checks, candidate-study summaries, extraction drafts, or a comparison of methods. Keep the agent’s suggestions separate from final inclusion decisions.
- Verify every extracted field. Compare sample sizes, interventions, outcomes, effect estimates, and quoted language with the paper. Mark fields the paper does not report as “not stated,” rather than inferring them.
- Audit citations sentence by sentence. Follow each link and record whether it supports the exact claim, only a narrower claim, or none of it.
- Report the human and machine steps. Preserve queries, dates, databases, prompts or decision rules used, screening counts, exclusions, and any manual corrections required.
Calling an agent-generated report a systematic review is inappropriate unless it meets the applicable method and reporting requirements, including a reproducible search and documented selection process.
How to audit an AI-generated answer
- Existence: Does the URL open, and does the title, author, date, and identifier match?
- Authority: Is this the original study, official document, or a secondary page repeating it?
- Entailment: Does the cited passage support the sentence’s direction and strength, or has a correlation become a causal claim?
- Scope: Do population, geography, time period, sample, and setting match your question?
- Completeness: Are important counterexamples, null results, corrections, or conflicting studies missing?
- Currency: Is the source current enough for a policy, product, or rapidly changing topic?
- Uncertainty: Does the wording distinguish a reported result from the agent’s inference?
What current examples show—and what they do not prove
Elicit’s stated index and workflow
Elicit’s product page, consulted October 13, 2026, states that its semantic search covers 138 million academic papers and 545,000 clinical trials. Those are vendor-stated index counts, not independently audited measures of coverage. The same page describes configurable reports, screening, data extraction, and sentence-level citations. Treat the counts as a product description and still check whether the journals, dates, languages, and study types relevant to your question are represented.
Deep Research’s stated capabilities and limitation
OpenAI’s launch page describes Deep Research as discovering, reasoning about, and consolidating web information, including uploaded files, into reports with source passages. The page also states: “It can sometimes hallucinate facts in responses or make incorrect inferences, though at a notably lower rate than existing ChatGPT models, according to internal evaluations.” That comparison is based on OpenAI’s internal evaluations, so it should not be treated as an independent benchmark of research accuracy.
An unresolved comparative study
A European Heart Journal – Digital Health search-result abstract reports an evaluation of Elicit, Consensus, Scite, ChatGPT-5, and PubMed across four cardiology topics. The tools were used through public free interfaces between August 2025 and January 2026 with live retrieval enabled: study record. The full article was not publicly available, so no winner, score, or comparative performance ranking should be inferred from the abstract alone.

Confusing a big corpus with exhaustive coverage
Symptom: An agent or product advertises millions of records, and the search is treated as complete. Fix: Map the required journals, databases, years, languages, and grey-literature sources; test alternate terms and document what was not searched.
Best Value
Accepting fluent but unsupported synthesis
Symptom: A paragraph sounds authoritative, but its citation is a review, an unrelated paper, or a broken link. Fix: Open the primary source and reduce the sentence to the narrower claim it actually supports.
Missing terminology and negative evidence
Symptom: Results use only the wording in the prompt and omit older names, abbreviations, null studies, or non-English records. Fix: Ask an agent for a synonym map, then run those terms in the relevant databases and inspect citation trails.
Letting the agent make undocumented inclusion decisions
Symptom: You cannot explain why a study was included, excluded, or never found. Fix: Apply prewritten criteria, keep screening decisions and reasons, and use the agent only to propose—not silently enforce—decisions.
Uploading material that should remain private
Symptom: Confidential manuscripts, personal data, or licensed exports are pasted into a third-party service without approval. Fix: Check institutional and product policies, remove identifying information where lawful, and use an approved environment or local workflow when required.
A practical decision rule
Choose an academic search engine first when your deliverable is a defensible set of scholarly publications. Choose an agent first when your deliverable is a current, cross-source briefing or when the work requires repeated searching and synthesis. Combine them when the answer needs both: retrieve and document the scholarly evidence yourself, then use an agent to organize, contrast, or explain it while preserving the original citations.
Before committing to either approach, write down the minimum evidence standard. If another researcher must reproduce the search, favor explicit database queries and logs. If speed and breadth across heterogeneous sources matter more, an agent can save time—but only if you inspect its source trail and state what the search did not establish.
