Yes. In April 2025, TU Delft’s Micro Air Vehicle Laboratory (MAVLab) flew a fully autonomous drone that won the inaugural A2RL x DCL Autonomous Drone Championship in Abu Dhabi and defeated three former Drone Champions League world champions in a knockout competition. MAVLab reported a peak speed of 95.8 km/h on the winding course. The organizer recorded a 17-second run over two laps and 22 gates on a 170-metre track, describing it as the fastest course time and the world’s first AI-only drag race. Those are official event milestones, not independently certified Guinness-style records.
What happened in Abu Dhabi
The competition brought autonomous systems and elite human pilots into the same organizer-run international event. MAVLab first won the AI Grand Challenge, then progressed through a knockout tournament against human racers. Its drone eliminated three pilots who had previously won Drone Champions League world titles.

The result matters because the machine was not remotely flown. The aircraft made navigation and control decisions onboard, using its sensors and computer while the human competitors raced manually. ESA described the field as 13 autonomous drones alongside three drone-racing champions.
Christophe De Wagter, MAVLab’s team lead, said: “I always wondered when AI would be able to compete with human drone racing pilots in real competitions. I’m extremely proud of the team that we were able to make it happen already this year.”

How fast was the autonomous drone?
There are two different performance figures, each describing a different measurement:
| Measure | Figure | What it describes | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peak speed | 95.8 km/h | Maximum reported speed on MAVLab’s winding track | TU Delft MAVLab, 2025 |
| Fastest course time | 17 seconds | Two laps through 22 gates on a 170-metre AI Grand Challenge course | Advanced Technology Research Council/A2RL, 2025 |
| Broader race-environment speeds | More than 150 km/h | Speeds reported for standardized drones in the wider event environment | Advanced Technology Research Council/A2RL, 2025 |
The 95.8 km/h figure should not be substituted for the 17-second result: one is a reported maximum speed, while the other is a timed run over a specified course. The organizer also called the event the “world’s first AI-only drag race,” an event milestone rather than a globally certified record category.

Is this officially a world record?
The available event documentation supports two claims: MAVLab set the fastest time on that 170-metre course, and A2RL documented the first AI-only drag race. It does not establish independent Guinness World Records certification or another third-party world-record standard. “World record” is therefore safest when used with the event context—for example, an organizer-recorded course record—not as an unrestricted claim that applies to every autonomous-drone race.
How the AI controlled the drone
Minimal onboard sensing
The standardized competition drone used an NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX computer, one forward-facing camera and an inertial measurement unit (IMU). The camera supplied visual information about gates and the track ahead; the IMU measured motion and orientation. The organizer’s rules allowed no human input during the autonomous run.

A single camera does not produce a complete map of the world. The control system instead has to infer the drone’s position, velocity and likely path from successive images while combining those estimates with inertial data. That makes latency, motion blur, lighting changes and fast turns central engineering problems.
Direct neural-network control
MAVLab used a deep neural network that sent commands directly to the motors rather than handing its output to a conventional human-designed flight controller. The policy was trained with reinforcement learning: it received feedback from trial-and-error flights and progressively learned actions that kept the drone on the racing line while approaching its physical limits.

ESA’s Guidance and Control Networks, or G&CNets, provide the relevant background. The concept began in ESA’s Advanced Concepts Team for spacecraft guidance. ESA explains that behavioral cloning—imitating recorded pilot behavior—left a simulation-to-reality gap: a policy could appear successful in a simulator yet fail when a real aircraft encountered conditions missing from the training data. Reinforcement learning was used to make the network more robust to unforeseen conditions during flight.

Why the 2025 race is different from the Zurich result
The Abu Dhabi win follows a major 2023 result from the University of Zurich. That project’s Swift autonomous drone reached champion-level performance against three human racing champions and recorded the fastest time on its test track, as reported in Nature. The setting, however, was a researcher-controlled flight laboratory.
| Comparison | University of Zurich Swift, 2023 | TU Delft MAVLab, Abu Dhabi, 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | Researcher-controlled flight-lab environment | Organizer-run international championship |
| Human benchmark | Three human racing champions | Three former Drone Champions League world champions in a knockout tournament |
| Track knowledge | Test-track conditions managed by the research team | Competition track and race conditions presented through the A2RL event |
| Reported performance | Fastest time on that test track | 95.8 km/h reported peak speed; 17 seconds for two laps and 22 gates on a 170-metre course |
| Autonomy | Autonomous racing system | Onboard autonomous control using a camera, IMU and Jetson Orin NX, with no human input |
The distinction is not that one experiment was “real” and the other was not. Zurich demonstrated that an autonomous drone could match or exceed champions under controlled laboratory conditions. Abu Dhabi extended that evidence into an organizer-controlled competition in which teams faced standardized hardware and a race format designed for head-to-head performance.
What the result proves—and what it does not
- It proves competitive performance: MAVLab’s system won the AI Grand Challenge and then beat three former world champions in the event’s human-versus-autonomy tournament.
- It demonstrates high-speed onboard autonomy: the machine interpreted camera and inertial data and issued motor commands without a pilot.
- It validates reinforcement learning as a practical control method: training was aimed at reducing failures caused by the gap between simulation and physical flight.
- It does not establish universal superiority: the result applies to this event, hardware, course and rules, not every drone, track or weather condition.
- It does not document independent record certification: the supported records are the organizer’s fastest course time and first AI-only drag-race milestone.
Why this matters beyond racing
Drone racing compresses difficult robotics problems into seconds: perception, state estimation, trajectory planning and motor control must operate together while the vehicle moves close to its limits. A system that can recover from unexpected visual or aerodynamic conditions has potential relevance to other fast autonomous vehicles, including spacecraft guidance research, inspection drones and robotics operating where remote control is unreliable.
The event also shows why competition results are useful complements to laboratory demonstrations. A controlled experiment can isolate an algorithm’s capability; an organizer-run race tests whether the complete system remains effective with standardized equipment, strict rules and an opponent moving through the same competitive environment.
