A firewall or bot-protection rule can interrupt automated WordPress publishing, but intermittent failures alone do not prove the firewall is responsible. Match one failed request to its response and the records at your CDN, security plugin, and hosting server. That evidence separates a blocked request from a REST API authentication problem or a post delayed by WP-Cron.
First, distinguish a failed publish from a late one
“Works, then randomly stops” can describe different problems. An automation might receive an HTTP error while trying to create or update a post, or WordPress might accept scheduled work but run it later than expected. Those cases point to different checks.

- Failed write: The publishing tool reports an error or returns a status such as 401, 403, or 429. Capture the request and trace where it was blocked or rejected.
- Late scheduled post: The post eventually appears, but after its intended time. Check WP-Cron and whether the site received a page load to trigger due tasks.
WordPress explains that “WP-Cron does not run constantly as the system cron does; it is only triggered on page load.” A quiet site can therefore run scheduled tasks late. That timing issue is not, by itself, evidence that a firewall blocked a publishing request. WordPress Developer Resources: WP-Cron

Do not share passwords, application passwords, cookies, authorization headers, or other credentials while asking for help. If you are troubleshooting a browser-based request, Wordfence recommends checking the browser’s Network and Console tabs. A 403 means a request was blocked, but the status alone does not identify which layer blocked it. Wordfence: troubleshooting 403 errors
Check whether a CDN or firewall acted on the request
If the site uses Cloudflare, open Security > Events and inspect the time of the failed request. Where available, filter by hostname, path, source IP, user agent, and action. A matching event can show which security feature or rule acted and whether it blocked, challenged, or rate-limited the request. Cloudflare describes Security Events as a way to investigate requests its security products acted on or flagged. Cloudflare: Security Events

Cloudflare states that Security Events data is retained for up to 31 days across Free, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans. Its Free plan shows sampled logs only; Pro, Business, and Enterprise include all listed dashboard features. A missing event is not proof Cloudflare was uninvolved: sampled logs may omit individual requests.
If an event matches, note the specific rule or feature and the action it took before making a change. Use a narrow exception only after confirming the endpoint, source, and authentication path. Do not disable a firewall wholesale or allowlist an address just because a request failed. Wordfence advises allowing only known legitimate server addresses; block lists may also contain malicious IPs. Wordfence: firewall troubleshooting

Check WordPress, plugin, and host records next
Compare the failed request’s timestamp and path with the security-plugin logs and the host’s access and error logs. A matching record helps establish whether the request reached that layer and what happened there. A 403 can come from the CDN, a security plugin, the host, or WordPress itself; inspect the response content and headers as clues, then confirm against the logs.
- Matching CDN event: Investigate the named rule or security feature and its action.
- No CDN event: Check plugin and host logs anyway; Cloudflare’s sampled logs may be incomplete.
- No server record: The request may have failed before reaching the origin, or the relevant logging view may be incomplete. Compare the publishing tool’s response trace with the CDN record before assigning cause.
When those records do not explain the problem, ask the hosting provider to check access and error logs, outbound loopback connectivity, PHP/runtime errors, and rate or resource limits at the recorded time. The provider may also be able to identify the public outbound IP used when the server connects to itself. This is an escalation step, not evidence that the host is at fault. Test whether WordPress can reach itself
Some automated tasks depend on the server making a request back to its own site. Wordfence documents that certain Cloudflare settings, including Bot Fight Mode, can prevent this loopback connection and affect WP-Cron, scans, and other features. If that pattern fits, use Wordfence’s diagnostics rather than assuming that the external publishing tool is the cause.
Recommended Free Tools
- In the WordPress dashboard, open Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics.
- Check the tests for Connecting back to this site and its IPv6 variant.
- If a test fails, share the result and the failure time with the hosting provider. Ask which public outbound IP the server uses if it differs from the server’s address.
A failed loopback test is a useful clue for cron or other self-request problems; compare it with the failed publishing request before changing a CDN rule. Wordfence: Tools diagnostics

Separate REST API authentication from firewall blocks
WordPress’s REST API lets applications read and write site data, including posts. A request can reach WordPress and still fail because its authentication is missing or invalid, or because the user lacks permission for the requested post type or action. WordPress REST API Handbook
For cookie authentication, WordPress uses a nonce to mitigate cross-site request forgery. A missing required nonce makes the request unauthenticated even if a user is logged in to the dashboard. Confirm which authentication method the integration is meant to use, whether its credentials remain valid, and whether its WordPress user can create or publish the relevant content. Do not treat every 401 or 403 as proof of an edge firewall block. WordPress REST API: Authentication
Read 403 and 429 responses in context
| Status or finding | What it indicates | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| 403 | The request was blocked, but the code does not identify the blocking layer. | Match the response, endpoint, and time to CDN events, plugin logs, and host records. |
| 429 | Cloudflare describes this as too many requests under the server’s rate-limiting rules. Repeated API calls over a short period are one possible trigger. | If Cloudflare returned the response, inspect Rate Limiting Analytics and the request volume. Investigate it separately from an ordinary firewall challenge. |
| No matching Cloudflare event | Not conclusive when the plan’s event view uses sampled logs. | Check security-plugin and host logs, then determine whether the request reached WordPress. |
| No origin record | May indicate a failure before the origin, or incomplete logging. | Compare the publishing tool’s trace with CDN records before concluding where it failed. |
Cloudflare’s published global API limit of 1,200 requests per five-minute period per user applies to calls to the Cloudflare API, not to WordPress REST API publishing. Do not use it as a WordPress publishing limit. Cloudflare: Error 429
Consider endpoint-specific rules and plugin conflicts
Security rules may deliberately protect one endpoint without affecting another. For example, Cloudflare’s Jetpack guidance describes an XML-RPC-specific rule: its default WP0007 rule allows Jetpack’s automation IP range for xmlrpc.php?for=jetpack and can return 403 for other IPs. A separate rule, WP0002, blocks XML-RPC when enabled and is disabled by default. This illustrates why the exact path matters; it does not establish the cause of a REST API publishing failure. Cloudflare: Jetpack and WAF false positives
If CDN, plugin, and host records do not explain the failure, a plugin or theme conflict is another possibility. Wordfence recommends isolating conflicts by re-enabling plugins one at a time and notes that another plugin’s .htaccess rules can accidentally block requests. Use staging where possible; on a live site, work in a maintenance window and change one variable at a time. Wordfence: troubleshooting plugin and firewall conflicts
Quick Recap
Use evidence to choose the next action
- A matching security event shows a block or challenge: Review the named rule and the request’s legitimacy. If an exception is appropriate, scope it to the necessary endpoint and trusted source rather than weakening protection site-wide.
- The response is 401 or WordPress records an authentication failure: Check the integration’s authentication method, credentials, nonce requirements where applicable, and the user’s post permissions.
- The post is late but the write did not fail: Check WP-Cron triggering and loopback diagnostics; a delayed scheduled task differs from a rejected REST request.
- The response is 429: Inspect request volume and rate-limiting records instead of treating it as a 403-style block.
- No record explains the failure: Give the host or integration support the UTC timestamp, path, method, status, response details, and any matching event IDs—without sending secrets.
