There is no single global age at which every AI playground becomes safe. Start with the specific service’s terms and your local law, then match access to the child’s developmental stage. Younger children should use an adult-operated account with the adult conducting the interaction; teenagers need informed consent, privacy protection, fact-checking and boundaries that keep AI from replacing sleep, schoolwork, relationships or independent thinking.
Keep personal information out of prompts, review history, memory and sharing settings, and treat confident-sounding answers as unverified until a trusted source confirms them. The practical standard is simple: an adult knows what the child is doing, the child can explain the result without the tool, and use does not displace offline life.

What parents should decide first
Before a child opens an AI playground, answer four questions: Is the child old enough under that service’s rules and local law? Who will supervise the interaction? What information is allowed in prompts or uploads? What routine prevents use from crowding out sleep, movement, schoolwork and relationships?

Safety controls, retention practices and age rules differ by product and can change. A family should therefore check the current terms, privacy notice and parental-control documentation for the exact app, not rely on a generic age label.

Age limits are service rules, not one universal law
Two widely used services illustrate why parents must check the exact product and country. OpenAI’s Help Center says ChatGPT is not meant for children under 13; users aged 13 to 18 need parental consent. Its terms require users to be at least 13 or the local age of consent, with parent or guardian permission for people under 18. For under-13 classroom use, OpenAI says an adult must conduct the actual interaction. Google’s Gemini mobile-app help says users must be 13 or the applicable age in their country. Google account minimum ages vary by country, and younger children may use parent-managed Family Link accounts.
| Service policy described in current help | Minimum-age rule | Parental consent or management | What this means for younger children |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Not meant for under 13; at least 13 or the local age of consent under the terms | Required for ages 13–18 | In classroom use under 13, an adult conducts the interaction |
| Gemini mobile app | 13 or the applicable age in the child’s country | Country-specific account rules; younger users may use parent-managed Family Link accounts | Use only through an account and setup that the local policy permits |
These requirements are not proof that a service is appropriate for every child who meets the number. A 13-year-old may still need close help with privacy, bias and emotional boundaries, while an older teenager may be ready for more independent project work. UNESCO’s Guidance for generative AI in education and research (2023, updated 2026) recommends protecting data privacy and considering an age limit for independent conversations with generative-AI platforms. UNICEF’s Guidance on AI and children, Version 3.0 (2025) frames child-centred AI around safety, privacy, transparency, wellbeing, inclusion and accountability.
How laws such as COPPA affect a child’s account
In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission explains that the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) covers services directed to children under 13 or services that knowingly collect their personal information. Covered services must provide notice and obtain verifiable parental consent before collecting, using or disclosing that information. COPPA does not create a universal permission for every AI tool, and it does not replace a service’s own age terms or the law where you live. Families outside the United States should check their local rules and the provider’s current notice.

Age verification can be imperfect, so do not treat an account’s date-of-birth screen as supervision. An adult should establish the account, choose privacy settings and know how to review or delete activity. If a school supplies access, ask which edition is being used, who controls the account, how long prompts are retained and how parents can report a problem.
Supervision that fits the child’s developmental stage
Elementary-age children: use AI together
Common Sense Media’s family toolkit recommends that elementary-age children use AI with an adult, focusing on explanations rather than simply obtaining an answer and avoiding independent chatbot use. Sit beside the child, agree on a small learning goal and ask the tool to show steps, examples or questions. Do not allow the child to copy an answer they cannot explain. For image tools, discuss whether a picture reveals a real person, home, school or other identifying detail before uploading it.
Middle school: limited practice and discussion
For middle-school students, the same toolkit recommends limited practice and revision with discussion of mistakes and bias. Let the student draft an answer first, then use AI to generate alternatives, identify gaps or suggest a study question. Review the output together: Which claim is unsupported? Whose perspective is missing? Does the wording sound like the student’s own voice? Keep the student responsible for the final work.

High school: strategic use and clear stop signs
High-school students can use AI more strategically for brainstorming, outlining, coding help or revision, while preserving original voice and knowing when not to use it. Common Sense Media specifically cautions against using AI for companionship, emotional support or mental-health advice. A teenager should know how to decline a prompt that asks for unnecessary personal data, how to verify a consequential claim and how to tell a trusted adult when a conversation becomes upsetting or secretive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA before, during and after routine
- Before: State the learning goal and the permitted kind of help. Decide what information must stay out of the prompt, set a time boundary and identify a trusted source for checking important facts.
- During: Watch whether the tool is explaining or doing the work. Ask the child to challenge an answer, request uncertainty and compare the result with a book, teacher, official document or another trusted source. Stop if the tool requests intimate information, encourages secrecy or shifts into emotional dependence.
- After: Close the session before bedtime or another scheduled activity. Have the child explain the result without looking at the screen, correct errors and record which parts are their own work. If the child cannot explain it, the AI has done too much.
Privacy: what never belongs in a casual prompt
Use the minimum data needed for the task. Do not enter a child’s full name, home address, school name, precise location, phone number, email address, passwords, medical information or another person’s private information. Do not upload an identifiable photo of a child, classmate or family member unless a trusted adult has verified a specific need, the service’s policy and the permissions of everyone shown.
- Replace identifying details with neutral descriptions such as “a 12-year-old student” or “a town in the Midwest.”
- Remove faces, badges, street signs, school logos, metadata and document headers from images before any upload.
- Never paste private messages, disciplinary records, financial details or account-recovery codes.
- For homework help, provide the question and the student’s attempt, not a document containing the child’s name and school identifiers.
UNICEF’s Digital Impact guidance states: “Privacy is a right, not a preference.” That principle is useful when a feature appears convenient. If the task can be completed without a personal detail, leave the detail out.

Check storage, memory, sharing and training controls
Read the service’s current privacy notice and settings page. Find out whether prompts and uploads are stored, used to improve models, shared with third parties, or retained in a memory feature. Turn off optional history or memory when it is not needed, restrict sharing links and choose the most private account mode available.
Deletion is not always immediate or complete. Removing a chat from the visible history may not erase every copy held under a provider’s retention policy, including backups or records kept for security and legal reasons. Check the provider’s current explanation of retention before entering sensitive information, and use an adult-controlled account so a child can ask for help changing settings.

Photos and voice recordings need extra caution
A photo can reveal a face, location, uniform, medical device, household interior or other people who did not agree to upload. Voice clips can identify a speaker and expose private conversations. Ask whether the same task can be completed with a text description or a synthetic example. If an upload is genuinely necessary, crop or redact identifying details, obtain permission from the people shown and delete the file and resulting share link when the task is complete, subject to the provider’s retention policy.

Screen time: use a routine, not a magic number
No cited authority sets one universal AI-specific minute limit. A workable family rule considers age, sleep, schoolwork, physical activity, relationships and the child’s emotional response. Keep AI out of bedtime, use device or platform quiet hours where available and stop when a session displaces sleep, outdoor play, meals, face-to-face time or independent effort.
Set a starting routine such as AI only after required schoolwork, with a visible end time and a short offline activity afterward. Revisit the routine as the child matures rather than removing all boundaries at once. Longer companion-style sessions, repeated reassurance-seeking or distress when access ends warrant closer supervision and an offline conversation with a parent, teacher or counselor.
Common Sense Media cites 70% of teens ages 13–17 reporting that they use AI for schoolwork. High adoption makes habits more important, not less: a student can use AI frequently while still being expected to read source material, practice unaided skills and submit work that reflects their own thinking.

Accuracy, bias and learning integrity
Generative AI can sound certain while being wrong, outdated, biased or fabricated. Teach children to ask, “What is the source, how current is it and what would change the answer?” Important claims about health, safety, law, money, school rules or another person should be checked against a trusted primary source or qualified professional.
- Ask the tool to separate facts from guesses and identify uncertainty.
- Verify names, dates, quotations, calculations and citations independently.
- Compare more than one perspective when a topic involves history, identity, politics or contested evidence.
- Keep a record of the child’s original outline, calculations or draft so AI assistance does not erase authorship.
A general AI playground is not a substitute for emergency services, a doctor, a licensed mental-health professional or a safeguarding specialist. If a child mentions immediate danger, self-harm, abuse or a medical emergency, move offline and contact the appropriate emergency or professional support.
Signs that supervision should increase
- The child hides sessions, deletes history to conceal use or is encouraged by the tool to keep secrets.
- Sleep, homework, exercise, friendships or family time decline after AI access begins.
- The child treats generated claims as certain, cannot explain submitted work or stops attempting problems independently.
- The tool is used for constant companionship, romantic role-play, crisis advice or reassurance instead of human support.
- Prompts include names, locations, health details, passwords, private images or information about classmates.
When one of these signs appears, pause access, preserve any information needed to understand what happened, review account and sharing settings, and discuss the event without shaming the child. Reintroduce access only with a narrower purpose, shorter sessions and an adult check-in.
Quick Recap
A practical family checklist
- Confirm the service’s current minimum age, consent rule and your local requirements.
- Use an adult-operated or parent-managed account for younger children.
- Set the most private history, memory, sharing and data-use options available.
- Agree on prohibited data and a rule for photos, voice and third-party information.
- Use the before/during/after supervision routine.
- Require verification for consequential claims and an explanation in the child’s own words.
- Schedule quiet hours and protect sleep, movement, relationships and offline play.
- Keep AI away from emergency, medical, mental-health and safeguarding decisions.
- Review settings and boundaries whenever the provider changes features or the child enters a new developmental stage.
