If your business needs reliable customer service without making every interaction a phone call, the strongest alternatives are SMS-first queues, SMS virtual agents with human transfer, ticket-based texting, omnichannel AI inboxes, and usage-priced cloud contact centers. Start with one narrow workflow—such as appointment confirmation, order status, or lead response—then add human escalation, consent controls, and cost monitoring before expanding.
What replaces an AI phone call?
An AI phone call is only one way to automate support. Most businesses can serve customers more efficiently by matching the interaction to its intent and urgency:

| Approach | Best fit | Automation | Human involvement | Conversation record |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SMS contact-center queue | Teams that need texting, routing, and live-agent continuity | Workflows and optional virtual agents | Agents receive routed conversations and transfers | Conversation in the contact-center workspace |
| SMS virtual agent | Routine self-service such as status checks or confirmations | High for defined intents | Exceptions and after-hours conversations move to a queue | Conversation history follows the handoff |
| Ticket-based SMS | Businesses already organized around support tickets | Rules, macros, and integrations | Agents reply from the ticket | Each inbound text creates a ticket |
| Omnichannel AI inbox | Small teams handling several business channels | AI agents and workflow automation | Humans take over in the same inbox | Shared inbox thread and channel history |
| Cloud contact center | Organizations needing voice, SMS, AI, queues, and reporting | Configurable self-service and routing | Agents handle escalations in a formal queue | Contact-center records and analytics |
The practical choice depends on channel coverage, the complexity of your workflows, how transfers should work, where phone numbers can be provisioned, and whether you pay per message, minute, user, phone number, or setup.
SMS-first contact-center queues
When a shared queue is the right design
Use an SMS queue when customers may need a person but do not need a live voice conversation. A customer can text a business number, receive an automated acknowledgement, and wait in the same routed queue that human agents use. This avoids asking the customer to repeat information after a bot-to-agent transfer.

Google Cloud Contact Center as a Service
Google Cloud Contact Center as a Service (CCAI) documents support for multiple SMS support numbers, outbound SMS, queues, routing, and agent transfers. Its documentation describes SMS messaging as a way to chat with consumers using text messages. Number provisioning and routing rules should be confirmed for the countries where you operate.
Configure the queue around business hours, agent skills, priority, and maximum wait time. An outbound text should identify the business and the reason for contact; an inbound reply should return to the same queue or ticket rather than opening an unrelated interaction.
SMS virtual agents with human escalation
What the virtual agent should handle
An SMS virtual agent is effective when the customer’s intent can be recognized from a short exchange and completed against a known system of record. Suitable first workflows include appointment confirmation, order-status lookup, lead qualification, address collection, and frequently asked policy questions.

Google Cloud’s SMS virtual-agent documentation says virtual agents can let end users perform self-service without human intervention and describes moving an after-hours conversation into a human-agent queue. Use explicit transfer triggers rather than asking the model to decide everything implicitly:
- The customer asks for a person or expresses dissatisfaction.
- The request involves refunds, cancellations, account access, identity verification, health information, or another sensitive decision.
- The integration cannot retrieve a current answer after a defined number of attempts.
- The customer has waited beyond the promised response time.
- The conversation arrives outside staffed hours and requires follow-up.
Pass the transcript, collected fields, intent, and authentication state to the human queue. Tell the customer when the transfer occurred and give a realistic response-time expectation.
Ticket-based SMS support
How Zendesk Text works
Zendesk Text requires an SMS-capable number that you purchase through the service or port from another provider. Its documentation states that inbound customer texts create a ticket, allowing agents to engage by responding within that ticket.
This model suits teams that already measure first reply, resolution time, backlog, and assignment groups. A ticket gives each text thread an owner and status, while macros and business rules can standardize replies. It is less suitable when customers need a real-time, multi-step bot experience unless you add a separate automation layer.

Number and consent checks
Before launch, verify that the number supports two-way SMS in every target country, that porting will not interrupt existing service, and that opt-out keywords are handled. Keep consent status with the customer record so an agent cannot accidentally send promotional or transactional messages without the required permission.
Omnichannel AI and human inboxes
One workspace for several channels
An omnichannel inbox is useful when customers contact you through SMS alongside channels such as WhatsApp, email, or web messaging. Text.com lists AI agents, workflow automation, business channels, and API calls in its plans. The operational advantage is a single assignment and escalation model instead of separate bot consoles for each channel.
Preventing fragmented conversations
Use a stable customer identifier and display the channel in the agent view. If a customer moves from SMS to another channel, preserve the previous transcript and mark which messages were automated. Routing should prevent two agents—or an agent and an AI workflow—from replying simultaneously.
Cloud contact centers for voice, SMS, and agents
Amazon Connect usage model
Amazon Connect publishes usage pricing of $0.038 per voice minute and $0.014 per SMS or third-party message in 2026. These are usage rates, not a complete monthly budget: phone numbers, optional services, storage, integrations, and taxes can add charges. AWS describes the service as combining agentic AI with human expertise so interactions can be resolved rather than simply routed.

Managed receptionist and messaging services
SignpostAI
SignpostAI lists a Complete plan at $749 per month plus a $199 one-time setup fee in 2026. The plan includes AI minutes, live receptionist minutes, appointment scheduling, and SMS lead messaging. This type of package is aimed at businesses that want a managed combination of answering and texting rather than assembling queues and integrations themselves. Confirm included minute allowances and overage terms before signing.
Dial
Dial advertises voice calls, SMS, WhatsApp, inbound answering, and optional cold transfer to a human. Its advertised phone-number charge is $3 per month per number plus usage in 2026. Clarify whether the human transfer reaches your staff or a managed answering team, and ask how transferred-call minutes and messaging are billed.

- Provision the number. Buy an SMS-capable business number or port an existing one. Confirm two-way support, local registration requirements, sender identification, and coverage for each destination country.
- Choose one narrow intent. Start with appointment confirmation, order status, or lead response. Write the exact data the workflow needs and the system that will supply it.
- Write the automation and fallback. Define permitted answers, authentication checks, timeout behavior, and the words or conditions that trigger transfer.
- Build the human destination. Create a queue or ticket group, assign business hours and skills, and pass the transcript plus collected fields. Provide an after-hours message that states when a person will respond.
- Add consent controls. Record opt-in source and timestamp, honor STOP and equivalent opt-out requests, separate transactional from marketing messages, and restrict sensitive data in text transcripts.
- Instrument the pilot. Measure first-response time, resolution rate, transfer rate, abandoned conversations, opt-outs, message count, and cost per resolved interaction.
- Expand only after review. Examine failed intents and escalations weekly. Add a second workflow only when the first has stable accuracy, clear ownership, and predictable spend.
Designing human handoffs that customers trust
Make the transfer visible
Use a clear message such as “I’m connecting you with a support specialist.” Do not imply that a person is typing when the response is automated. Include the queue’s expected response window and keep the conversation open until the agent closes it.
Give agents usable context
The handoff payload should include the customer identifier, verified contact method, stated intent, order or appointment reference, relevant API results, and the complete transcript. Agents should be able to correct an AI-collected field without restarting the conversation.
Set a recovery route
If an integration is unavailable, stop repeated retries and offer a ticket or callback request. If a customer cannot receive SMS replies, provide an alternate channel already approved for that account.
Consent, privacy, and operating controls
- Consent: Keep separate records for service notifications and marketing. A customer’s request for support is not automatically permission for promotional texts.
- Identity: Require verification before revealing account, payment, health, or location data. Never use a phone number alone as proof for high-risk actions.
- Retention: Set transcript retention and deletion rules that match your legal and contractual obligations.
- Access: Limit transcript and export permissions by role, and log agent overrides of automated decisions.
- Reliability: Monitor delivery failures, carrier filtering, duplicate sends, and delayed webhooks.
- Escalation: Define urgent categories that bypass automation and route directly to a staffed queue.

Customers receive a bot loop
Limit retries, offer a human option after the first failed intent, and transfer the transcript instead of restarting classification.
Agents receive incomplete tickets
Make required fields explicit, validate them before transfer, and expose the original customer wording alongside extracted data.
Costs rise unexpectedly
Separate message, minute, user, number, setup, and integration charges in your forecast. Alert on message volume and transfer spikes, and test long messages that may be split into multiple billable segments.
Messages are blocked or unanswered
Verify number registration and two-way capability in the destination country, identify the sender clearly, honor opt-outs, and monitor carrier delivery reports.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an SMS virtual agent transfer a conversation to a human after hours?
Yes. Google Cloud’s SMS virtual-agent documentation describes moving an after-hours conversation into a human-agent queue. Configure the queue’s staffing hours and tell the customer when a response is expected.
What does Zendesk Text require before customers can text a business?
It requires an SMS-capable number purchased through the service or ported from another provider. Inbound customer texts then create tickets that agents answer from the ticket.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow is Amazon Connect SMS priced?
AWS publishes $0.014 per SMS or third-party message and $0.038 per voice minute for 2026. These usage rates do not represent every possible number, integration, storage, tax, or optional-service charge.
Is a managed receptionist cheaper than building an SMS queue?
There is no universal answer. A managed plan can reduce setup work but may include fixed fees and minute allowances; a cloud queue may charge by usage while requiring your team to configure integrations and staffing.
What should a first SMS automation pilot measure?
Track first-response time, resolution rate, transfer rate, abandoned conversations, opt-outs, message count, and cost per resolved interaction for one workflow before adding more intents.
