Nowcasting estimates what is happening in the economy now, or in the very recent past, before official statistics are released. Traditional economic forecasting usually projects conditions into the future using established economic relationships and assumptions. AI and machine learning can be used for nowcasting or for longer-range forecasting, while conventional econometric models can also produce nowcasts. The real comparison is therefore between different tools and workflows, not two completely separate activities.
The best method depends on the target variable, forecast horizon, country, data available in real time, and evaluation period. A machine-learning model may reduce errors in one application, while a dynamic-factor or bridge model may be more reliable in another. Every nowcast remains a provisional estimate rather than a replacement for revised official national accounts.

What economic nowcasting means
Economic statistics arrive on a schedule that is slower than the economy itself. A national statistics office may publish quarterly gross domestic product (GDP) weeks or months after the quarter ends. Employment, household spending, industrial production and inflation data also arrive in batches, with different release dates and later revisions.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesNowcasting fills that timing gap. It estimates the current quarter, the latest month or another very recent period using information that has already been released. As new observations arrive, the estimate is updated. The output is an early reading of activity, not the final official statistic.

The timing is the defining feature
The word “now” does not mean the model observes the economy directly. It means the model targets the present or near past instead of a distant future horizon. A model estimating GDP growth for a quarter that has just ended is nowcasting if the official GDP number is not yet available. The same model could become a forecasting model when it estimates GDP two or four quarters ahead.
Nowcasting and forecasting overlap
Nowcasting describes the task and timing; artificial intelligence describes a family of methods. Dynamic-factor, bridge and mixed-frequency econometric models have long been used for nowcasting. Random forests, elastic net, support-vector regression, neural networks and ensembles are additional tools that can be applied to the same task. Conversely, machine learning can forecast well beyond the present.
This distinction matters because “AI nowcasting” does not automatically mean a more advanced or more accurate version of traditional forecasting. The comparison must specify the target, horizon, information available at the time, data vintage and out-of-sample period.

AI nowcasting and traditional forecasting compared
| Dimension | AI or machine-learning nowcasting | Traditional forecasting and econometric nowcasting |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Estimate current or near-current conditions before delayed official releases. | Project economic variables over future horizons; the same econometric families can also estimate the current period. |
| Typical methods | Random forests, elastic net, support-vector regression, neural networks and ensembles. | Bridge equations, dynamic-factor models, MIDAS regressions, mixed-frequency vector autoregressions and other pre-specified relationships. |
| Data handling | Can process many predictors and, when suitable, alternative or unstructured signals such as web data, imagery or text. | Usually emphasizes structured macroeconomic, financial and survey series, although modern specifications can also handle many indicators and mixed frequencies. |
| Economic structure | Lets relationships emerge from the data, subject to feature design, regularization and validation choices. | States relationships more explicitly through equations, lags, factors or theoretical restrictions. |
| Potential advantage | Flexibility with large predictor sets and nonlinear relationships; some applications report lower errors. | Transparent structure, established institutional use and well-understood updating when releases arrive. |
| Typical risks | Overfitting, unstable relationships, opaque explanations and poor generalization outside the training period. | Restrictive assumptions, omitted nonlinearities and difficulty adapting when economic relationships change. |
| What a fair comparison requires | Use the same target, horizon, information set, country, data vintage and out-of-sample test as the benchmark. | Use exactly the same evaluation conditions; no model family is a universal winner. |
How a real-time nowcast is produced
A production nowcast is an information-management process as much as a statistical model. The following sequence explains what happens when data are released at different times.
- Define the target and horizon. Specify whether the objective is quarterly GDP growth, monthly inflation, industrial production or another indicator, and identify the period being estimated.
- Build a real-time data set. Record what was actually available on each historical forecast date. This “vintage” discipline prevents a model from seeing revised data that would not have existed in real time.
- Align frequencies and release calendars. Monthly, weekly and daily indicators must be related to a quarterly or monthly target. The model must also cope with the fact that some observations for the current period have been released while others are still missing.
- Handle the ragged edge. The newest part of the data set is incomplete. A model may use a bridge equation, a dynamic factor, a mixed-frequency specification or a separate procedure to fill missing high-frequency indicators. The IMF’s 2025 comparison notes that many models do not solve frequency mismatch internally and that unreleased indicators may themselves need to be forecast.
- Estimate and update. When a purchasing-manager survey, card-spending series or industrial-production release arrives, the model is rerun. The new value can move the estimate even if the underlying economic quarter has not changed.
- Report uncertainty and status. The result should be labeled as an estimate, with its information cutoff and any important missing releases. Later official data can revise the benchmark, and the nowcast can be recalculated as historical inputs are revised.
How traditional economic forecasting works
Traditional forecasting generally starts with a specified relationship between economic variables. A forecaster may model consumption as a function of income and interest rates, inflation as a function of demand and costs, or GDP as a combination of broad activity factors. Lags, seasonal patterns, policy variables and external assumptions are represented explicitly.
Bridge equations
A bridge model summarizes higher-frequency indicators and links them to a lower-frequency target. For example, monthly industrial production and survey data can be aggregated or weighted to estimate quarterly GDP. The equations are relatively easy to inspect, and each incoming release can change the estimate.

Dynamic-factor models
A dynamic-factor model compresses many correlated series into a smaller number of latent factors representing common movements in the economy. The factors can be updated as new releases arrive, making this family useful for large information panels without estimating a separate coefficient for every indicator.
MIDAS and mixed-frequency VAR models
MIDAS models use observations at different frequencies directly, while mixed-frequency vector autoregressions model several variables and their lags together. Both are designed for situations in which a quarterly target must be estimated from monthly, weekly or other higher-frequency information.
Why institutions continue to use them
These models make assumptions visible. Analysts can inspect the variables, lags and transformations, explain why an estimate moved and impose restrictions when economic theory or institutional practice requires them. Their limitations are also visible: a relationship that worked in the past may weaken after a crisis, policy regime change or structural shift.
What machine-learning nowcasting adds
Machine-learning models are often attractive when the predictor set is wide, relationships may be nonlinear or interactions are difficult to specify in advance.
Regularized regression
Elastic-net regression shrinks weak coefficients toward zero and can select among correlated indicators. This helps when hundreds of possible predictors are available but the historical sample is relatively short. The penalty and feature-selection rules must be chosen using a time-respecting validation design.
Tree ensembles
Random forests and related ensembles combine many decision trees. They can capture thresholds and interactions without requiring the analyst to write every nonlinear term. Their results can still be sensitive to missing-data treatment, the variables supplied and the period used for training.

Neural networks and support-vector methods
Neural networks can learn complex transformations, while support-vector regression can fit nonlinear functions through kernel methods. These approaches may be useful when the data set is large and stable enough to support them, but greater flexibility does not remove the need for careful validation or an economic explanation.
Ensembles
An ensemble combines forecasts from several models. The combination can reduce reliance on a single specification, but it does not guarantee improvement. If all component models use stale or biased inputs, averaging them cannot fix the underlying data problem.
Which data can feed a nowcast?
The best input is not necessarily the most exotic one. It must arrive early enough, have a stable relationship with the target and be available consistently across the evaluation period.
| Data category | Examples identified by official sources | What it can signal |
|---|---|---|
| Official high-frequency statistics | Industrial production, imports, electricity generation and tax revenue. | Production, trade, energy use and government-linked activity. |
| Surveys | Purchasing-manager sentiment and other business or consumer surveys. | Changes in orders, confidence and near-term activity. |
| Financial and market series | Exchange rates, stock prices, interest-sensitive lending, credit-card spending and commodity prices. | Financial conditions, household transactions and exposure to external prices. |
| Digital signals | Web-search volume, online-retailer activity and social-media information. | Search interest, consumption patterns and rapidly changing sentiment. |
| Physical and geospatial observations | Nighttime satellite lights and shipping-vessel imagery. | Electricity-linked activity, movement of goods and areas where conventional data are delayed. |
The BIS notes that even apparently timely sources can have lags. Structured hiring and consumer-spending information, for example, may not be available immediately. A model’s “real-time” advantage therefore depends on the release calendar of its inputs, not merely on whether the inputs are digital.
Sub-Saharan Africa examples
An IMF account of real-time indicators in sub-Saharan Africa lists tourist arrivals, crude-oil prices, nighttime lights, shipping imagery, web searches and conventional macroeconomic and financial series. In a Botswana example, candidate predictors included exchange rates, stock prices, inflation, imports, consumer lending, electricity generation, tax revenue, search volume, diamond prices and trading-partner growth.
Those variables illustrate a design process rather than a universal recipe. A tourism-heavy economy may benefit from arrivals data; a commodity exporter may need prices and trading-partner growth; another country may lack a reliable digital signal or have a relationship that changes too quickly to be useful.

Satellite nightlights
An IMF Working Paper published January 30, 2026 tested a random-forest model that added satellite nightlight data to quarterly GDP estimation. Its summary reports improved accuracy over models using only traditional indicators in settings where data gaps constrain macroeconomic analysis. The paper does not provide a single headline percentage on the reviewed summary, and its result should not be generalized to every country or model.

Turkey: a context-specific machine-learning result
IMF Working Paper 2020/045, by Marijn A. Bolhuis and Brett Rayner, reported forecast errors at least 30 percent lower than traditional models in its Turkey application. That is a result for the paper’s framework, data, target and evaluation period. It is not a general promise that an AI model will reduce errors by 30 percent in another country or at another horizon.
Botswana during the pandemic
An IMF article published May 27, 2022 described a nowcast that projected about a 20 percent year-over-year contraction in Botswana’s second-quarter 2020 output. Official GDP published in September 2020 showed a 24 percent year-over-year contraction. These figures describe a pandemic-era case and should not be treated as a general accuracy rate or as evidence that every nowcast will match a later release so closely.
Why one headline number is insufficient
Forecast error depends on the target, horizon, benchmark, information cutoff and loss function. A model can improve average error while missing a turning point, or perform well in a stable period and deteriorate after a structural break. The IMF’s 2025 comparison of traditional econometric models and machine-learning algorithms reports variation across countries, data sets and periods and finds no universally superior model.
Where AI nowcasting can fail
Input data arrive too late
If a supposedly leading indicator is published only after the target period is nearly over, it adds little timeliness. Revisions can also create a difference between the number available on the forecast date and the later, corrected value.

Mixed frequencies create hidden assumptions
A quarterly target and monthly predictors do not line up automatically. Missing observations at the end of the sample must be modeled, carried forward or excluded. Treating an unreleased value as if it were known creates look-ahead bias.
Best Value
Large data sets can overfit
Thousands of potential predictors make it easy to find accidental historical correlations. A model needs rolling or expanding out-of-sample tests, regularization or other controls, and a benchmark that is rebuilt using only information that would have been available at each date.
Relationships change
A pandemic, new regulation, supply shock, monetary-policy regime or change in survey behavior can break a previously useful pattern. Flexible models may adapt quickly, but they can also chase noise. Traditional models may be easier to revise deliberately when the economic mechanism is understood.
Alternative signals may be biased
Web searches, social-media activity and card transactions reflect the people and firms represented in those systems. Coverage can vary by geography, income, age and connectivity. Satellite brightness can be affected by weather, sensor changes, conflict or construction unrelated to GDP. Such signals require validation and documentation before they are treated as national indicators.
Interpretability can be limited
Policymakers often need to explain why an estimate changed. Tree ensembles and neural networks can provide feature-importance diagnostics, but those diagnostics are not the same as a causal explanation. A variable that improves prediction is not necessarily causing the economic outcome.
How to choose between approaches
| Situation | Practical starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Small, well-understood data set and a need for an explainable update | Bridge, dynamic-factor or other mixed-frequency econometric model. | Relationships and revisions are easier to inspect. |
| Many correlated indicators with limited observations | Regularized regression or a factor model, with a simple benchmark. | Shrinkage or dimension reduction limits unstable coefficients. |
| Potential nonlinearities and a sufficiently long, consistent history | Tree ensemble or another machine-learning model tested against econometric baselines. | Can capture interactions that a linear specification may miss. |
| Severe official-data gaps | Combine conventional indicators with carefully validated surveys, digital data or imagery. | Alternative signals may provide coverage before official releases. |
| Policy decision requiring a defensible mechanism | Use an interpretable model or an ensemble that includes one, and document contributions. | Transparency and auditability may matter as much as a small error reduction. |
How to evaluate a nowcast fairly
- Fix the target. Define the exact statistic, transformation and release version being predicted.
- Fix the horizon. State whether the model estimates the current month, the just-ended quarter or a future period.
- Recreate the information set. Use only observations that had been released by each historical forecast date, including the original vintages where possible.
- Represent the ragged edge. Apply the same missing-release and mixed-frequency treatment that would have been available in production.
- Choose credible baselines. Compare with a simple historical average, a bridge model, a dynamic factor or another established benchmark rather than with an artificially weak competitor.
- Run an out-of-sample test. Use rolling or expanding windows and keep the test period separate from model selection.
- Inspect more than average error. Report a suitable loss measure, revisions, performance during turning points and the frequency of large misses.
- Test stability. Check whether the ranking changes across countries, calm and crisis periods, and different release calendars.
- Document uncertainty. Record missing inputs, model changes, data revisions and the date at which each estimate was produced.
How decision-makers should read a nowcast
A nowcast is most useful as an early signal that can guide questions and provisional decisions. A central bank may use it to assess whether activity is weakening before a quarterly release. A finance ministry may use it to monitor revenue or spending conditions. Analysts can use it to decide which sectors or indicators deserve closer investigation.
It should be read alongside the release calendar, alternative models and expert knowledge. A sudden change may reflect one newly released input rather than a broad shift in economic conditions. If official data later revise the historical series, the earlier nowcast should be judged against the information available at the time, not only against the final revised number.
The BIS describes the goal as producing high-frequency assessments and forecasts of measures such as GDP growth or inflation that can be updated whenever new data become available. That wording captures both the value and the limitation: speed and updateability are the product, while accuracy depends on the data and model in a particular application.

The practical difference in one sentence
Traditional economic forecasting usually asks, “What will happen later?” Nowcasting asks, “What is probably happening already, before the official number arrives?” AI can be used for either question, and it is one option among several for answering the first one.
