Supreme Court Justice Vikram Nath warned that children’s exposure to digital technology without adequate safeguards can leave them vulnerable to exploitation and abuse, including misuse of AI to create sexually explicit or abusive material involving children. The remarks, reported from a Hyderabad conference on October 3, 2026, were a keynote warning—not a court ruling or announcement of a new legal rule.

What Justice Vikram Nath warned about

According to Deccan Chronicle’s report, Justice Nath said children’s growing dependence on digital technology, without adequate safeguards, could expose them to online sexual exploitation, grooming, cyberbullying, blackmail and other serious risks.

The AI-specific concern was the generation of sexually explicit or abusive material involving children. The report says Nath cautioned that artificially generated images can still harm a child’s dignity, privacy and reputation. In other words, the concern he raised was not limited to whether an image depicts an authentic event.

What was discussed at the Hyderabad conference

Nath delivered the keynote at the South Zone Regional Conference on “Enhancing Access to Justice for Children in Cyberspace: Preventing Online Sexual Exploitation and Strengthening Child-Friendly Justice and Protection.” Deccan Chronicle reported that attendees included four Supreme Court judges, chief justices of southern High Courts, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, and judges of the Telangana and Andhra Pradesh High Courts.

The conference was described as treating prevention, protection, investigation, legal aid and rehabilitation as connected parts of a response to harm against children online. The report attributes a call for institutions and society to anticipate emerging threats rather than wait for children to become victims to Nath; it does not describe a specific technical or legislative proposal from him.

Other measures raised in the report

Meghwal was reported to have called for stronger digital literacy among children, parents and teachers, as well as accessible, child-friendly legal processes. The report also attributes to him support for trained legal-aid lawyers and trauma-informed, gender-responsive assistance under NALSA’s child-friendly legal services framework, with coordination involving Nyaya Bandhu, Tele-Law and One Stop Centres.

What the report does—and does not—establish

  • It records a warning by a Supreme Court judge at a conference, not a court decision or a new rule of law.
  • It supplies no prevalence figures, named statistics, incident examples or technical explanation of how AI-generated imagery is made.
  • It does not set out a specific investigation, detailed policy proposal or the precise legal treatment of synthetic sexual imagery in India.
  • It does not establish that all synthetic imagery is treated identically under Indian law.

The report’s central point is the potential harm to children and the need for prevention and child-centred support. Any conclusion about a particular image, offence or legal consequence requires facts and legal sources beyond this conference coverage.
