Use the tool that fits the task, but treat every AI-generated legal answer as a lead—not as verified law. Legal-specific AI tools can connect generated responses to legal content and research workflows; general-purpose chatbots can help with approved, lower-risk work such as brainstorming or summarizing text you provide. Neither category removes a lawyer’s duty to verify sources, protect client information, and apply professional judgment.
How legal AI tools differ from general-purpose chatbots
The practical difference is not that one category is reliable and the other is not. Legal-specific research products are designed to work with legal content and workflows. General-purpose chatbots, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot, are broad-audience assistants rather than legal databases. A legal interface may make it easier to find or inspect legal sources, but it does not make a generated answer authoritative, complete, or error-free.

Examples of legal-specific products named in American Bar Association coverage include Lexis+ AI / Lexis+ with Protégé and Westlaw AI-Assisted Research / CoCounsel. These examples illustrate a category, not an endorsement or a guarantee about a particular feature. Product names, packaging, coverage, availability, and data terms can vary by jurisdiction and date. Current pricing and precise feature differences are not established here, so compare the configuration actually offered to your firm rather than relying on a product label.
For either kind of tool, separate three things: the generated explanation, the source material it points to, and your own legal analysis. The explanation is a starting point. The cited authority must be independently checked, and the lawyer remains responsible for any advice or filing that relies on it.

This distinction matters even when an answer includes citations. A citation is useful only if it leads to an inspectable source, the source supports the proposition attributed to it, and the authority applies to the matter at hand. A polished answer can blur those steps by presenting an explanation and its sources as if they were one verified package. Keep them separate in your workflow: use the explanation to frame questions, then test those questions against the authorities themselves.
Choose by task, source needs, and risk
Start by defining what you need the tool to do. A request to outline issues from a document you have already reviewed is different from a request to identify controlling cases in a live matter. The latter depends much more heavily on jurisdiction, coverage, currentness, and traceable authorities.
| Task | Potentially suitable tool category | What the lawyer still has to do |
|---|---|---|
| Brainstorm questions, organize an outline, or improve clarity in non-confidential text | A general-purpose chatbot may be useful if firm policy permits the task and the account is appropriate. | Check factual and legal propositions; do not treat plausible phrasing as research. |
| Summarize text you supply, such as a public opinion or a non-confidential excerpt | Either category may assist, depending on the task, source controls, and approved configuration. | Compare the summary with the original, especially quotations, procedural posture, holdings, and qualifications. |
| Find cases, statutes, or other legal authorities for a particular jurisdiction | A legal-specific research tool is generally the more natural starting point because it is connected to legal content and research workflows. | Open each authority in a trusted source; confirm jurisdiction, current status, and support for the proposition. |
| Draft research-based analysis or a filing | A legal-specific tool may help with source-oriented work; a general chatbot may help with approved drafting tasks. Neither should be the final reviewer. | Validate every material proposition and citation, check the full record and governing law, and make the final judgment yourself. |
| Work involving client-confidential or sensitive information | Only a tool and configuration permitted by the organization’s policy and applicable professional obligations. | Review terms, settings, retention and access controls, and the governing rules before entering information. |
These are task-fit distinctions, not a universal ranking. A legal research product can be a poor fit for a general writing task, while a general chatbot is not a substitute for searching an authoritative legal collection when the answer depends on controlling law.

It can help to define the deliverable before selecting a tool. If the deliverable is an issue list, the lawyer may need breadth and a clear separation between suggestions and legal conclusions. If it is a list of authorities for a brief, the lawyer needs inspectable sources and must verify that each one supports the argument. If it is a summary, the supplied text—not the model’s confident paraphrase—is the reference point. The more the task turns on controlling law or a material factual assertion, the less appropriate it is to rely on generated prose without direct source review.
Compare the factors that affect legal work
Before adopting a tool, assess the whole workflow rather than judging a polished answer. A useful comparison should cover the following:
- Source database and jurisdiction: Identify what legal materials the product can search for your jurisdiction and matter. Do not assume that a product’s legal focus means it covers every court, source type, or jurisdiction you need.
- Inspectable citations: Can you open the cited opinion, statute, regulation, or other authority and inspect the relevant text? A citation that is difficult to trace or verify creates more work, not less.
- Currentness and treatment: Determine what the service tells you about updates and authority status, if anything. Do not infer that an answer is current merely because it was generated today.
- Task fit: Compare how well the tool supports the actual job—issue spotting, case discovery, summarizing supplied material, drafting, or another defined use.
- Confidentiality and controls: Review the specific account’s terms and settings, along with your firm’s policies and professional obligations. Public availability alone does not establish that a particular configuration is suitable for client information.
- Review burden: Account for the time needed to locate and validate authorities, check quotations, and correct errors. A fast first draft can still be costly if verification is difficult.
- Cost and availability: Confirm current pricing, access, and included features directly for the relevant region and account. The sources available here do not establish comparable prices or feature packages.
For a comparison, ask whether the answer makes its evidentiary path visible: can a reviewer move from a proposition to the cited passage, and from there to the full authority? Check whether the tool identifies the jurisdiction and source type clearly enough to spot a mismatch. These are workflow questions, not assumptions about any named vendor. Product features and packaging change, so a firm should assess the specific service and account it would use rather than generalize from a product name.

Cost should be assessed in the same practical way. A subscription price alone does not tell you whether a tool is economical for a particular practice. Include the time spent prompting, locating sources, checking current status, correcting output, and training users. Do not assume that a cheaper or more expensive category will be better value. Current prices and comparable packages are not established here, so obtain current vendor information and assess it against the firm’s intended tasks and review burden.
In a firm evaluation, record the intended task, jurisdiction, approved data types, output format, source traceability, and the human review required. That makes a pilot more informative than an open-ended test in which users try different prompts and compare which answer sounds most persuasive.
Why legal-specific does not mean error-free
Empirical results are a reason to verify rather than to assume that legal branding solves hallucinations. Magesh and coauthors’ 2025 study, “Hallucination-Free? Assessing the Reliability of Leading AI Legal Research Tools,” compared leading legal research tools and general-purpose GPT-4. It reported incorrect information in a range of 17% to 33% across the tested LexisNexis and Thomson Reuters tools. That range describes the systems evaluated in that study; it is not a measured error rate for every later version, every prompt, every task, or every legal AI product.
The finding does not establish that general-purpose chatbots are safer, nor does it support a universal product winner. It does show why a convincing tone, a legal-specific interface, or a citation list cannot replace source checking. Treat the answer as a research lead even when it comes from a tool connected to legal content.
Verification means more than confirming that a case name exists. Read the authority itself and check whether it says what the generated answer claims. Confirm that it applies to the relevant jurisdiction and procedural setting, and check whether it remains good law when that matters. If the output quotes language, compare the quote with the original text. If it relies on several authorities, test each material proposition against the authority said to support it.
The study is evidence about the systems and evaluation it tested, not a guarantee about later product versions or every possible legal task. A result from an evaluated set of prompts should not be converted into a forecast that a tool will make errors at exactly the same rate in your practice. Nor does a low apparent error rate in a small internal pilot prove that untested tasks are safe. Use empirical findings as a reason to design meaningful checks, not as a replacement for them.

A safe workflow for using AI in legal research
- Define the task and jurisdiction. State whether you need brainstorming, a summary of supplied material, authority discovery, or drafting support. Identify the court, governing jurisdiction, date range, and legal issue as relevant. This helps you decide whether a general assistant is appropriate or whether a legal research workflow is needed.
- Check approval before entering information. Use an organization-approved tool. Do not enter client-confidential or sensitive material unless the firm’s policy and the specific service configuration permit it. Check the current terms and settings rather than assuming that a paid, enterprise, or familiar account has suitable protections.
- Ask for a bounded, inspectable result. Request the relevant authorities and the propositions each authority is said to support. Treat those citations as leads to investigate, not as proof. A prompt cannot make an answer reliable simply by telling the system not to make mistakes.
- Open every cited authority in a trusted legal source. Confirm that the authority exists, is from the relevant jurisdiction, and supports the stated proposition in context. Check current status where required and examine any limiting language that could change how it applies.
- Verify quotations and material facts. Compare quoted text with the source. Check factual assertions against the record or other reliable material available to you. Do not let a generated summary replace reading passages that are central to the analysis.
- Apply independent professional judgment. Decide whether the verified authorities and facts support the conclusion. Review the final advice or filing yourself, and comply with the professional rules and firm procedures that apply to the matter.
For authority work, add a proposition-level check: write down the legal point the answer makes, then identify the exact source passage that supports it. A case may be real but distinguishable, limited to a different procedural posture, or cited for a proposition it does not establish. A source can also contain language that looks helpful in isolation but is qualified elsewhere in the opinion. Reading the relevant context reduces the risk of relying on a shorthand summary that misses the qualification.
When a citation cannot be located, appears mismatched, or does not support the stated point, do not rely on it. Continue the research through a trusted source and assess the remaining analysis independently. A generated answer that lacks traceable support may be useful as a question prompt, but it is not a substitute for authority.
Protect confidentiality with account-level review
Do not treat “public chatbot” and “confidentiality risk” as interchangeable labels, or assume that a paid version is automatically acceptable. The relevant question is whether the exact service, account, settings, and data handling meet the firm’s policy and applicable professional obligations for the information involved.

Do not paste identifying details into a service merely because the prompt is framed as research or drafting.
ABA Formal Opinion 512, issued July 29, 2024, is professional ethics guidance addressing generative AI. The ABA’s coverage emphasizes that AI is a tool, not a substitute for legal expertise and judgment. Lawyers also need to check the rules and ethics opinions applicable in their own jurisdiction. The Law Society of England and Wales provides guidance for its jurisdiction; its framing should not be silently treated as a rule for US practice.
Jurisdiction matters both for the legal answer and for professional guidance. The empirical study discussed above concerns tested products and should not be mistaken for a rule governing lawyer conduct. ABA Formal Opinion 512 is ethics guidance, while the Law Society’s guidance is directed to England and Wales. A firm or lawyer must identify the professional obligations that actually apply, rather than treating a general discussion of AI as a universal rule.

What adoption figures do—and do not—tell you
The State Bar of Texas reported in 2026 that, among attorneys who reported using AI, 63% used ChatGPT; Westlaw/CoCounsel was the most-used legal-specific AI tool at 30%; and legal research was the most common AI use at 53%. These are Texas survey figures with AI-using attorneys as the denominator, not percentages of all attorneys or a measure of accuracy, effectiveness, or endorsement.
The figures are useful context for why lawyers are asking how to use both categories. They do not show which product is best for a particular matter, whether any respondent entered confidential information, or whether an AI-generated research answer was correct. Adoption should not be confused with validation.
Make a firm pilot answer a real decision
A disciplined pilot should measure whether a tool helps with a defined workflow while preserving the review standard. Choose representative tasks and jurisdictions, use only material permitted for the test, and make reviewers verify outputs against trusted sources. Assess not only whether the answer is useful, but also how much work it takes to validate and correct it.
- Can reviewers open and inspect each cited authority without ambiguity?
- Does the output distinguish sources from generated explanation clearly enough for the workflow?
- How often do reviewers find unsupported, incomplete, or inaccurate material propositions in the tested tasks?
- Does the tool fit the jurisdiction and source types the team actually handles?
- Can the firm supervise use, protect information, and define who approves final work?
- Does time saved on an initial draft exceed the time spent checking and correcting it?
Keep results scoped to the tested version, configuration, prompts, jurisdiction, and tasks. A successful pilot in one kind of matter does not establish that the same tool is appropriate for another, and an evaluation should be repeated if the product or its terms materially change.
To make the test useful, reviewers should use comparable tasks and a shared review standard. Record whether sources can be found, whether the cited text supports the stated point, whether jurisdiction and currentness are addressed, and what corrections were needed. This is more informative than asking users which answer they preferred. A tool that produces a fluent response may still impose a substantial checking burden; a less polished output may be more useful if its source trail is clear and easy to inspect.
Recommended Free Tools
Set limits on what the pilot can establish. A limited evaluation cannot demonstrate that a tool is accurate for every practice area, every jurisdiction, or every user’s prompts. It can help a firm decide whether a defined workflow is worth further use under specified controls. Revisit the decision if the product configuration, source coverage, account terms, or firm policy changes.
Best Value
Practical choice: use a hybrid, supervised approach
For authority discovery and jurisdiction-dependent legal research, begin with a legal-specific research workflow when it provides the sources and traceability your task requires. Use a general-purpose chatbot only for tasks that fit its broader role and are permitted by firm policy, such as organizing non-confidential material or generating a first-pass outline. In both cases, verify legal claims against primary or otherwise trusted authority before relying on them.
There is no evidence here for a universal product ranking, a guarantee of error-free answers, or a single confidentiality setting suitable for all firms. The sound decision is the tool-and-process combination that fits the matter, exposes sources for review, protects permitted information, and leaves final legal judgment with the lawyer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are legal-specific AI research tools more accurate than general-purpose chatbots?
The available findings do not establish a universal winner. Magesh and coauthors’ 2025 study reported incorrect information in a range of 17% to 33% across the tested LexisNexis and Thomson Reuters tools, in an evaluation that also compared general-purpose GPT-4. Those results apply to the systems tested, not every later version or every task. Verify each material claim and citation regardless of tool category.

Can lawyers put confidential client information into ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, or a legal AI product?
Do not decide based on the product name or whether an account is paid. Review the exact service configuration, current terms and settings, data handling, firm policy, and applicable professional obligations. Enter client-confidential or sensitive information only when the organization’s policy and the specific configuration permit it.
How should a lawyer verify an AI-generated legal citation?
Open the cited authority in a trusted legal source. Confirm that it exists, is relevant to the jurisdiction and procedural setting, supports the proposition in context, and remains good law where that matters. Check quotations against the original and review limiting language. A citation list is a set of leads, not proof that the analysis is correct.
What do the State Bar of Texas AI-use figures mean?
In 2026, the State Bar of Texas reported that among attorneys who said they used AI, 63% used ChatGPT, 30% identified Westlaw/CoCounsel as the most-used legal-specific AI tool, and 53% identified legal research as the most common AI use. These are Texas figures for AI-using attorneys, not all attorneys, and they do not measure accuracy or endorsement.
Does ABA Formal Opinion 512 apply to every lawyer?
ABA Formal Opinion 512, issued July 29, 2024, is professional ethics guidance addressing generative AI. Lawyers should also check the rules and ethics opinions applicable in their own jurisdiction. The Law Society of England and Wales offers guidance for that jurisdiction, not a universal rule for US practice.
