What the free-repair program is
The arrangement turns an ordinary service call into a data-collection opportunity. A homeowner requests help with a qualifying plumbing, electrical, HVAC, duct-cleaning or carpet-cleaning job. If the request fits the program’s location, scope and consent rules, a licensed local company performs the work normally while a technician wears a small chest-mounted camera.

The recording is intended to show more than a successful final result. It captures first-person demonstrations of diagnosis, tool selection, testing and problem-solving, including the order in which actions happen. The city list describes current availability, not nationwide coverage. A participating company may also have its own travel radius, scheduling limits or licensing requirements, so a request inside a listed metropolitan area is not an automatic acceptance.
How a job becomes robot-training data
- Submit the request. The homeowner describes the city, trade, home type and problem.
- Human eligibility review. A person checks whether the job fits the live market, trade, approximate size and recording-consent requirements. Eeko says it aims to respond within one business day.
- Scope and scheduling. A participating licensed company contacts the homeowner to agree on the work and appointment time.
- Normal repair with recording. The technician completes the service while wearing a small camera mounted on the chest. The goal is to preserve the sequence of inspection, diagnosis, tool use, testing and repair rather than only the finished condition.
- Sign-off and payment. The homeowner signs off on the completed work. The company bills eeko instead of charging the homeowner for the qualifying service.
- De-identification and distribution. Faces and other identifying material are blurred or cut, and the recording is licensed or organized as data for approved AI and robotics organizations.
What work qualifies
The strongest matches are routine service calls involving a real fault that requires diagnosis and repair. Examples given in the program description include a dripping valve, a dead circuit, a short-cycling furnace and a duct-cleaning job. Ordinary calls or work taking roughly one day can qualify when the request is in a live market and the homeowner agrees to recording.

The exclusions matter: this is not a promise to fund every project, replace an emergency response service or cover a large renovation. The final decision is made during the human review and contractor-scope discussion.
Is the repair really free?
For an accepted, qualifying job, the homeowner is not charged for the covered service described by the agreed scope; eeko pays the participating company. “Free” therefore depends on eligibility, location, contractor availability and the scope that the company and program approve. The available description does not establish that every extra repair, replacement part, follow-up visit or unrelated issue is included, so homeowners should confirm those boundaries before work starts.

Before accepting an appointment, ask the reviewing person or contractor exactly when recording starts, how a pause request is made, whether any portion of the call will be excluded and what work is outside the approved scope. The description identifies approved AI and robotics recipients in general terms, but it does not name individual organizations or publish a complete retention schedule.

Why robotics developers want repair footage
Household maintenance combines perception, dexterity and judgment. A technician must locate a fault that may not be visible, choose compatible tools, test a hypothesis, adapt when the first approach fails and leave the system working safely. First-person, step-by-step examples expose those decisions in context. A video showing only a broken valve before and a repaired valve afterward would not show the intermediate actions a robot would need to learn.

That makes routine service calls potentially useful training material for manipulation and task-planning systems. It does not, however, prove that a particular robot can perform plumbing or HVAC work. No measured improvement in robot performance, independent benchmark, dataset size or deployment result has been published with the program description.
How to decide whether to apply
- Check that your home is in Minneapolis, Chicago or Miami, rather than an upcoming market.
- Choose one of the five listed trades and describe the fault precisely.
- Expect a human review and a reply target of one business day, not an instant booking.
- Confirm the job is routine and approximately one day’s work or less.
- Read the recording and privacy terms, including the camera-pause option, before consenting.
- Ask what parts, additional work or return visits would fall outside the approved free scope.
